“Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The location is spectacular and the grounds are beautiful and well taken care of. However we felt like the food was mediocre for the prices we were charged - $15 for a sandwich and $10 for a Pina Colada ought to be better than they were. Also, we did not have one of the new upgraded rooms, which might have been nicer, but ours was dirty. The bathroom was dirty, under the couch there were crumbs of food, and we found stains and hair on the bed (not ours). ” May 9, 2007 by

“We truly loved our vacation and our stay at el conquistador and look forward to returning at some point in the future. “It is a beautiful resort that is fully self-contained. The upside is you have to do nothing and everything is taken care of. The downside is that everything is overpriced and one does not experience Puerto Rico. It could just as easily be in Disney World.” Mar 21, 2007 by

“The hotel was magnificent. It has one of the best views and scenery. It has its own private island for the beach, activities, etc. It's a good place for any occasion (family, romantic, friends, etc) they have great service and everyone is really friendly. Random employees of the resort would greet you from afar when I was on my balcony! The only thing I disliked was the price on food. A chicken Cesar salad was $17 and a hamburger and fries were $14. Each brunch/lunch will run you about $20-$25 per person, and dinner at one of the fancy restaurants is about $60-$120 per person.” Mar 19, 2007 by

“The overall experience for a resort was good. The ocean view was beautiful and the island beach was great. The food service was average and felt like the food was from sysco foods and the service was slow. I was disappointed that the elevators were continually failing. They didn't supply free coffee in the room but there was a coffee maker. Internet service was not free. “Over all it was nice. Could have been better. Our room was not renovated yet and needed it. The air conditioner leaked badly. The carpet was soaked. We had to defrost our own mini fridge b/c of lazy staff. I would go back but stay in a different room. The food and beverages are way over priced. Go to Wal-mart. Parking is also a pain. Oh, something they don¿t tell you before you go - you can not have any coolers on the premises. We still used one, just hide it. Also, you can't take any food or drinks not bought at the hotel to the pool or island. They want to charge you an arm and a leg. $12.00 a pine colada beer is not much cheaper. “The room (their most basic) was large with some minor issues with the tile work. The views from the main areas (including the pool) were excellent. The private island had one of the nicest beaches in Puerto Rico outside of Venues, although getting there was a bit of a fiddle (which also made it a bit more private). “The resort is lovely and first class, when I arrived at check-in at noon time they did a pre-registration for me. They said there system was down (which I think was a lie). However, they told me to come back at 3:00pm which I did because that was there official check in time. They said the rooms were not ready. They said come back at 4:00, which I did. They said come back at 5:00 which I did. Finally at 5:30pm I was able to check in. It was funny that the housekeeper knocked on my door at 9:30 am during check-out day asking what time was I checking out. I wish they were that concerned about checking in the guests than they are checking them out. Everything else was excellent. They have a lousy, I mean lousy front desk. “There is a stark contrast between the rooms in the hotel, and the public areas and location. If you are not inside the room, you are in a piece of heaven. The rooms, however, are just horrible. Outdated, with nothing working, and extremely filthy. Simply shocking room conditions. There were too many broken lamps, phones, TV, etc. to list. Worse than the lowest level motel - but the lobby and public areas, pools, and location of hotel on the cliff are fantastic.” Feb 9, 2007 by

“We had a great family vacation at the el conquistador. The beach, pools, grounds etc. Are beautiful. The restaurants are good, but we thought the hotel needed an additional dinner option with a view. The best restaurants there are interior to the hotel and do not offer you the spectacular view from the hotel. The staff was helpful. “We only stayed one night at this hotel and arrived late due to flight difficulties. The food was typical resort-expensive, as were fees to park. The rooms we stayed in were old, but were large and worked well for a family stay. There were plenty of shops and palomino island was very nice. Plan to stay at least 2-3 days if you choose this resort. The staff was very helpful, but there was a clear expectation of tipping for services.” Nov 12, 2006 by

“We traveled with a group of 7 persons to celebrate a 50th birthday. Had adjoining rooms on the waterfront. The hotel was fabulous and loved Palomino Island for snorkeling and water sports. The pools were outstanding, open 24 hours and Aqua Fitness was fun. The hotel restaurants were great, especially Stingray Cafe for seafood. There were also several local restaurants close by to sample the local food. Our room was in the marina which meant taking a funicular to our room. Took more time but was fun. On one day both funiculars broke down and we had to take a van shuttle but were repaired quickly. The rooms could have used a little repair. Door knob handles were loose, faucets leaked and curtains falling off the track but minor details. Had problem with toilet not flushing one day but the engineer came quickly and repaired it quickly. You need a rental car as the hotel is an hour from the San Juan airport. The tour to Mosquito Bay was well worth it. I would highly recommend this hotel and plan to return some day. “Everything went perfect but the first day I asked if I can bring guest to the private island. The person in the Front Desk told to make arrangements with the Concierge. I went to that desk talk to them and they said the only thing I had to do is when they come to go to the Front desk and add the names that at least one was going to be part of my group and the other one maybe I had to pay. So I invited my brother when I go to give the names of my brother and my sister in law, the woman at the Front Desk told me that was impossible because of insurance reasons only guest can go to the Island. I told her that it was embarrassing that my family drove to far to come to the hotel and I cant take them to the Island . She was very negative but she went inside and talk to manager that never came out (seems very unprofessional) then she came out and said that the manager was going to let them go but she was charging me 40.00 per person, which at this point I agree to stop the embarrassment.” Aug 30, 2006 by

“A truly gorgeous hotel with spectacular views of the sea. Rooms are perched high on the cliff. Although somewhat inaccessible without a car, there is a 35 dollar shuttle from the airport. “While the room is very spacious and upscale, there were some issues, there were sands on the bed sheet and the bathtub drain was clogged. We called the front desk about the problems and the response was reasonably quick. An engineer came and fixed the bathtub and housekeeping gave us extra (clean) sheets for the bed. Despite some problems with the room, the private island owned by the resort alone more than makes up for the shortcomings. It was simply beautiful and breathtaking! “El Conquistador is a first class resort hotel, with the public area amenities to match. The site is spectacular, with beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea and nearby islands. However, the property shows its age, particularly in the rooms, which are tired and dated. Our room lacked a mini bar, while some features didn't work (TV remote, ceiling fan), and others were just old and tired (stained carpet, mildewed ceiling tiles). We found getting around the huge property challenging, particularly as all amenities were not available on all levels, getting a coke required a couple elevator rides, or a ride up or down the funicular. Getting to the beach, which is on a private island crowded with hundreds of other guests, took a ferry ride. Found the casual dining mediocre and expensive for what you got. However, the fine dining was excellent and priced similarly to equivalent establishments in large urban areas on the mainland. We came to play tennis, and that we did, on well-maintained and beautifully, sited courts.” Feb 8, 2006 by

“This hotel is beautiful. The lobby and pool area is gorgeous. The golf course surrounding the property is beautiful. The service was very friendly. We were given a beautiful room overlooking the ocean in a quite part of the hotel. The room itself was okay - nothing special. Large vanity area and tiny bathroom/shower/tub. Nothing luxurious- just average. But we had a great balcony and view. The property is huge, and there are a ton of dining options. The "main" breakfast dining (buffet and a la carte) is expensive, but they also had a cheaper cafe which we appreciated. The big downside was that there is No beach at the hotel. You must take a funicular down a big hill to the marina and then a ferry to the beach. What a bummer! Also, to get to the hotel you need to drive through Fajardo, which is a pretty dumpy looking town. Once you enter the resort is a contained paradise! “The feeling with what my husband and I left the hotel is that is too expensive, it's like you are getting nothing from the hotel back. No welcome cocktail, no welcoming employees, too expensive restaurants, and you don't get anything complimentary. “If you are rich you might want to stay here. If not, be prepared to go in debt. The place is very remote and it is like a town unto itself. You can get whatever you want there but it is very expensive. They want you to be a captive vacationer so you'll spend your money there. They don't really want you to have a car to be able to get away to cheaper meals/snacks/etc. They charge $15 a day to park your car. $22 for a buffet breakfast. $11 for breakfast for kids. “I would not have wanted to pay full price - nice view and some good attributes - but the staff needs a lot of training in how to deal with customers. Moving around the hotel is difficult because of its multiple levels, restricted modes of movement (some areas can only be reached by elevator or the vernicular - and these things were not always fully functional - resulting in a backup and lots of standing around.” Hotel Representatives:
