“Perhaps as I entered the hotel the customer light went off, but I was treated at best indifferently, at worst rudely and with disdain. I was not made to feel like a guest. I stay in hotels about 50 or more nights a year, all over the world; the De La Ville Intercontinental Rome is not a 5 star hotel, more like a 2 star at best. The Hampton Inn in Ukiah California does a way better job of customer service than this alleged 5 star hotel did. They even did my turn down service when housekeeping made my room in the morning so they did not have to return. My bed was turned down all day, not what you would expect at a world class hotel. I accepted the fact that they gave me one of their less desirable rooms, on the noisy street side, a little threadbare. The first night, I dined in my room with my son. Salad, Salmon and Spinach, Pizza and Pasta Pomodoro. The Pizza tasted like frozen dough with uninspired toppings, the Pasta reminded me of canned, the tomatoes in the salad were clearly unripe and tasteless. The server also told me that service was not included and wanted a tip, service was included. No drinks or wine. I knew Rome was expensive and I do not mind paying but overall it was one of the worst hotel meals I ever had, and that includes those in New Jersey. I will never eat in this hotel again. So if you do not mind poor service, terrible food and being treated like a pain, this is the place to stay.” Nov 20, 2009 by
David from Louisville,KY
“This hotel was very nice. Exactly what you would expect from a 4-5 star hotel.” Nov 19, 2009 by
Brendan from Sherborn,MA
“Great location. Friendly staff. Smallish room and bathroom, but nicely appointed in an old-world kind of way. The heat in the room, which could not be adjusted, spoiled the entire stay. Although it was in the 60's outside, it must have been in the 80's in the room making it difficult to sleep. An open window helped, but the 24-hour noise made leaving the window open impossible. Room did not have a view.” Sep 28, 2009 by
Kyle from Toronto,Canada
“Location was great, very close to subway and walking distance to central major attractions. Nice enough hotel and rooms were small but standard European fare.” Sep 20, 2009 by
Gordon from Port Deposit,MD
“Arrived early and was able to get into room. When asking front desk information personnel were not at all helpful.” Aug 17, 2009 by
Olivia from Miramar,FL
“This hotel is perfect for its location and it's kept very clean. The staff, in general especially the concierge, was very friendly and helpful, although the management was not as helpful and/or flexible in a situation concerning the breakfast. The room had a mini-bar supplied with sorted beverages for your use and a space for your personal use. There is a service charge for this space which is not mentioned at the time of check in. This charge was challenged and it was withdrawn.” Aug 5, 2009 by
Linda from Spring,TX
“The hotel was very nicely decorated and was in a great location. The staff was not very friendly with the exception of one or two.” May 21, 2009 by
Jennifer from Charleston,WV
“Overall great hotel. The first time we stayed was fantastic. Great service, great room, great location. If you are looking for a great hotel in Rome, this is it. Look for Antonio in the bar on the second floor. He gave us advice on a great place to eat, and you will never have better bar service. Concierge was amazing and went as far as calling the airline to discuss my moms wet luggage. He also called a car service and argued a better fare for us. Our second stay was not as good.” May 14, 2009 by
Katie from Akron,OH
“We paid for an upgrade, and it was well worth it since we already got a great deal on the room. We had a king size bed (very uncommon in Europe), and a garden terrace. It was a beautiful room with a good-sized bathroom. Highly recommended!” Apr 28, 2009 by
Doris from Hampton,SC
“The hotel is in a great location, not too congested. Everyone at the hotel was very courteous and helpful, especially the concierges. Bed was comfortable, room was clean but very small. The bathroom was nice. Don't know why they will not tell you about the subway and the elevator, which is right there and easy to figure out. Nice restaurant, but very expensive.” Apr 17, 2009 by
David from Washington
“We had a wonderful stay. The staff and hotel were delightful. Highly recommend the hotel.” Apr 16, 2009 by
Joanne from Bethesda,MD
“My family enjoyed our brief stay. The staff was exceptional. The rooms were extremely clean, and attractive.” Apr 8, 2009 by
Fred from Riverview,Canada
“There are some great five-star hotels in Rome and this place is definitely not one of those. At best this is a 2.5 star tourist - class hotel. The rooms are worn (bathtub with a big chip out of it) lobby is tattered, the staff unfriendly and the rooms small and smelly. I have photos. Don't stay there. Do yourself a favor and check in at the Y. Sure to be a better experience.” Dec 29, 2008 by
Scott from Monclova,OH
“Excellent hotel and staff. Very courteous and helpful at every turn. Hotel room very nice, but would have liked a bit more closet space. Complimentary gifts made this stay very special and one of the best trips we've had in a long time due to the attentiveness of the hotel staff and concierges.” Sep 12, 2008 by
Kyle from Toronto, ON CA
“The hotel is centrally located on top of the Spanish Steps. It is very close to a subway and within walking distance of the Coliseum, Pantheon, Fountain of Trevi etc. Rooms are small but very nice.” Sep 9, 2008 by
Michelle from Las Vegas, NV
“The only good thing about this hotel was the decent location. I was very disappointed in the hotel.” Sep 4, 2008 by
Pat from Lexington, KY
“Excellent staff. We took a 5 day trip to Florence, and forget to take our American cash from the safe. We called and they told us they had it and were holding it for us until our return.” Sep 3, 2008 by
Donna from Lexington, KY
“The hotel sits at the top of the Spanish Steps, in one of the most beautiful areas of Rome. The rooms were big, baths very elegant. Everything about it was first class. It was like we were dreaming.” Sep 2, 2008 by
Josh from Toronto, ON CA
“I care not to complain about this hotel except to say it was the most expensive and the worst on our whole 3 week trip.” Aug 27, 2008 by
Richard from Candiac, QC CA
“Not please with the room cleanliness and friendliness of the staff. I found that the staff was very standoffish and did not proactively seek to make you feel welcome. When we asked advice of the concierge about what to do, places and shows to see, they were not very helpful. In addition I also rented a Hertz car for one day. Luckily the taxi driver knew of the drop-off location and got us there. The following day I returned the rental late as I could not find any open gas stations in Rome - and this using a GPS! I had to leave Rome and return to the highway to find an open gas station. I then returned my wife to the hotel because she was fed up and returned the rental shortly there after. After returning the car, I was told by the car rental attendant that "it's not my problem" that all of Rome is on vacation and proceeded to charge me for a full extra day. I tried to reason with him but he did not lift a finger to be helpful let alone pleasant. He explained that I could keep the car another day but I told him that I had a flight the next day and did not want to run into any further complications than I already have just prior to leaving. When I asked him I could speak to his manager or their head office he told me that neither was available due to vacations.” Aug 18, 2008 by
Sharyn from Miami, FL
“Hotel is in a great location, at the top of the Spanish steps. We had the smallest room on the 6th floor. View of courtyard was fine. Bathroom was pretty and decent size. Employees were all nice and very helpful. Lobby was small and not exceptional.” Aug 5, 2008 by
Bobby A. from Roanoke, TX
“I was disappointed with the size of the room and the walls were scared and in need of repair in some areas of our room - however it did have a terrace that was nice and bed & bedding was real comfortable. The best part of room was the bed. The bath rooms were small but in good shape and very clean. The breakfast area and patio was real nice and continental breakfast was nicer than expected but in other hotels complete breakfast was included. The location was great and should be considered a big plus - 50 yards from top of Spanish steps and walking distance to several major attractions. Tour bus can be taken at end of the street about 2 blocks walk. Another nice thing was 6th floor patio that overlooks the city and several attractions can be seen from there. Please get walls repaired in rooms and include complete breakfast - other than that this would be a good place to stay but I would rank it about a 4 star quality.” Jul 25, 2008 by
Ron from Salem, OR
“Overall, a very nice hotel, but our room was in bad need of paint, so even though it was very clean, the impression when you looked at the walls was shabby. The bed was pathetic. As with most king beds in Europe, they are two long twins pushed together. However, the edges on these were very hard, so you needed to avoid the center. One side was extremely hard and rather lumpy. The other side was better, but still, in order to sleep on it, we had to strip the sheets off, put the comforter on the mattress, then remake the bed on top of that in order to get any sleep.” Jul 23, 2008 by
Rob from Maple, ON CA
“A good hotel that met with our expectations. It was in an excellent location in central Rome close to the nearby Subway. Bathroom was first rate and bed was clean and comfortable with good comforter. Downside was paying extra Euros for room upgrade (in size) and to accommodate a bed being placed in the room for children (we were 4 people). Excessive charges for phone were annoying. The initial smell in the room was strong and from daily use of spray which was not used to rest of the stay.” Jul 3, 2008 by
Lisa from Jacksonville, FL
“Excellent hotel with excellent service and excellent location.” Jun 15, 2008 by
Zeina from Miami, FL
“Very good experience. The location was very convenient, the staff very professional and welcoming. The general atmosphere was warm. We definitely recommend this hotel.” Jun 5, 2008 by
Cheryl from Port Charlotte, FL
“Staff failed to notify us that we could access the hotel via a nearby Metro station with an elevator, which caused us to hike up the Spanish Steps every time we went to and from the hotel. They have a button on their phone that says "For anything at any time" but when we called and asked them to replace some bags that housekeeping took (without our permission) they said it was late and that they would have to find staff available to bring them to us. That took over 1 hour- so "any thing at any time" is not necessarily true. But overall, it was an acceptable experience.” Jun 5, 2008 by
Jillian from Vernon Hills, IL
“Overall a good hotel, but you really need to leave the hotel and eat elsewhere. It was way too expensive to eat there and that was a bit of a disappointment.” Jun 4, 2008 by
Robin from Coral Springs, FL
“The hotel was fantastic other than the size of the room. They should not even call the room a double. If you have to climb over the bed to get to the closet window etc., you know youre in trouble. Great staff! Very helpful and friendly. Fantastic location and views of Rome.” Jun 4, 2008 by
John from Frisco, TX
“Upon arrival the wonderful service began. Friendly and helpful staff got us to our room and made us feel at home. When leaving the hotel the doorman always made sure that the cab driver knew exactly where to take us for our tour drop off. The room was clean and kept that way by a cleaning staff that we never saw. Location was excellent. We would stay there again, no questions asked!” Jun 2, 2008 by
Vida from Las Vegas, NV
“I will highly recommend this hotel to anyone. I like the location the staff was very friendly. The service in the lobby and the restaurant on the six floor was wonderful.” Jun 1, 2008 by
Cheryl from San Leandro, CA
“Expected a 5-star hotel. The first room they gave us was terrible, dinky corner room - couldn't even open the bathroom door all the way - scuffs and marks on the walls- We complained and they moved us to another which was better. but still not what I would consider five star - even in Europe. We stayed in six different hotels over our three weeks - all four stars - all nicer and all included wonderful breakfast buffets - unlike this one.” May 31, 2008 by
Kevin from Victoria, BC CA
“We can recommend this hotel for its great location and its walking distance to many major attractions. We would also like to commend on the excellent service of the hotel's guest relations especially Marco who made certain that our stay was memorable. We had contacted the hotel prior to our departure (transatlantic cruise from Miami due to our anniversary) and a bottle of Prosecco was delivered to our room with compliments of the hotel. We highly recommend the American breakfast. We understand the hotel will undergo major renovations in the fall and our room (though clean) will definitely benefit. Our star rating is based on European standard.” May 27, 2008 by
Caragh from Hoboken, NJ
“It was fantastic, great location, awesome rooftop bar, comfortable bed, service was excellent.” May 26, 2008 by
Jens from Dallas, TX
“On the first few elegant setting, but our room was relatively small, the walls and the carpet were covered with stains, scratches and other traces of long usage. The bath room however was in relatively good shape. The restaurant in the patio is extremely beautiful, but the service is not up to the standards of a 5 star establishment. The prices in general are prohibitively high, but do not match to the services provided.” May 22, 2008 by
Ravi from Belmont, CA
“This hotel is in a great location with easy walking access to most of the major attractions in Rome. The hotel was pleasant overall but I do think it would benefit from some light updating/refinishing. There were numerous old water stains on our ceiling, some large gaps in the tile in the bathroom, and the carpets were showing their age. The staff was helpful when asked questions but they did not have the level of enthusiasm that I have experienced at other deluxe/luxury hotels. Most of the aforementioned are minor details, I would gladly stay at this hotel again on my next trip to Rome!” May 20, 2008 by
Joan from Cordillera, CO
“I think this hotel has seen better days. It could use a renovation. Also, Via Sistina near the steps where the hotel is located has a lot of construction going on and is not particularly attractive.” Apr 27, 2008 by
Gordon from Calgary, AB CA
“For the tourist, this hotel is in a great location. The staff were very accommodating. Parking is limited and very expensive. Room service food is just ok. Overall our experience was great and we would recommend this hotel.” Apr 25, 2008 by
Kristoffer from Washington, DC
“Very nice hotel in a wonderful location. Room service and breakfast poor.” Apr 20, 2008 by
Patrick from Valrico, FL
“The location is great just a few yards from the top of the Spanish steps and the Spagna Metro stop. The staff is extremely helpful and always ready and willing to help you. The room was of average size by American standards but roomy for European standards. The bathroom was huge by European standards and was all marble and beautiful. The shower/bath had a normal shower head and a separate handheld shower head that could both be used at the same time. We loved this hotel!! Only wish the Wireless internet was free.” Apr 7, 2008 by
John from Bethesda, MD
“Lovely stay.” Apr 4, 2008 by
Tony from Lakeway, TX
“This hotel is in major need of a renovation, both in front desk staff and facilities. My introduction started off on the wrong foot as I was checking in next to an angry French man, then the front desk clerk tried to up-sell me to a room on a high floor, which I declined only to find that we were already booked into a room on the top floor (sleazy attempt to get more money out of me). The hotel was very busy and always cluttered with luggage and people everywhere. There was a noticeable odor throughout the hotel that I found somewhat offensive. The room was cozy and comfortable, but in general need of renovation.” Apr 1, 2008 by
Angelo from Cranston, RI
“The hotel is in a great location, the rooms were very cleaned and the concierge was very helpful.” Mar 10, 2008 by
Christiane from Amherst, MA
“This hotel is in a great location and it's architecture is was you dream of when you think of Rome. With its beautiful outdoor patio and garden with a fountain. Right at the top of the Spanish steps. Great service and luxurious rooms.” Jan 31, 2008 by
Diane from Cincinnati, OH
“We wanted to stay at Central Rome and it was a marvelous location. We had stayed at the Grand Flora for 4 days the previous week and I liked that they had coffee in the lobby in the morning. We always left early to start our day and never had time for breakfast and coffee is a must. The Intercontinental was very nice but the room was tight to walk around the bed with two people. We were in room 410. It did have a balcony which was lovely and overall it was an excellent choice for our last two evenings in Rome. I would highly recommend the hotel.” Jan 24, 2008 by
Victor from Boston, MA
“This is a fantastic hotel in a fantastic location. Much more reasonably priced than the hotel next door and with the same quality of service. Hotel roof patio and lounge were comfortable. Concierge staff is very friendly and helpful and go the extra mile to help you enjoy Rome. Highly recommended.” Jan 24, 2008 by
Peter from Concord, NC
“A great place to base your stay in Rome. The staff are attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly.” Dec 13, 2007 by
Chad from Sarasota, FL
“The hotel was nice and the staff very accommodating. However, this hotel would be great if listed as a four star and not a luxury five star. I paid for what I thought was a five and only got a four star hotel. Also, for a supposedly five star hotel in Europe, I should have never gotten a king bed that was actually two twins put side by side. Very uncomfortable seem down the middle. I understand this is common in Europe, but not at a luxury class hotel.” Dec 12, 2007 by
Larry from New Orleans, LA
“Room was great, bed soft and with linen high quality, public rooms need to be refreshing.” Dec 12, 2007 by
Edgard from West Chester, PA
“Great location, a very clean property and a beautiful old building. There were no newspapers and very few amenities. Lobby is not really nice. On top of that, it charges local phone calls at a very high price per minute (more than a euro a minute). This is stealing without shame.”
