Robert from Freeport, TX
“We really liked the entertainment and also loved iguana, the toucans and the slow turtle, the comfort of the bed very comfortable.” Mar 24, 2008 by
Diane from Weatherford, TX
“The motel was ok. Lady that checked us in was rude. I talked to them 3 times to let them know we were going to be there late and we needed a room close to the elevator. My husband is crippled. Well that did not happen until the next day. The food was ok but over priced and the service was not good. Waited a long time and they were not friendly. Roaches were in the lobby.” Jan 24, 2008 by
Ann from Liberty, TX
“I really like the hotel, it wasn't directly on the main Riverwalk strip, but still really close I would advise others to stay here only in the summer, it would be much better.” Jan 23, 2008 by
Sue from Houston, TX
“Very nice hotel which I would recommend to friends.” Jan 12, 2008 by
Anna from Thousand Oaks, CA
“Acceptable accommodations for a night or two. Would not recommend for longer as rooms were very small, electrical did not work in every outlet and plug in bathtub drain did not work causing water to become deep while showering. Rooms had no table for in-room dining. Details are not the hotels strong-suit. Staff was acceptably polite.” Jan 4, 2008 by
Michael from The Woodlands, TX
“Very clean hotel, newly refurbished directly on the Riverwalk but about a half mile walk form main river walk attractions and restaurants.” Jan 3, 2008 by
Carman from Indianapolis, IN
“Decent looking hotel- cute decor considering price, friendly staff. However, I felt like I was staying in a Motel 6 based on all the things that were wrong w/ the room (see above).” Jan 3, 2008 by
Gina from Euless, TX
“Overall-we loved this hotel. I believe that after the Riverwalk expansion and a little more updates with the rooms-this could be a 3 star hotel. The artwork and decor is beautiful!” Dec 28, 2007 by
Tomi from Irving, TX
“Very good value for the price and better quality than what the 2 stars would imply. Highly recommended, when visiting San Antonio!” Dec 27, 2007 by
Carol G. from San Angelo, TX
“Our stay was very nice. I would recommend this to everyone. The parking is great and they have security watching your vehicle.” Dec 26, 2007 by
Ron from Marble Falls, TX
“Tax was terrible. Worst Ive ever seen. $10 worth of tax on an $18 parking fee.” Dec 19, 2007 by
Erick from Katy, TX
“The hotel was not what we expected. We have spent less on better rooms at other places. Proximity to the Riverwalk was deceptive, for lack of a better term. El Tropicana sits on the Riverwalk; however, it is at the end of the Riverwalk; away from the festivities. Don't be fooled when the staff tells you that it is a short 10 15 minute walk to the restaurants and bars. It takes no less than 20 minutes to get to the restaurants and bars. I used to be in law enforcement, and I am now in the fire/ EMS service; I can't say that the walk from this hotel to the restaurants and bars is a safe one. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.” Dec 13, 2007 by
Vanessa from Houston, TX
“I think this hotel needs some decor improvement. Especially the floor hallways, the carpets were usually dirty with trash, etc, and the trash cans at the elevators were full. The first room that we were given was in very poor condition, the desk chair was stained w/ paint, the door to the adjoining room would not close fully, and the bathroom was floor was gritty and had hair in the sink. It definitely needs improvement if they are going to be classed as 21/2 star hotel. I was told that they had recently undergone a multi million $ renovation. It appears that most of this money was spent in the lobby and courtyard/pool areas. The rooms are shabbily furnished.” Oct 17, 2007 by
Holly from Rhinelander, WI
“Hotel was clean and everyone there knew their job.” Oct 13, 2007 by
Stephanie from Fort Worth, TX
“El Tropicana was a great value. The lobby and room were sparkling clean, and the staff, attentive and helpful. The bed was very comfortable, and the pillows felt like heaven under your head. One highpoint was the "oasis" area with a large turtle and several iguanas behind glass. Even though it's right on the river walk, unfortunately, it's a little too far from the "heart" of the River walk action restaurants, shops, etc. And it's quite a walk to those things. It's also dark along the river walk path and not the best to walk on at night. So taking a car and parking is a must.” Sep 9, 2007 by
Pepe from Houston, TX
“Comfortable, good location, I did not like I had to pay for use the parking lot.” Jul 24, 2007 by
Mary from Katy, TX
“It was a great hotel for the price. I would stay there again if I had a companion to walk or ride the trolley with.” Jul 17, 2007 by
Risa from La Porte, TX
“Did not receive requested wake up call or additional towels. No roll-away bed was available. It irked me to pay $20 to park 2 cars overnight.” Jul 12, 2007 by
Lois from Killeen, TX
“This hotel had extremely friendly and wonderful staff, I would definitely stay there again, it had a great atmosphere and the beds were absolutely dreamy!” Jul 8, 2007 by
Val from El Paso, TX
“Best for business travelers. Small but clean rooms. Coffee maker very poor (business needs caffeine?).” Mar 20, 2007 by
Alton from Sugar Land, TX
“Overall, I will never go to this hotel again. No parking (even though you had to pay for parking). The maid service in the morning was horrible, the did a bad job at cleaning the room. No ice in the ice machines; had to travel floors looking for ice.” Mar 18, 2007 by
Tim from Plano, TX
“So. Not real close to river walk, about ten blocks.” Mar 17, 2007 by
Chalu from Austin, TX
“I called twice to get someone to fix toilet. They finally came at midnight and the toilet was never fixed. At check out, I complained and they gave me a discount and a free gift certificate for a stay. I am happy with the resolution but not satisfied with room itself.” Mar 1, 2007 by
T.J. from Nederland, TX
“To say it is "river walk" is misleading. The river runs behind it- dirty not at all on river walk. Location is not good. I made sure to keep my teen near me when we were outside. ” Feb 22, 2007 by
Laura from Cedar Park, TX
“I greatly enjoyed my stay at the Holiday Inn TropicaNA Because I knew the hotel was still under remodeling construction, I requested a room away from the construction. The staff were very courteous and fulfilled my request. I would suggest asking for this if you book the hotel in the near future while it is still under construction. Parking is expensive - $10 a night - but otherwise this is a great deal for the money. Room service meals were fairly reasonable. This location is very convenient to downtown San Antonio. The main part of the River Walk is about a 10-15 minute walk, depending on which way you take, plus the hotel is right on the downtown Blue line trolley route ($1 per trip).” Feb 22, 2007 by
J.D. from Markham, TX
“The rooms in the hotel are okay. The lobby is beautiful. Most of the staff was very friendly. The trolley stops right in front of the hotel for those who hate to drive in San Antonio.” Feb 21, 2007 by
Lisa from Dallas, TX
“Once the construction is finished it may be worth a try. However, this time, for the price I would have opted for a different hotel.” Feb 12, 2007 by
Sean from Eddy, TX
“Overall it was an ok hotel. It was easy to access from i-35, and clean. But it was far from the river walk attractions, parking is a problem, and the rooms were smaller than expected.” Jan 29, 2007 by
K from Boise, ID
“Lipstick on a pig. It is obvious the management is trying to do their best to revive this hotel which I understand is a longtime downtown fixture. There are some nice newer design elements but that does little to alleviate the many problems this place has. Everything is in poor repair. The one working elevator groaned frighteningly and in my first trip in it I had to avoid broken glass covering the floor. The remodeling going on caused me to have to dodge furniture, tools, debris, etc. On the way to my room. There was a constant march of bugs through the bathroom, even after the staff sprayed them. When I took a shower there was an ear-piecing squeal. I'm not a plumber so I have no idea what that was about, but not pleasant first thing in the morning. The obvious walking path to the downtown attractions went past a park with numerous homeless people camped out in it. The constant stream of issues got to be almost funny after a while. I don't consider myself a hotel snob but this place is clearly sub par. I'd give it a 1 star if that existed.” Jan 25, 2007 by
Timothy from Rhinelander, WI
“This hotel is at the very end of the river walk area. It has been remodeled and the public areas are nice. However, the rooms are only average and fairly small. When that is combined with the noisy heating fan, it does not make for a comfortable night's stay.” Jan 20, 2007 by
Rob from Houston, TX
“First impression of the hotel is nice, until you get to your hall - all smelled musty. Hotel is under construction and noisy during the day. Rooms are not sound-proof at all, heard neighbors all night! Restaurant had few items on the menu, didn't bother eating there. Bar was nice with small TV¿s for sports. Friendly staff. Location is on river walk but 10-15 minute walk from any river walk attractions.” Jan 19, 2007 by
Cr from Dallas, TX
“Hotel in good location for downtown river walk activities. Convenient for business-dealing with downtown customers. They are renovating and concept is great. Consequently as of 12/06, parts are still in flux. Staff is very accommodating.” Jan 18, 2007 by
Landon from Mansfield, TX
“This hotel was a pretty pathetic attempt at a 2.5 star hotel. It was stuck in the 70's with very small rooms and a leaky elevator.” Jan 17, 2007 by
Erin from Desoto, IA
“The hotel was very nice and we had a nice view of the river walk from our room.” Jan 14, 2007 by
Liz from San Diego, CA
“It's hard to strike the right balance with this hotel review. As other reviews point out, the hotel has been going through a major renovation. Allot of it is done, particularly in the common areas, which are very nice. The pool area with its cabañas, the excellent workout facility (not just treadmills) is great, there are a couple great terrace areas overlooking the river, and the bar is a neat place to sit. The river area trolley stops literally right in front and only costs 80 cents. Now the bad news. As of early January 2007, there is still renovation going on, and hammering, etc., and lots of the hallways and rooms are still looking gritty. We made the mistake of insisting on "one bed" instead of the "two beds" offered, and got stuck on the fourth floor in the previously reviewed somewhat yucky, smelly little room overlooking the air conditioners on the roof. (We got used to it though, and the beds were very good -- we slept quite well.) The elevators also broke down in the evening, and that caused further inconveniences. Upside: the staff is excellent; friendly and very caring. They seem to be aware that there are moments when staying at this hotel is frustrating -- and they always treated us gently and attentively. Even better, dear friends made a surprise visit to san Antonio to surprise me, and the hotel, after they heard that our friends had suffered two flat tires on the way down, treated them like gold (which they always deserve!), and they enjoyed their renovated room very much. Our friends were optimistic and positive and had a great experience at the hotel. So I won't give up on this hotel yet, but really, maybe they shouldn't put people in the undecorated rooms for the time being. I have san Antonio friends who have also attended some nice receptions in the common areas, and from what they've said, you shouldn't hesitate to hold a special function there, hopefully one that doesn't require an overnight stay. The hotel is "getting there".” Jan 12, 2007 by
Nikhil from Mountain View, CA
“It was really horrible experience. As I said, no water in basin, no drainage in shower and no heat in room. They offered extra blanket. they have 100% satisfaction policy. ” Jan 10, 2007 by
Anthony from Neenah, WI
“It's a dump other than the rooms themselves. My room was very nice, but the hotel overall is glorified drive up motel. The quality of the front desk staff is all that prevented me from looking for a different place to stay.” Jan 9, 2007 by
Kathy from Corpus Christi, TX
“It was great. Highly recommend to friends. Booked a room for our some and he was suppressed. Said it was great. The price was just great. Thanks, Kathy.” Jan 8, 2007 by
Jose from Cincinnati, OH
“Nice hotel with access to the river walk that has all of the essential needs for a business traveler.” Jan 2, 2007 by
Karl from Wichita Falls, TX
“Nice hotel a bit of a walk from the main part of the river walk.” Jan 2, 2007 by
Cynthia from Dallas, TX
“Overall it was good, I have stayed atone star hotels that were nicer.” Dec 30, 2006 by
Qingsheng from College Station, TX
“Nice place, parking s.” Dec 29, 2006 by
Isa from Madison, WI
“The lobby & restaurant were carefully renovated & looked great. The hallways hinted at the age of the hotel, even after their update & the room renovation wasn't quite up to snuff. While the bathroom had new wallpaper & lighting, old bath/shower fixtures were left in place. In addition, the rooms were not well insulated for sound. The staff were super friendly at check-in however. In addition, the exercise facilities were excellent. The facilities very large, provided a wide variety of equipment in good condition & was well lighted.” Dec 29, 2006 by
Tom from Henderson, TX
“Room was clean and beds were comfortable, hotel was being remodeled, but in good condition.” Dec 28, 2006 by
Chris from Harlingen, TX
“This hotel is an older property with narrow halls etc. The room was quite adequate. I would stay there again.” Dec 28, 2006 by
Gerald from Houston, TX
“It rained every day of our trip, however this hotel was good, staff excellent and we enjoyed our stay.” Dec 26, 2006 by
Eulogia from Mcallen, TX
“I was not pleased with the hotel even though the rooms were clean and nice. There was major remodeling being done all over the hotel. We had to walk over wires and keep our eyes peeled in order to avoid tripping or falling. A tricky task when carrying luggage. ” Dec 26, 2006 by
Cathy from Kingwood, TX
“The hotel is still going through renovations so we had to walk through all the construction to get to our room. Then all through the night it smelt like something was burning. It was awful. Would never stay there again.” Dec 25, 2006 by
James from Austin, TX
“For the price this was a good value if you get a renovated room. Very quiet the night we stayed.” Dec 24, 2006 by
Dennis from Apple Valley, MN
