• Very well decorated, making small size of rooms less noticeable.
• Closet had a man's trousers -the last occupant, and the bathroom lotion was partially used.

“Certainly decorated very creatively and with quality materials. Bathrooms were a good size, although the room itself was small as you may expect in an old hotel. The room, hall and lobby very clean and bright. The canopy bed may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is an interesting thing to experience. Not a hotel I would want to stay at for a long period of time, but it is certainly a hotel with class, although I don't feel it is what one thinks of for 4 stars. More of a boutique hotel. They take pets, and if you don't have a pet, you can have a goldfish sent to your room. It would not be my first choice for a 4-star hotel.”

• Booking for only for 1 bed room when we believe we asked for 2; had to pay extra $25; parking was expensive at $45.

• Friendly welcoming staff.
• Bed and pillows extremely uncomfortable, HVAC would not work in room.

“This is a lovely boutique hotel on the first glance with a very friendly staff. I would not stay here again as the exterior appearance does not match the room. Bed was perhaps the most uncomfortable bed I have stayed in, pillows had no support, and it was clear that I was given the smallest room in the hotel. The HVAC would not work in the room and after two visits by engineers that did not fix the problem I called down to see if we could get a fan and was told to go buy one at Walgreen's. Will never stay at a Kempton again based upon this experience.”

• Clean, Staff was friendly, Comfortable rooms. Loved the wine and cheese gathering in evenings.
• Large homeless population in the area. Not the hotel's fault.

“Really liked the hotel. Rooms were small but that is normal for SFO. Very clean, comfy beds, friendly staff. Make sure requests for number of beds, etc. is hashed out prior to arriving because we got a little grief for asking for two beds when one queen had been booked. All other experiences at the hotel were excellent.”

• Location was great, and all of my expectations for service were met.
• Rooms were rather small, and I didn't have much sunlight as my room faced the small courtyard.

“Hotel was a 4 star with respect to services, staff, and amenities. Only downside is that some rooms are rather small and dark (if you're on the inside of the hotel).”

• Very central, very clean - and all the extras were free (gym, NYT, coffee, wine/cheese).
• They would not convert to two beds without a substantial additional price - very officious front desk.

“The Hotel Monaco exceeded all of our expectations. We would highly recommend the hotel and happily return to the hotel in the future. Some rooms are small, but the one we ended up staying in was comfortable.”

• The room, the bed, the duvet and the pillows were lovely. We had a wonderful sleep. We will be back again.
• The parking was $50, we had 2 cars. That was really off putting. Concessions should be made if you are a hotel guest.

“The hotel location and look was beautiful. For us, the most important thing in a hotel is the rooms. The room, although small, was very pretty. The bed, bedding and pillows were lovely. We enjoyed our stay very much.”

• Nice cozy little room. Amazing breakfast (not included).
• Parking is expensive.

“We had a very pleasant stay. The room was small by American standards, but if you've stayed at a Paris hotel, this is huge by comparison! The spa is very nice, permeated with a sense of luxury. We had an amazing breakfast (not cheap, but their crepes were astounding). My take is I'd rather stay at a cheaper less luxurious hotel, and spend the difference as a nice dinner, or a concert, or a massage. Then I'd see where my money's going! I suppose the price buys you the exclusivity.”

• Very friendly and helpful staff and funky yet lovely décor.
• It was awkward to get out of the canopy bed on the wall side.

“The hotel was lovely and we'd happily stay there again. The staff was very helpful with directions and advice on getting around town. The valet parking is $45.00, $15.00 for larger SUV's, but free if you drive a hybrid. Better yet drive around the corner on Taylor and park the car yourself for $22.00 till 6 pm the next day, it's the same lot the valet use. Parking on the street is free from 6 pm to 6 am also. We had an excellent dinner at the Grand Cafe; service was great and the atmosphere interesting.”

• The location was excellent and close to transportation.
• They refused to provide us with a room with two beds.

“The hotel was in a wonderful location. Close to all forms of public transportation. Most (not all) of the people were very helpful. Although rooms with two beds were available, she refused to provide us with one even though I did request it. Rooms had no drawers to unpack. Rooms were very small but adequate. Bathroom was wonderful and had everything possible to make our stay enjoyable.”

• Great decor, attitude, and I loved the complimentary wine hour.
• Petite would be a kind word to describe the size of my room. I wanted an in room massage - but there was no room for the table!

“The hotel was beautiful, with a friendly and engaging staff, and wonderful amenities. The whirlpool and steam room areas were very relaxing, and they have an incredible esthetician in the spa. I also really liked the vibe- classic but fun and energized, with a bit of a punky twist. Great place to stay.”

• Size and decor of room.

“The staff at this hotel is friendly and helpful. Free coffee in the morning, NY Times at the door, and hosted cocktail hour in the afternoon, are some of the excellent features of the Monaco. The location is also good. Our room, however, was small and it was decorated somewhere between the bizarre and the outlandish.”

• Unique and modern with a beautiful decor.
• The room we received was very small. Only 1 queen size bed. Almost no room for luggage.

“The hotel is a beautifully decorated boutique style hotel. We requested a 4 star, and received this hotel. Overall, we were extremely pleased with the hotel and the amenities. It was clean and modern. Given that it was my only my wife and I, the room was sufficient and we enjoyed it. If we had been traveling with children, it would have been a big problem however. With only 1 queen size bed and very limited space in the room, it would not have been possible. The hotel did not accommodate a change of room with a king size bed.”

• The hotel was nicely decorated and appointed and the grand cafe connected to the hotel was very nice as well. I would love to stay again.

• The staff was very friendly and the hotel bar and restaurant were excellent.
• The room was too small. The canopy bed dwarfed the room and it had to be pushed against a wall.

“This hotel is an excellent hotel - beautiful, friendly and accommodating. Our room was too small. You couldn't get into the drawer to store your clothes without moving a chair and the bed was pushed against a wall, leaving exit on only one side.”

• The location was perfect. The complimentary wine hour is exceptional. Personal service excellent! A very Quiet room also.
• The room was fairly small but gorgeous. Would not be spacious for children.

“I loved this hotel. It is beautiful and wonderfully located near Union Square, shopping, bus and cable car. The staff was incredibly helpful with flowers and balloons for a graduation party. The wine hour, restaurant bar and ambiance makes it very special. More for adults than children but ask for a larger room. Highly recommended and definitely would stay again!”

“This hotel is comfortable, conveniently located, but the best feature is the staff. They were all very friendly, well informed, helpful, and available and preferred just the right mix of conversation and respect for your privacy. I will very likely stay there again.”

• I really liked the location, staff, and amenities the hotel provided.
• The rooms are quite small, not much room to do anything but sit on the bed and sleep.

“I really liked how nicely the rooms were decorated and the great amenities provided by the hotel. The staff was very courteous and friendly and offered to help me find information on the net. It would be a great place if you not into spending a lot of time in the rooms because they are quite small.”

• Location, design, well maintained, building architecture, unique.
• Bums on the street.

“The hotel is well designed and maintained. It was fun to walk down the street and see the beautiful building and know that is where we were staying. It is much more unique than the Hilton down the street where we have stayed before. We wish we had spent more time just hanging out in the well decorated lobbies, instead we went out in search of a bar to hang out in.”

“Well-maintained common areas, but seems to lose its four-star possibilities when you enter the room. TV didn't work correctly (no movies), and the internet access never worked, even after calling for help. The restaurant is great, the staff is very friendly and accommodating, but seems like they have some infrastructure and/or maintenance problems.”

• The hotel is clean and the staff is friendly.
• Some of the rooms are tiny.

“Great location a few shorts blocks from union square. The hotel is located a block from the theatres. Clean hotel. Great staff. Restaurant food is great. The restaurant fills up with pre and post theatre goers. Hotel is located right across the street from a drugstore. I was warned by a clerk at the store to watch my purse. Some of the rooms are tiny. The first night we checked in late afternoon and were given a small room. The staff was happy to change our rooms to a nice size double the next day. Wine is served free of charge for 1 hour every evening. Good wine. Coffee is served in the morning. A doorman is stationed outside of the hotel.”

“We had a wonderful time. The staff was wonderful, the extras - such as complimentary wine & cheese hour, complimentary neck rub, fireplace and lounge, star bucks in the room, plus the room was spotless and the bed very comfortable! Would definitely stay there again!”

• The staff was amazing in everyway. Helpful, friendly, kind and attentive.
• The room was very small but perfectly fine for a single woman. It won't stop my return!

“This hotel takes the hotel experience and makes it unique and memorable. They use wonderful colors and shapes and art to draw you in and make it a different experience. Not your average Hyatt or Marriott. The staff are exceptionally friendly. The restaurant is wonderful with a wide variety of first class food and beverages as well as the bar. The bar is fun and the cocktails and appetizers are just right. I love this hotel. I received the best massage I have ever had at their spa. I will stay their again and plan to bring my friends and family. Also the fact that they are a pet friendly hotel also is very attractive and their wine and cheese reception really sets them apart! I visited with other guests and it reminded me of my experience with guests from hotels while traveling through Europe. You don't get that experience at too many hotels in the states.”

• Very cute, boutique hotel in an excellent location near Union Square.
• Very small room.

“The hotel staff was very friendly and attentive. The decor was modern and attractive. Everything was clean and well-kept. The room, however, was on the small side. The bed was adorable, it had a canopy and drapes, so it was like a little cabana! Even thought the room was small, it was decorated nicely, clean, smelled good, and the bathroom was a decent size. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would go there again for another short weekend stay.”

• Ultra soft bed. Grand Cafe was 4 Stars.
• Valet Parking was very expensive $39/day.

“Hotel Monaco was a very nice boutique hotel located in the heart of San Francisco. The Room was very nice and the bed was very comfortable. The staff was very helpful and friendly. If you drive, make sure you know where you want to park beforehand as Valet parking is expensive $39/day. There are lots of restaurants within walking distance as well as night clubs such as Ruby Skye (4 Stars). I would stay there again.”

• Dogs were allowed to stay in the hotel rooms.

“The Monaco Hotel is beautiful. The room was very quiet. The staff was friendly. The location is excellent. We arranged to have dinner in the Grand Cafe with friends and pay for the meal without the bill arriving. Unfortunately they couldn't produce a receipt as promised. Their bookkeeper has yet to contact us, but our card has been charged. We were also unaware that dogs are allowed in the hotel and don't know if they are restricted to specific rooms. Something that we will explore before making a reservation there again.”
