- Room was very small, seemed overly-stuffed with decorative items.
“A very pleasant hotel experience. The staff was friendly, helpful, with good suggestions for parking, etc. Conveniently located near Union Sq. and the Theater District. Easy access to all forms of transportation. Would recommend it highly.”

- One of, if not the nicest hotel in San Francisco.

- Service was impeccable, clean, great location, great amenities.
- The spa was closed, grand cafe very bad service and food.
“We had a safety issue and the service staff were amazingly efficient and effective with the solution they gave us. We got an upgrade in less than 1 minute and we received all the help needed. There was an excellent follow-up of the problem by the front desk p.m. manager is definitely an asset to the company, good for you!”

- The staff is absolutely wonderful! The hotel was spotless and beds were like a cloud!
- Nothing!
“This hotel is one of the best in Union Square. We've stayed here several times and they are always wonderful to us. The rooms are spotless and the beds are like sleeping on a cloud. They have long-term employees so you see a familiar face when you check in. The extra amenities like the wine & cheese, neck massages and pet friendliness makes this hotel so welcoming.”

- Convenient location, morning coffee and newspapers.
- Poor temperature control in my room.
“The location is very convenient, if you are willing to put up with the theater district panhandlers. The temperature in my room was difficult to control. My key card demagnetized twice--even after being there for almost a week, the staff still needed to see my ID. I appreciate the security, but since it's not a big hotel, I thought they might have learned my name or face by then. The free morning coffee with world-class newspapers in the lobby is nice, but one morning they were running a loud vacuum cleaner even though there were several guests trying to relax and read. Not a bad experience, but not excellent.”

- Nice location, nice restaurant, nice rooms.
- $50 parking. No spa, steam, or pool available during our stay.
“We found the hotel quite nice with the aforementioned amenities being shut down for repair and the $50 car sitting fee, we felt a bit slighted. The restaurant was wonderful, and the rooms were comfortable. I would stay again, if the spa and pool were available. Plus I could always park my own car in the same garage for only $25 per night.”

- The room had issues with the air conditioner. In addition, the spa area was down and we were not notified before booking.

- The windows open.
- The staff.
“There was a mix up with my reservation and the staff was cold and not helpful. Also lots of items in my honor bar were expired. One from January 2007 I even ate a few chips before I noticed. Then I received an unwanted wake up call at 5 am. If the staff was friendly and apologetic I would have over looked these things. Since they were not I will never stay here again and will not be recommending this hotel to anyone I know.”

- The staff was pretty indifferent.
“We called before hand to ask for a room with a view. We were given a room on the 5th floor. When we got to the hotel, suddenly we were on the 7th floor in a front corner room. We were really pleased. When we got to the room, the key cards wouldn't work, we went downstairs to speak with the front desk, and they checked it out. The concierge said that it looked like the computer wouldn't give us that room. So he gave us another room on the 7th floor. We got to the room and it was really small and it had no view except for the residential rooms across from us.”

- Clean, impressive decor, very friendly staff at all levels, and half a block from the Curran Theater.
- It was all good. We wish we could have stayed a few more days.

- The room was very small and had no closet or wardrobe for hanging clothes.

- Very well decorated, making small size of rooms less noticeable.
- Closet had a man's trousers -the last occupant, and the bathroom lotion was partially used.
“Certainly decorated very creatively and with quality materials. Bathrooms were a good size, although the room itself was small as you may expect in an old hotel. The room, hall and lobby very clean and bright. The canopy bed may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is an interesting thing to experience. Not a hotel I would want to stay at for a long period of time, but it is certainly a hotel with class, although I don't feel it is what one thinks of for 4 stars. More of a boutique hotel. They take pets, and if you don't have a pet, you can have a goldfish sent to your room. It would not be my first choice for a 4-star hotel.”

- Friendly welcoming staff.
- Bed and pillows extremely uncomfortable, HVAC would not work in room.
“This is a lovely boutique hotel on the first glance with a very friendly staff. I would not stay here again as the exterior appearance does not match the room. Bed was perhaps the most uncomfortable bed I have stayed in, pillows had no support, and it was clear that I was given the smallest room in the hotel. The HVAC would not work in the room and after two visits by engineers that did not fix the problem I called down to see if we could get a fan and was told to go buy one at Walgreen's. Will never stay at a Kempton again based upon this experience.”

- Clean, Staff was friendly, Comfortable rooms. Loved the wine and cheese gathering in evenings.
- Large homeless population in the area. Not the hotel's fault.
“Really liked the hotel. Rooms were small but that is normal for SFO. Very clean, comfy beds, friendly staff. Make sure requests for number of beds, etc. is hashed out prior to arriving because we got a little grief for asking for two beds when one queen had been booked. All other experiences at the hotel were excellent.”

- The room, the bed, the duvet and the pillows were lovely. We had a wonderful sleep. We will be back again.
- The parking was $50, we had 2 cars. That was really off putting. Concessions should be made if you are a hotel guest.

- Parking is expensive.
“We had a very pleasant stay. The room was small by American standards, but if you've stayed at a Paris hotel, this is huge by comparison! The spa is very nice, permeated with a sense of luxury. We had an amazing breakfast (not cheap, but their crepes were astounding). My take is I'd rather stay at a cheaper less luxurious hotel, and spend the difference as a nice dinner, or a concert, or a massage. Then I'd see where my money's going! I suppose the price buys you the exclusivity.”

- Very friendly and helpful staff and funky yet lovely décor.
- It was awkward to get out of the canopy bed on the wall side.
“The hotel was lovely and we'd happily stay there again. The staff was very helpful with directions and advice on getting around town. The valet parking is $45.00, $15.00 for larger SUV's, but free if you drive a hybrid. Better yet drive around the corner on Taylor and park the car yourself for $22.00 till 6 pm the next day, it's the same lot the valet use. Parking on the street is free from 6 pm to 6 am also. We had an excellent dinner at the Grand Cafe; service was great and the atmosphere interesting.”

- The location was excellent and close to transportation.
- They refused to provide us with a room with two beds.
“The hotel was in a wonderful location. Close to all forms of public transportation. Most (not all) of the people were very helpful. Although rooms with two beds were available, she refused to provide us with one even though I did request it. Rooms had no drawers to unpack. Rooms were very small but adequate. Bathroom was wonderful and had everything possible to make our stay enjoyable.”

- Great decor, attitude, and I loved the complimentary wine hour.
- Petite would be a kind word to describe the size of my room. I wanted an in room massage - but there was no room for the table!
“The hotel was beautiful, with a friendly and engaging staff, and wonderful amenities. The whirlpool and steam room areas were very relaxing, and they have an incredible esthetician in the spa. I also really liked the vibe- classic but fun and energized, with a bit of a punky twist. Great place to stay.”

- Free wireless access is a definite plus.
- Size and decor of room.
“The staff at this hotel is friendly and helpful. Free coffee in the morning, NY Times at the door, and hosted cocktail hour in the afternoon, are some of the excellent features of the Monaco. The location is also good. Our room, however, was small and it was decorated somewhere between the bizarre and the outlandish.”

- Unique and modern with a beautiful decor.
- The room we received was very small. Only 1 queen size bed. Almost no room for luggage.
“The hotel is a beautifully decorated boutique style hotel. We requested a 4 star, and received this hotel. Overall, we were extremely pleased with the hotel and the amenities. It was clean and modern. Given that it was my only my wife and I, the room was sufficient and we enjoyed it. If we had been traveling with children, it would have been a big problem however. With only 1 queen size bed and very limited space in the room, it would not have been possible. The hotel did not accommodate a change of room with a king size bed.”

- The hotel was nicely decorated and appointed and the grand cafe connected to the hotel was very nice as well. I would love to stay again.
