• Very family friendly great location with a pool and breakfast!
• There was no hot tub.

“Warmest pool we have EVER been in. "Continental" breakfast had everything we could ever want--eggs, bacon, fruit, breads, juice, cereals! LOVE the rooms--plenty of room to relax, socialize, work on computer. Extremely friendly staff--when the pool closed for maintenance they happily gave us a key to the hotel pool next door along with their apology. Comfortable beds, good water pressure in the shower. Much nicer than many of the 3-star hotels we have stayed in around New England!”

“The desk told me that they would need my credit card for incidentals. I did not incur any further charges. I had paid for my room and my card was charged more then $58 additionally.”

• I can't complain about anything, excellent time.

“We loved the pool area and they really enjoyed the breakfast. I loved the size of the room and the fact it had a little kitchenette to keep drinks and snacks in. Had a great time and can't wait to do this again.”

• Room was spacious - afternoon cookies, complimentary newspapers.
• The safety latch on my door was loose and could have fallen apart.

“Nice rooms - complimentary continental breakfast - pool and fitness center available - good location near Maine Mall, the airport, and the city of Portland and Old Port. I was able to get to all shopping places and to my family event with ease. It's not too far from the Sea Dogs' stadium.”

• Hockey tournament in town and kids running wild.

“The hotel was nice. Room was clean and large with a comfortable king size bed. There was a hockey tournament in Portland and there were many families staying at the hotel that were very noisy in early evening. They did settle down after 9:30 or so.”

• Housekeeping staff was good.
• Poorly trained front desk staff.

“There were numerous small issues-refrigerator set at freezing with no dial to adjust, 5 TV stations- 1 was snowy, carpet could have been cleaner; front desk staff poorly trained and slow to respond to these issues; phone system was out the night prior to our arrival and the hotel did not notify holiday Inn customer service; hotel has potential but needs better management and training of front desk staff.”

• Phone lines were down no phone service had to leave the hotel to make a call.

“The hotel was nice. The phone lines did not work for the first day/night of our stay. We had to drive to another hotel to order in. This would have been a huge liability if someone had needed 911 services.”

• Noisy, sink and closet area had no door or separation, inches from the bed; elevator noise.

“The Marriott in Portsmouth, NH, however, was excellent with no noise from elevator. The sink area was separated from sleep area. At the Holiday Express in Portland, the elevator was often noisy, as was the hallway traffic (un-insulated walls).”

• Everything was clean, new exceeded my expectations altogether!
• Didn't have the channel CW.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel, in terms of its newness and cleanliness (no stains, no holes in the bedding, nothing in disrepair), the room set up (bed separated from couch and desk, kitchenette), the great continental breakfast, and the shower supplies. We will stay here again for sure.”

• Expected a regular room and had a suite! Very nice.
• Very little parking near the front entrance.

“We were just staying about 10 hours in hotel. I was very pleasantly surprised by our room. Expecting a room and had a suite. It was very clean and well decorated. Was not directly off highway, however, hotel personnel gave me excellent directions. Would definitely stay again.”

• Was woken in the middle of the night and had to evacuate.

“Was woken in the middle of the night at 2 a.m. By a faulty fire alarm and had to evacuate to the parking lot in pouring rain. No hotel staff ever offered instructions, explanation or apology. We waited 45 minutes before being allowed to go back to our rooms. No apology, refund or discount was ever offered. All the hotel guests were bleary eyed at breakfast the next morning. A horrible experience.”

“Arrived fairly late only to find a line of people waiting to check in. Even though the phone was ringing every 2 minutes - people were waiting around for special requests, and a number of folks were checking in at the same time - the single night clerk at the desk remained courteous, enthusiastic and kept a smile on her face. I don't know what she makes per hour, but she probably deserves a raise!”

• The layout of the hotel was laid out well.
• The room smelled terrible, simply awful customer service.

“This train wreck of an experience began with a room that smelled like cat urine. There was no phone book, and when the front desk sent the requested yellow pages to the room (and hour and a half later!), the man claimed to not smell anything amiss. There was pubic hair on the bathroom floor. We requested a wake up call for 4:00 a.m. So we would not miss our 6:00 a.m. Flight. The call never came. Fortunately, I set a back-up alarm. When I brought this to the attention of the front desk clerk, she never apologized, in fact, said that it was not her problem. I told her about the other problems. Her response? "Well, you're paid up. You can leave."”

“This hotel has the potential to be one of the best options for families visiting the Portland area. Before it is, though, the staff needs to clean the public areas, pay closer attention to the cleanliness of the guest rooms and absolutely must step it up a few notches before I could possibly recommend it to anyone.”

• Was given wrong directions by hotel clerk. Couldn't find it.

“I would recommend this hotel any time. Location very close to airport, mall, great restaurants. Clean LARGE rooms with kitchenette. Dishes included! Bed was extremely comfortable.”

• Staff didn't offer any discount after I notified them of poor room conditions.

“I was very dissatisfied with this hotel experience. The lights by the bed did not work. The TV was broken. The carpet looked dirty. The towels were very linty (new thick and never washed)- I couldn't get the lint off of me after showering! Smoking room- no ashtrays.”

“We arrived to discover dirty, used towels behind the bathroom door. The movie option on the TV didn't work, although the staff tried to fix it. Coffee maker didn't work. Upon collecting our things, my daughter discovered dirty tissues under the bed. We would never recommend the Holiday Inn Express chain after this experience. I informed the staff during our stay and upon checking out, and although they were polite. They didn't/couldn't do much about it.”

• Very comfortable bed covers, did not smell any cigarette smoke and the shower had a great design.
• Vending machines that would not take our money. The hotel website boosted about their cinnamon rolls, but they were not available during our stay.

“Hotel is being renovated. Rooms smelled. Housekeeping did not change towels. Pool was closed for several days. Holiday Inn Express usually has Cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Was told they were on backorder. It would be nice if they had USA today in lieu of the local paper.”

• In the process of remodeling... I wish I was informed. Bare bones room...no pen, paper, info on breakfast in room etc.

“The hotel was in a very good location and the property was not bad structurally. I was a bit upset over the state of remodeling... numerous carts of supplies etc. in hallways, workers present and so-on. the room was very bare bones and needed more of a welcoming feel as well as the staff. I would not have included this property in your selection knowing the renovations were ongoing... very bad representation!!!!”

• Lots of space in hotel rooms and great indoor pool.
• A lot of crabs at breakfast buffet.

“We were VERY pleased overall with this hotel. We have 4 children and the rooms were spacious and the indoor pool was a lot of fun for us all. The hotel is close to everything! The Maine Mall is right down the road and Old Portland is just a short drive way! The hotel staff was nice but the one maid we saw was overloaded and behind with service. We will stay there again out next trip to Portland.”
