  • Needs updating, small rooms.

“This hotel is in a great location but is in bad need of a renovation. Rooms are cramped and outdated at least new carpet should be added. One night a man opened our door while we were sleeping not sure what would have happened if the chain wasn't there (husband got up and closed the door as the man just stood there) but that was pretty creepy.”

“Hotel was good for what we needed. Great location. Room was big but you could tell it was old. They are doing renovations soon and I think the improvements will make this hotel a great place to stay. Very close proximity to Fenway park which is where we were going.”

  • It is about to be renovated and has not maintained the facility. Also the noisy nightclub.

  • Boiler broke. It was freezing. Unfriendly staff. Average linens.

“We were very disappointed. I called early to see if I could get an upgrade to 2 beds, but it took me a couple of days to talk to the right person. And they weren't very friendly at check in either. I wouldn't choose to stay there.”

  • Great location.
  • Room was very small and the bathroom was very tiny.

“The location is perfect, in Copley square, but the rooms are very small and the bathroom is so small you practically have to climb in the bathtub to close the door. The soap and shampoo are provided in a dispenser on the wall and you can't easily tell which is which. The hotel is in the process of being updated which it sorely needs.”

  • Hotel is in a great spot, close to Copley square, prudential center, Newberry ST.
  • Dingy, old, smelly.

“I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. There are lots of deferred maintenance problems. The room was small and dingy, sink leaked, shower/tub was icky, and bath fan did not work as did the TV remote system. They have a "model" room on the 3rd floor for guests to look at.”

  • Hotel clerk was very helpful and very accommodating and upgraded me to another room because of a lack of available rooms.
  • It was over the top in the decor. Hotel lobby and room did not have enough lighting. Hotel tries too hard to be hip.

“This hotel just tries to hard to be hip, modern and edgy. Food and drinks at the hotel are outrageously expensive, for example, $30 for a bowl of yogurt, a glass of OJ and coffee.”

  • It was so clean and well decorated and the staff was amazing.
  • The only thing I did not like was that the walls were thin and noise could be heard from other rooms.

“This was one of the very best hotel experiences I have ever had, and I have traveled a lot. The only complaint I have is that the walls were not very soundproofed and I was kept awake by a neighboring room's occupant having a very loud phone conversation. Everything else about the hotel was lovely.”

  • They had no heat and didn't seem to be bothered that the halls and the room got to 59. Also, the hotel really needs to be renovated it is old.

“James McKinley ran his presidential bid from this hotel and it hasn't been renovated since. The outside is attractive as is the lobby but the very small elevator leading to exposed piping in the grandma wallpapered halls is odd. They had no heat and didn't really seem to mind or want to fix it so our room got down to 59 degrees. You really don't want to stay in this hotel.”

“Older hotel, probably 100 years old, downtown Boston which is difficult to get hotels at a decent rate. The staff was extremely kind. The elevator was small and old but historic. The staircases were very wide and titanic like with atmosphere.”

  • The staff was rude. We were double lodged, and worn down rooms.

“The staff was rude, an elderly couple walked in on me and my boyfriend, the carpets in the halls were stained, the elevator was so small, my suitcase barely fit. The wallpaper was wearing off and the rooms were awkwardly designed so you could not sit on the toilet without tilting your body. The shower was a closet.”

“There was a fire on the first floor the night I stayed there. We were out on the sidewalk for several hours. Not once did someone from the hotel come over to update us on the situation. In the service business the customer comes first. I think this was poor management.”

“Good location - relatively cheap when you consider the other hotels in the neighborhood. Old world charm is nice, but doesn't go very far when you're paying a few hundred/night. Despite it being the "budget" hotel in the neighborhood you still is paying a lot of money but bathrooms, door hardware, TV etc. look like they haven't been updated in about 20 years. Also, bed was uncomfortable & bedspread nappy. Location is the only reason to stay at this place.”

  • Staff other than front desk staff was excellent.
  • They wanted to charge us extra for a DD over a king bed.

“Hotel was old but very quant. Comfortable but had maintenance problems which were attended to promptly. It seems the hotel is going though a change of ownership and things were in need of attendance. The location was great and our stay was pleasant. After complaining to the desk staff and the revenue manager, they said "their only obligation was to provide a room for two people", period.”

“Would not recommend at any star rating. Terrible hard old beds with 6" mattresses, ripped sheets, ancient discolored bedding, dirtiest rooms I've seen in years, non-functional TV and hair dryer. One undersized elevator for 7 floors of room caused major delays. Really an awful place at any price.”

  • Decor is way outdated.

“The hotel was in a fantastic location to shopping and especially to Fen way Park. The staff gave us a different room when we requested it which was a great change. The hotel is very old which is great for history but it is in much need of a make-over, which I do believe is in the process or about to begin. That will definitely make it better and I would stay there again when the changes have taken place. The hotel does need its restaurants to be open all day rather than the limited hours that it has. That was a bad thing for my husband and me. We had to eat elsewhere due to the hours of operation.”

“While the location was great with easy access to Boston's subway and Copley Square the room lacked some of the nicer things I expect in a 3 star hotel. The room and bathroom were very small. The linens were thin and not comfortable, the blanket on the bed felt like sandpaper and the extra blanket in the closet had a hole in it. The pillows were flat and worn out. The doors, when left to close on their own, slammed very loudly, especially noticeable in the mornings when the maids were in and out of the rooms. Had I paid rack rate, I would have been furious.”

  • Room very small. Toilet in direct view as pillow where one sleeps and only few feet away. Shower/tub hard to get to; door in way; tight squeeze to close

“Room presentation was disappointing. Shower/tub in bathroom almost impossible to get to because door is in the way and edge of door up against sink and toilet edge. I am a very small and slim person and I had a hard time maneuvering to get to tub. Housing was staff very clean and efficient. Sheets and towels were ample and clean. However, front desk staff a bit snooty and judgmental. Original request was a room with 1 king-sized bed but instead got assigned to room with 1 queen (I had arrived 3 hours before check-in time and was told my room with king bed was not yet ready and would be called on cell phone when ready, but when I had returned after hotel called me, the room they gave me was not the bed size I had requested. This I found out upon entering my room. Was too tired to go back to lobby to complain (which is probably what they anticipated and hoped would happen).”

“When we arrived at the hotel (Aug 31), we were informed that we had been given a king size bed. I explained that I had requested two double beds and that I was traveling with my mother etc. They informed me that they could accommodate two double beds for an extra $40 a night! Highway robbery! Usually, requesting a king would be considered an upgrade, not two double beds! I tried explaining that my request was confirmed from three weeks prior and I was not told of this "hotel policy" but they wouldn't budge. Overall, the staff was great. But this "policy" is ludicrous!”
