Zen from Brooklyn, NY
“The hotel itself is good. It has a great location and the pool is amazing. The rooms are good in size; however, the staff is not very friendly.” Jan 6, 2008 by
Sarah from James Creek, PA
“The location and ambience in the Hotel Viking are great. But beware of getting a room in the older part of the hotel. The housekeeping staff was remiss (did not empty trash daily, or provide clean drinking glasses, etc.) Some of the room features were very well worn or inoperative- wall outlets, lamps.” Jan 6, 2008 by
G from New York, NY
“Convenient to all Newport attractions. Very upscale. Friendly and nicely decorated.” Jan 4, 2008 by
Keelan from Boston, MA
“The staff was very friendly, even when my billing was mixed up. Fancy hotel and such a good price.” Jan 4, 2008 by
Rick from Portsmouth, RI
“I was pleasantly surprised at how clean and fresh everything looked at this older Hotel. The hotel staff was very friendly, the room was comfortable and new, and it had all the amenities. The hotel was a 5 minute walk to the downtown area, with great restaurants, and shopping. I would recommend this hotel as a 3 star plus.” Dec 31, 2007 by
Craig from Avon, CT
“This is a classic old hotel that has been renovated to have all the modern amenities but still keeps its old world charm.” Nov 29, 2007 by
Zz from Danbury, CT
“Hotel was ok for the price, very basic room. The only nice thing about the room was the bathroom which was really nice. But to me it felt like a kicked up version of a Holiday Inn.” Nov 28, 2007 by
Gail from Medford, MA
“I loved the Hotel Viking. It is an historic hotel conveniently located in the heart of Newport Center. The rooms are beautiful and full of charm and were spotless. I was not thrilled with the set up of the bathroom (the toilet and shower were on one side of the room and the sink and closet were across the hall on the opposite side of the room). The food was excellent and the restaurant staff was exceptional going above and beyond the call of duty. The front desk staff was not overly friendly, but did manage to handle our check in smoothly. All in all I would have to say I would return to the Viking in the future!” Nov 27, 2007 by
Rosa from Seekonk, MA
“Overall, our stay was very pleasant. However we would have had to complain to the hotel manager as the people above us made quite a bit of noise and we didn't like listening to dogs barking. Not sure why this place allows pets. Also, one small detail. Ours had a very small, old television. I believe we were in the older section of the hotel Viking. Would stay here again.” Nov 8, 2007 by
Glenn from West Islip, NY
“Close to quality surf location, oops its a secret.” Nov 6, 2007 by
Sue from Huntington, NY
“Hotel Viking has the Newport Rhode island history, charm and up and coming feeling that the area calls for. And deserves. Located off the main road in downtown Newport, there is decent parking and there are very able employees who give the visitor help when needed and space to come and go without pressure, and enjoy the atmosphere of this wonderful town.” Oct 4, 2007 by
Sheryl from North Haven, CT
“Hotel Viking is a luxury hotel with antique charm. The furnishings are big and ornate yet beautifully delicate and welcoming. One would sink into the luxurious bedding and feel completely de-stressed from everyday life! Truly and exquisite hotel!” Oct 3, 2007 by
Rachel from New York, NY
“Walking distance from waterfront and mansion row. Courteous front desk. Allowed us to check in early with no problems. Breakfast buffet $16 with wide selection of continental and hot foods, includes juices, tea and coffee (weekends only).” Oct 1, 2007 by
Denise from Westerly, RI
“We were in town for a family wedding and did not spend too much time at the hotel. It was very clean and comfortable and met our needs well. We did want to have the breakfast buffet but there was a 45 min wait to get in, much to long. Staff was friendly and the location was an easy walk to where we needed to go.” Sep 24, 2007 by
Margaret from Massapequa Park, NY
“Very, nice and great location.” Sep 20, 2007 by
Marcelo H. from Charlotte, NC
“Great location, clean, shows some wear, valets seemed to push for tips rather then welcome and assist. Desk staff was helpful. First room was too small and unappealing. Next room was worth the price but not worth posted rate. Did I say location was great?” Sep 18, 2007 by
John from La Jolla, CA
“Great place with great to stay with extremely friendly employees. Self-Parking was a real plus.” Sep 10, 2007 by
Alvalee from Homestead, PA
“Friendly, helpful, recently remodeled room, close to shops and restaurants.” Sep 8, 2007 by
Chris from Missouri City, TX
“Elegant rooms. Ours was small, but very nice. Quality bedding, elegant bathroom. Location was good. You could walk to many things.” Sep 6, 2007 by
Bill from Marblehead, MA
“The Viking Hotel is located in the heart of downtown Newport, on Bellevue Avenue, which soon after the hotel becomes a major tourist driving route. You can walk everywhere from the Viking (if you like to walk, of course). Right down the hill is the wharf section full of restaurants and shops. Right along Bellevue close to the hotel are many finer shops and galleries. From the hotel, we did a loop to 1st beach (one end of the cliff walk) and the walked the cliff walk to Marine Avenue, winded our way balk through Salve Regina University and then hoofed it back on Bellevue, then down the hill to dinner. I love location in a hotel and inside; the Viking is great, with an indoor pool, and clean, well equipped rooms, at least for us. We were in the new wing. I have read some dud reviews of the Viking and I think that is all in the past now, all renovations are complete and the place is great.” Sep 6, 2007 by
Victoria from Trumbull, CT
“This is a wonderfully located hotel, with easy access to the shopping dining and sight seeing areas. The additional cost of 20$ for parking was unanticipated, but the valet staff was very helpful, and it was easy to retrieve the car as needed.” Sep 4, 2007 by
Donna from Syosset, NY
“Location could not be more ideal for a first time visit to Newport. All staff was found to be friendly, courteous and helpful. Room was very clean and comfortable. Loved the old-time hotel ambiance with the modern conveniences. The pool and spa were also lovely. Met, and in some ways, surpassed my expectations.” Sep 3, 2007 by
Ladd from Feura Bush, NY
“Excellent choice.” Aug 28, 2007 by
Jennifer from Chicago, IL
“Nice, pleasant and helpful staff. But for the size of the hotel, it seemed short on staff. Concierge was helpful when there was one there but they weren't there all the time and front desk was often too busy to help. Same goes for the valets and porters. If you aren't on the top floor, you will hear guests staying above you. All in all, great location and historic hotel but don't expect it to be too restful.” Aug 25, 2007 by
Patricia from Edison, NJ
“Hotel Viking is located in walking distance to all attractions in Newport. It has a historic ambiance, and I would definitely stay at this hotel again.” Aug 24, 2007 by
Kenneth from Shelton, CT
“Great hotel with awesome amenities. Good location and prompt service.” Aug 21, 2007 by
Elizabeth from Pittsford, NY
“I feel that they gave us an undecorated room. The rug had crumbs on it for 2 days and it took several complaints to have them clean it adequately. They charged us 20 dollars to park and we had to park in the employee parking lot or use valet service which would of course have cost us more.” Aug 20, 2007 by
Aurora from Staten Island, NY
“Overall I would stay here again because it is a nice historic hotel in a good location with a lovely spa & indoor swimming pool. They first put us in an old, unrenovated wing far from the elevators, with peeling paint & cracks in the ceiling. Luckily when I asked they switched us to a renovated wing but which was only available for two of our three night stay - but then they never moved us out of the better room after all. So that was very good & we were very grateful for that. And though the renovated room was smaller, it was very finely decorated. It's unfortunate that the bathroom, fitted with partially clear & frosted glass door insert did not allow for much privacy, nor did it have a fan which I suppose is fine if one is not sharing the room but my companion & I would have preferred a more private & secure bathroom. The staffs were all very nice but we waited two hours for our luggage after checking in, which significantly cut into our plans for that day. Also, a housekeeper walked in on us at one point, despite the do not disturb sign on the doorknob. And one night the valets had all gone home by 11pm so we were left to fend for ourselves upon returning from dinner. Still, they were all otherwise very friendly, helpful & accommodating. One other thing I would add is that they charge & tag on gratuities for everything. For being in the hospitality industry it can seem a bit inhospitable. For example many hotels will leave complimentary chocolates in the room; here there was a basket full of goodies with an astronomically overcharged price list - $6 for a snickers bar! Although there were a few small things one could nitpick, overall it was a beautiful hotel, very comfortable & made for a very pleasantly memorable trip.” Aug 19, 2007 by
Susan from Pittsgrove, NJ
“A very romantic place for a getaway. Many points of interest within walking distance.” Aug 19, 2007 by
Martin from Irving, TX
“Our room at the hotel Viking was in need of some updating. The television was very old and small and the bed was hard as a rock! The walls were very thin and we could hear our neighbors next to us and above us very clearly. The staff was unhelpful and often absent or seemed to be bothered by questions or providing assistance. This hotel is by no means 4-star, nor was the location convenient. I would not stay there again.” Aug 16, 2007 by
Fayann from Langhorne, PA
“Nice location. Staff was very helpful and when the hairdryer didn't work someone came up quickly with a new one. The only downside was it was noisy and I could hear the kids above my room running back and forth. Also since it's an older building the bathrooms were very tiny.” Aug 16, 2007 by
Maria from Newton, MA
“Overpriced. Location and cleanliness are the only pluses.” Aug 16, 2007 by
Laurie from Baltimore, MD
“The Hotel Viking is a wonderful surprise in the heart of Newport. Even though it's a historic property it's a huge complex by NE standards and been completely updated and feels very modern. The rooms are generous and comfortable, the staff super friendly and helpful, convenient location right on Bellevue. You could easily spend all your time right at the Viking between the spa and the pool and the dining opportunities, the outdoor patios and rocking chairs on the front porch -it's a wonderful place! Can't wait to book another stay at the Viking!” Aug 14, 2007 by
Elyna from Southington, CT
“The customer service was very good and the location is great.” Aug 13, 2007 by
Marie from Woodcliff Lake, NJ
“It was a bit over-priced considering the accommodations. The front desk personnel seemed aloof and confused about reservations. No one offered to help with our luggage and the parking fee of $20.00 was a surprise since the lot was directly behind the hotel and part of the premises. Most people arrive by vehicle and charging extra to park the car was a cheap shot. Would not choose this location again.” Aug 13, 2007 by
Melinda from Camby, IN
“All that the Hotel Viking bills itself to be is not true. Our room was next to the parking lot and seemed like an "add-on" that is treated as the "wicked step-child". For example, the ceiling creaked with every step our second floor neighbors took, causing me to suspect that the space above us was more likely a dance floor. Also, the space was cramped. I tripped every time I went into the tiny bath area since the floor was raised here about an inch. The counter space of the room with the sink and mirror was minimal. Things that needed repair were simply painted over. There were cob webs on the wall. These things just made you feel like you were in a one star hotel that gave itself a new coat of paint and then renamed itself a 3 star. When we arrived the bell hop took our bags, set them aside, and then disappeared. The front desk clerks did not seem to be familiar with their own city. We asked how to get to the "Beechwood Mansion" as we had tickets to a show there that night. The clerk said she didn't know what that was, looked around the desk and a nearby closet and then pointed out our stupidity by informing us that in Newport, it is called the "Astor's Beechwood" and that is why she didn't know what we were talking about. She then told us it was about a mile down the road. We were not offered ideas on transportation or a map. We knew that Newport was a "walking town" so we figured that was what we were expected to do. Fifty minutes later, we reached our destination, which was between 2 and 3 miles down the road! We were dressed up, I in heels, so you can imagine how disappointed we were. Since the front desk was so ill-informed of their city, we tried the concierge desk on several occasions, but no one was ever there! I relied on my memory of maps I saw on the internet when researching our trip to guide us.” Aug 13, 2007 by
Gamal from Willington, CT
“The biggest disappointment is we could not sleep because of the squeaking noise coming from the ceiling when tenants of the room above move. It seems that the hotel is too old. This problem wiped the good impression we got when we check in: very clean, decorative, and good pool area. But the most basic comfort in a hotel is to be able to sleep.” Aug 3, 2007 by
Toby from New York, NY
“It is a beautiful, full service hotel with a friendly staff. The rooms are very large and well kept. The grounds are small but well maintained and they seem to have everything. The lobby was just redone and there were weddings going on, conventions and large group meetings. Yet, the other guests were not disturbed or ignored. It is a perfect well located spot in Newport.” Jul 31, 2007 by
Jill from Bay Village, OH
“We loved the location; It was easy to get to everything we wanted to see. The staff was extremely helpful. Great atmosphere but not as upscale as we expected for a spa. We loved our stay there; it met all of our needs for a short trip.” Jul 30, 2007 by
Jo-Ann from North Smithfield, RI
“Beautiful historic hotel, friendly staff. Rooms were clean and tastefully decorated in the Newport style. This is our second stay and we would highly recommend.” Jul 25, 2007 by
Kristin L. from Dudley, MA
“I love the Hotel Viking, but our room wasn't ready for the 3 p.m. check in. It was ready at 5:00 p.m. instead. We were given drink coupons while we waited, but still would have preferred our room to be ready. Also, when entered our room to find information in there that was supposed to go to another guest who was there with a conference group. Our room had windows that did not open, and the air conditioning was a broken. That is a problem seeing it was July.” Jul 15, 2007 by
Gina from Schenectady, NY
“This hotel was truly lovely. From the lovely fragrances upon approach of the hotel. Flowers everywhere, to the decor - just wonderful. The room was incredibly comfortable although the toilet area being in a separate room from sink; took a little getting used to and sleep came very easy each night. Loved having the Dream Machine in the room. Was able to play a nice lullaby CD at bedtime to relax us all. Parking was $20/night, which was unexpected. They did have valet service. We did not utilize the hotel parking and were able to park on the street (very good neighborhood, no fear of car being broken into, even with DVD player being hooked up the entire week) and our walk to the hotel was always less than 2-3 minutes. So, no inconvenience at all to not use their lot.” Jul 14, 2007 by
Andrea from Tonawanda, NY
“The Hotel was beautiful & the price we received was even better.” Jul 12, 2007 by
Jen from Bergenfield, NJ
“The Hotel Viking is right down the street from all the sites in Newport. The Tennis Hall of Fame is within walking distance, the Mansions are a little further down the street and shopping, restaurants and nightlife are a short 2 minute drive. The staff was courteous and friendly and the rooms were very comfortable. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend this to our friends.” Jul 11, 2007 by
Kranthi from Manchester, CT
“This is a old building which is converted into a hotel. So the regular hotel comforts are missing. Old building and bad ventilation makes this not a great place especially if you go with kids.” Jul 11, 2007 by
Donna from Paramus, NJ
“We loved our trip. The hotel was great.” Jul 10, 2007 by
Jigar S. from Woodbridge, NJ
“Bathroom was too small n congested. And hotel little interior. And they need to change TV. And one more thing which is really not likable is they charge $20/- parking for one night which is so disgusting. One night parking is not worth of $20 and I think even I paid more money for room also. So I would be more happy to get one more night free in weekend in month of July.” Jul 9, 2007 by
Gregory from Dracut, MA
“The hotel was worth every penny. The hotel staff was extremely polite and helpful. The room was beautiful and perfect for me and my girlfriend who also fell in love with the spa. I would highly recommend hotel Viking.” Jul 9, 2007 by
Julie from Burlington, VT
“I was thoroughly impressed with the Hotel Viking. The room was large, clean and very comfortable. The fitness center and pool were wonderful, and the staff was very accommodating with regards to a late checkout. And the location was perfect.” Jul 6, 2007 by
Alan from Portsmouth, NH
“The all in all stay was perfect; the rooms were kept clean, courteous staff and the location. We just loved being able to leave the car and walk to all the main attractions. Cliff Walk, Mansions, the Wharf Areas, Thames Street and all the fabulous restaurants. We even enjoyed it so much at the hotel and Newport, we stayed an extra night.” Hotel Representatives:
