“Great hotel. You have to valet car. All of Newport is like that so no sense complaining. Great bar on roof. Very scenic and nice sunsets over the bay. Hotel is located about 5 blocks from Wharf so if you do not like walking try the Marriott. I liked this hotel better. Worth the walking.”

• I needed access to a fax machine and notary, they had both!
• 22.00 a day for parking.

“The front desk helped us when we needed a fax machine and a notary when our debit account had been breeched a couple of days before our trip to Newport leaving us with zero in our account. With their help, and our banks, we had our money back the next day.”

• There was a small wet part of the ceiling seen and water pressure in the shower was low in room 3031.

• The room was very clean, and the location was near all the action.
• The gym closed at 11PM. It is an understandable time, I just wish it closed later.

“The hotel is wonderful. The walls are a little thin, and I could hear the conversation in the next room. I am sure they were just as informed of the loud things I was doing in my room with my fiancee' Watching TV. They have got great flat screens, and a free internet connection. I had a wonderful experience, I will definitely go back when I return to Rhode Island. The staff was great, the ambiance was comfortable I had a wonderful stay.”

“Fabulous hotel and location. Rooms are beautiful, roof top bar gives you great view of harbor and city. Heated pool for after beach swimming. Walking distance of everything in Newport. Be aware of the charge for parking in the summer months of $22.”

• Public areas were very nicely decorated and clean. Also, the location was excellent.
• Room was very small and expensive. Half of the electrical outlets did not work and we did not have a flat-screen TV, as advertised.

“A mixed experience, for the money. Location and public areas were very nice. The staff was generally attentive. Linens, however, are only changed every 3 days and we did not receive new robes after the 1st day. In addition, the movie service was not working. They gave us complementary newspapers instead.”

• Many rooms recently renovated; Ask for one of these; They are excellent. Breakfast on the outdoor patio is memorable.
• Bathroom was very tiny (in a closet more or less) but clean.

“A large hotel in the "Downtown" area of Newport, the Viking is convenient to all Newport attractions. But if you prefer walking, this may not work as well. However the hotel offers a memorable London taxi shuttle to all local destinations, or a valet (mandatory but free barring tips) can bring your car up within minutes. Our room was newly renovated and stylish without being stuffy. On the downside, the bathroom was a converted closet (or at least looked that way), had a mini sink, standard (not elongated) toilet literally under the toilet, and a stall shower with a rain shower. Toiletries & towels were high quality. The bar / restaurant ("One Bellevue") was not notable for food or ambience. But eating breakfast on the outdoor patio was definitely memorable. Most of all, the entire staff was highly solicitous without any semblance of snobbery or expecting tips. They appeared to be either fresh grads or even coeds on break, but they were efficient to a fault. Overall, a great experience, and I would definitely recommend it, as well as consider staying there again myself.”

• Nice lobby and staff.
• Our room was at the very farthest end of an extremely long and winding corridor. They had a new coffeemaker that was horrible. I had two cups of grinds.

“It is a very nice older hotel on the hill where we walked down hill to an excellent restaurant called the Brick Alley both for lunch and dinner. The room was also quaint but very far from the lobby. The restaurant was very pricey and therefore we chose elsewhere. They charge for parking but we objected and therefore did not charge us.”

• The setting and furniture is great.
• On the same floor, there are at least three levels. There are stairs between the levels which is really inconvenient for carrying luggage.

“The hotel is old. But it is clean and in good condition. The setting is classic which make you feel luxury. Furniture fit the style of the hotel. However, the lobby and hallway are small and narrow. Stairs between different levels on the same floor make it hard to carry luggage from one end of the hallway to another. The parking cost is $22/day. You need to walk a few of blocks to attractions and restaurants. It is not a problem if you do not mind its expensive on-sit restaurant.”

• Beds were extremely comfortable.
• The hotel atmosphere was kind of stuffy or snobbish/pool was too far from the rooms. I had to walk through hotel in my bathing suit which was awkward.

“Overall, the hotel was beautiful and luxurious. The staff was helpful but it was a little overwhelming because the atmosphere was stuffy and uptight. Beds were extremely comfortable and room were clean. Pool area was clean and pool was heated. I had a great time and I would stay again and recommend it to friends.”

• Can't think of anything we didn't like. Everything was excellent.

“This is a first class hotel in a prime location in Newport RI. We arrived and parked our car at the Hotel Viking and didn't have to use it again during our 2 day stay. It's located so convenient to all the shops and restaurants in the downtown and wharf areas. We were able to walk to everything we wanted to see and also the restaurants we wanted to dine at. We would highly recommend The Hotel Viking to everyone.”

• Beds were very comfortable. Sink & mirror in separate room from shower/toilet was convenient.
• Hidden charges, dirty coffee pot & mugs, lamp shades coming apart, poor water pressure in shower.

“We were placed in a room at a back corner of the hotel across from the housekeeping closet and overlooking the back parking lot. The lamp shades were literally coming apart. The water pressure in the shower was so low; I had trouble getting the shampoo rinsed out of my hair. The food basket in the room had incredibly high prices $7.50 for a tiny container of jelly beans! (Beware families with small children!) The coffee pot & mugs in the room were too dirty to use, so I ordered a $6 pot of room service coffee and the total bill (with a $3 gratuity + tax) was $10.58! The newspaper contained a sticky note on an inside section that the cost was included in the hotel bill at 19 cents per weekday. Self parking in the surface lot across the street was $22 per night. The front desk staff was rude; I waited in line for five minutes to check out and the front desk helped a woman who appeared from no where, claiming she was in line in front of me. This hotel certainly did not live up to the reputation it has in the community and I would not stay there again due to the room conditions, additional hidden charges, and feeling unwelcome.”

• It was a great old historic hotel in a perfect location.
• The rooms were not cleaned very well and the old building needs a lot of TLC.

“The hotel is a great location and the lobby, restaurant, etc. have been beautifully restored. The older part of the hotel (and largest part) is really in need of an update. The carpet is dirty. The walls/doors have fingerprints all over them and the maid service wasn't great. I liked the old style furniture but would have preferred a cleaner setting and a TV that worked!”

• We did not need a car because the hotel was within walking distance of shops and food.
• They did not take into consideration anything about our room and did not compensate.

“We were placed in the older part of the hotel. They did not have any rooms to upgrade to the newer part of the hotel I am very upset I was expecting a relaxing two day stay and I was upset the second I stepped into the room and the room had a heavy damp mold smell I was very upset.”

• Great location, old world charm.
• Shower did not drain, cheap beds, heard people above walking around: loud!

“This was not the 3-4 star hotel. Beds were cheap and wobbly, shower did not drain. Found hairs on the towels. Location is great.”

• Dining room was excellent, beautiful bar with pick foods.
• The rooms were so tiny. Frosted glass on the bathroom door that you could almost see through.

• The staff was very friendly and accommodating.
• Room was small bedding was substandard and furniture was old and beat up.

“The hotel Viking is in a great location and the staff is very friendly. However the room is very small especially the bathroom. The bedding was not up to standards no down comforter and sheets very rough. If you are used to staying at Marriott's, Hyatt's etc this will be well below your standards.”

• Beautiful building, room was attractive and clean.
• It was noisy in the room, people taking and coughing in the next room, doors banging and the ice machine was right outside our door.

“For the star level - I expected less families with children - it was huge hotel the walk to our room was long, the view from our room was the parking lot, the ice machine and how noisy our room was disappointing. I did appreciate how friendly the staff was, and how beautiful the room was.”

• The people were fantastic.
• We could smell smoke in the hallway.

“The Hotel Viking is beautiful, charming and historical. We had planned this "Sisters" Weekend a few months ago. Everyone was very accommodating. Especially the front desk. We received daily calls from the front desk to see if we needed anything. We thought that was very thoughtful. I had left something behind and called the next day, they had it and will send it UPS to me. We will return for our next weekend away.”

• The fitness center was nice, the pool was big, and the furniture and atmosphere were nice too.
• I wish the bathroom was bigger and it had a hot tub. Too many kids at this hotel. Price was a little high too.

• Hotel is very upscale and beautiful, the pool area is nice.
• Our room was not serviced well by housekeeping and was in some disrepair.

“The location and ambience in the Hotel Viking are great. But beware of getting a room in the older part of the hotel. The housekeeping staff was remiss (did not empty trash daily, or provide clean drinking glasses, etc.) Some of the room features were very well worn or inoperative- wall outlets, lamps.”

• I thought the room was exceptional clean, and everything was in new condition.
• I honestly can not think of one.

“I was pleasantly surprised at how clean and fresh everything looked at this older Hotel. The hotel staff was very friendly, the room was comfortable and new, and it had all the amenities. The hotel was a 5 minute walk to the downtown area, with great restaurants, and shopping. I would recommend this hotel as a 3 star plus.”

• The parking situation, why should I have to pay to park at a hotel I am staying at.

“Hotel was ok for the price, very basic room. The only nice thing about the room was the bathroom which was really nice. But to me it felt like a kicked up version of a Holiday Inn.”

• Was asked to pay an additional fee of $75.00 when requesting a room change.

“I loved the Hotel Viking. It is an historic hotel conveniently located in the heart of Newport Center. The rooms are beautiful and full of charm and were spotless. I was not thrilled with the set up of the bathroom (the toilet and shower were on one side of the room and the sink and closet were across the hall on the opposite side of the room). The food was excellent and the restaurant staff was exceptional going above and beyond the call of duty. The front desk staff was not overly friendly, but did manage to handle our check in smoothly. All in all I would have to say I would return to the Viking in the future!”

• This hotel has a very nice decor and was clean. The staff was friendly and the location was great.
• Noise level. The folks above sounded like they were running a marathon and we heard dogs barking as this place allows pets.

“Overall, our stay was very pleasant. However we would have had to complain to the hotel manager as the people above us made quite a bit of noise and we didn't like listening to dogs barking. Not sure why this place allows pets. Also, one small detail. Ours had a very small, old television. I believe we were in the older section of the hotel Viking. Would stay here again.”
