“Nice place. Very clean. We got in late that night. Street noise levels a little loud in the morning. Tried to dull the noise with the room fan but it didn't work.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Oct 16, 2006 by
Linda from Sugarloaf Shores, FL
“Location was nice great views from our south-facing window of museum, Central Park and the NYC skyline. Safe area. Room was adequately appointed and clean. We liked the fact that the hotel had an intimate feeling not too large. Would definitely return.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Oct 1, 2006 by

“Great location - no services of any kind even getting extra towels was a problem no dining room - no bar - no nothing. Breakfast was over-priced and minimal a place to hang your hat- nothing else.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Sep 11, 2006 by

“Great price/value in upper West Side of NYC. Location can't be beat, convenient to Central Park, subway lines, great restaurants nearby. Good parking for $26 a day in the American Museum of Natural History across the street.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Sep 5, 2006 by

“For a short business trip or to visit tourist attractions on the west side of New York, this hotel is a good value for the money.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Aug 19, 2006 by

“This is a small, boutique hotel situated directly across from the Rose Hayden Planetarium at the museum of Natural History. Good location for nice area restaurants, subway and Central Park.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Aug 14, 2006 by

“Great location for families, directly across from Museum of Natural History and a block from Central Park. Beautiful lobby. Room originally assigned was drab and small; was subsequently reassigned to far nicer room, large, sunny, windows that open, great toiletries. Small bathrooms.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Aug 3, 2006 by

“This is the first time we've stayed in a hotel in NYC because our friends and family ran out of room. We were very pleased with this hotel. The hotel was close to everyone we knew, convenient to the subway and shopping and was extremely quiet (we also lucked out and got a room in the back. The room was very clean and comfortable. We will definitely be back.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Jul 30, 2006 by

“Great location and the quality exceeds a 2.5 star hotel.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Jul 30, 2006 by
Jeff from Miller Place, NY
“The staff was friendly, but not very informative. The room was small, with a odorless closet that you had to trip over the night stand to get into. We spent very little time there; it was just a bed. There is no lounge, and the $16 continental breakfast would have been a sacrifice if it was FREE!” Jun 29, 2006 by
Katy from Costa Mesa, CA
“We were very pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of our room, and were pleased that the hotel fulfilled our request for 2 beds rather than one queen (they apparently have no king beds). The marble and wood lobby was beautiful, and our room overlooked the park like grounds of the Natural History Museum. A subway stop was at the end of the block, and there were numerous reasonably priced restaurants and delis within a 2-block radius. The weather was very hot and humid during our stay, and we were thankful for the effective room air conditioner. On the one occasion when it malfunctioned and caused the power to go out in our room, the hotel staff was very responsive and courteous and the problem was resolved within minutes. The hotel restaurant is only open for breakfast, and although we enjoyed the food and service, it was expensive when compared to the many other options outside the hotel. We would have appreciated the ability to make coffee or tea in our room, and the bathroom, while lovely, had little room for our toiletries. Overall, though, our stay was very enjoyable and the hotel exceeded our expectations.” Jun 28, 2006 by
Jasmin from Roanoke, VA
“I had a great time. From the bellman to the front desk staff, they would always be prompt to answer questions and help with accommodation I never had to open the door, there was always someone to do it for us. Being few feet from Central Park and some of the best restaurants in NYC if defiantly a perk. Also the museum of natural history is right in front of the hotel, could not ask for more. Subway and bus where easily accessible from the hotel. I never had to use a taxi.” Jun 23, 2006 by
Janice from Greensboro, NC
“I have stayed at this hotel before and found it to be comfortable and affordable. Our room was very quiet. Breakfast was too expensive and we did have to walk to coffee shops in the area.” May 16, 2006 by
Leon from Washington, DC
“Adequate but overpriced, like so much else in NYC.” May 15, 2006 by
Nick from Saratoga Springs, NY
“We travel to NYC a few times per year on business or for pleasure. This hotel was simply superb in terms of location and price. The room was large, airy and had a very nice sized bathroom - all three of those features are unusual for the price in NYC. High speed Internet was available for $10 per 24 hours, and we parked in the Museum of Natural History parking garage at a 1/2 off discount ($26 per 24 hours instead of $42). Get your parking ticket stamped at the front desk for that. Bring your coffeemaker, though, if you like your coffee in your room - they don't have one in the rooms! We read that ahead of time, and brought our travel coffeemaker, along with some good espresso We will definitely return to this hotel.” Apr 15, 2006 by
K. from Arlington, VA
“I would recommend this hotel. It was right across the street from the Natural History Museum and the neighborhood was full of great restaurants. The subway was at the end of the block and did not even require a street crossing. Staff was helpful with any requests and recommendations.” Mar 13, 2006 by
Ken from Kingston, OK
“Main reason we used the hotel was family live just around corner. Were well pleased with accommodations. Even upgraded for no apparent reason to park side view, street side 3rd floor. Staff at desk did not even acknowledge us when we came or went, but hey, that's New York.” Mar 8, 2006 by
Donna from Santa Rosa, CA
“Small boutique hotel, perfect location overlooking Museum of Natural History, near Central Park and lots of restaurants, delis, etc., helpful staff, including concierge who got 4th row center seats for show I wanted to see in 5 minutes. Will definitely be my destination next time I am in NY.” Mar 4, 2006 by
Jim from Charlton, MA
“Great location, moderately priced, overall good experience!” Nov 27, 2005 by
Becky from Washington, CT
“If you want an affordable room on the Upper West Side, this place is pretty darn good.” Oct 19, 2005 by
Peter from Chicago, IL
“One of my favorite NYC hotels, quiet on upper West Side, small clean efficient. Some have said the staff is not friendly but they seemed ok - typical for NYC. The 8th Ave subway is a half block away and the bus to East Side at the corner. It is a very convenient hotel.” Sep 23, 2005 by
Martha from Syracuse, NY
“If you want to pay a lot of money and get a very small, but clean room than this is the hotel for you. Especially if you do not like coffee. Since none was provided. No room service and no food. No bar.” Aug 6, 2005 by
Alan from Fairview, WV
“The stay was excellent until we paid the parking. We were told that the Excelsior had an "agreement" with the Museum across the street concerning parking--$27 a day. Well we were actually charged $46 a day. Had we known we could have found parking cheaper since we did not use the car at all once we had checked into the hotel. Other than that it was an enjoyable experience.” Aug 3, 2005 by
Marilyn from Grantham, NH
“Clean room, friendly and helpful staff and in a quiet location. Within a block or two of a Starbucks, Zabar and other eating establishments.” Aug 1, 2005 by
Jeff from Monroe, NY
“excellent location, friendly staff, very clean” Jun 13, 2005 by
Phil from Evans, GA
“Good location, convenient to Central Park, Museums, and Subway. Staff at Hotel were not welcoming/outgoing----seemed to be putting in their time.” Jun 7, 2005 by
Sharon from Houston, TX
“The Excelsior is a small and lovely hotel conveniently located in a quiet, accessible neighborhood. Although the breakfast buffet did not serve my needs (and was expensive), all other aspects of the experience were great. (And Zabar's nearby allowed me to have food I could enjoy and afford!)” Apr 3, 2005 by
Peter from Chicago, IL
“The Excelsior Hotel was much nicer than I would have expected for a 2 and 1/2 star rating. My room was quite nice--clean and relatively spacious. Great shower and pretty quiet. Free bottled water and USA Today were nice touches. The location was terrific--right by Central Park, the C and E trains, Columbus Ave. and close enough to the 1 and the 9 trains and Broadway. Overall, it was as good as one could ask for at a reasonable price in the Upper West Side.” Mar 15, 2005 by
Blair from Camp Hill, PA
“For an Upper West Side hotel, the location was excellent - near Central Park; Museum of Natural History; restaurants on Columbus & Amsterdam Aves. Not many services at hotel itself (no valet parking; no restaurant or bar; no room service). The hotel was clean and very elegant looking. It's a great upper west side hotel for those who just want a very nice place to sleep but plan to go out for activities, food, drinks, & snacks etc.” Mar 2, 2005 by
Betsey from Somerville, MA
“Excellent old-=fashioned hotel. The location can't be beat as far as I'm concerned. Just half a block from Central Park. Subway just steps away.” Mar 1, 2005 by
Gerald from Annapolis, MD
“Convenient, well-decorated hotel, friendly but not overbearing staff” Feb 25, 2005 by
James from Washington, DC
“If you want to avoid the over-crowded midtown area, the Excelsior is the ticket for a good, clean room in a safe neighborhood. Less than a block from Central Park and from the 81st St station on the A & C lines, neighborhood restaurants on the surrounding blocks - the combination of convenience, location and value can't be beaten in my opinion.” Feb 21, 2005 by
Ken from Nmiami, FL
“Decent hotel with small old rooms, located in a safe ,interesting part of the upper west side.” Sep 25, 2004 by

Jeff B. from Minneapolis “Was a nice older hotel on the Upper West Side. Very clean with comfortable and spacious rooms. Would recommend it to anyone visiting New York, especially those looking for a quieter neighborhood near Central Park.” Sep 25, 2004 by
Netta K. from Bet Arye “I wish they will offer Hi-Fi (wireless) free internet access, as many business hotels do.” Sep 24, 2004 by
Shirlee C. from Dallas “The Excelsior Hotel on 81st St. in NYC was within a block from Central Park and a subway stop. The Museum of Natural History was right across the street. It was nice to stay in an urban residential neighborhood instead of a commercial area. We had a great time.” Sep 22, 2004 by
Mel T. from Merrimack “Super Staff exceeded expectations in everyway.” Sep 14, 2004 by
Mike K. from Eagan, MN “The Excelsior hotel is a very up scale hotel and be in the upper west side makes a great location as well.” Hotel Representatives:
