• Our room was not open-remodeling, but no noise-very clean.

• Charming, historic, clever and witty (due to its literacy legacy), and well-maintained.
• Front desk staff wasn't very friendly - seemed in a hurry to get rid of you.

“The Algonquin Hotel cleverly capitalizes on its past fame as the home of the famous literary Algonquin Round Table, with New Yorker cartoons on the wallpaper, and decor that reflects its 1920's and 30's heyday. But it does not rest on its laurels: small but well designed room, with charming architectural and design touches, flat screen TV, bath amenities from Bath and Body Works, and a very soft and comfortable bed. The restaurant and bar are well known, but beyond my budget - however the hotel lobby bar has an old-time luxury appeal. The visitor feels like a 30s movie star - at least until the first contact with the harried and unenthusiastic reception staff.”

• It was a safe environment and very clean and comfortable.
• Was charged a holding fee of 110.00 on my debit card without notifying me.

“This hotel seemed very safe. The location was great, only 3 blocks from Times Square. The room was small but very comfortable and extremely clean. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.”

• Location (2 blocks to times square) yet on a quieter street.
• Not many amenities, small front desk, not many public spaces.

“The hotel was fine, but the room was great. Upgrading to two twins would have cost $60 extra! That's my only complaint.”

• The staff is outstanding, great location, great beds.
• No negative comments.

“This is a wonderful little hotel in a great location. The staff could not have been nicer. I was traveling with my 13-year-old daughter and we felt very safe walking in this neighborhood at night. Every time we entered the hotel, the staff made us feel like we had come home - a rare feeling in such a big city. They upgraded our room, which was very comfortable and quiet. The beds are heavenly! Matilda the cat is just as charming as the staff. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone.”

• Very attentive staff; concerned about my complaint that outside work noise.
• Bathrooms needed to be upgraded; Elevators were slow.

“Did not like the fact that we could not get a room with 2 beds without paying more and therefore, were forced to sleep 2 in a queen. Major construction was occurring right outside window. Did like the staff, surroundings and location all were great.”

• Very small room - I was told to expect this in NY. Would not work for 2 people.

“Very nice for a business traveler. Good location and extremely helpful staff. Room comfortable for one person, nice linens and disk/internet. Good restaurant too. Location was good for my meetings.”

“Hotels was ok. Again did not appreciate being switched from original hotel. Was notified of switch at attempted checked-in. No explanation provided - as to why they had to close a whole floor within the premises and send me to another hotel.”

“Our hotel didn't have the room for us due to some plumbing issue. They sent us to next door hotel called Iroquois. I love the location because it's near by Times Square and the theatre district. The part I like the most is that they gave us a pamphlet and magazine on children's activities. Where to eat, what to do and stuff kids enjoy.”

• There were some nice modern upgrades like the flat screen TV in the room. I like the closet as well for a room that size.
• The hotel was too old, with dark, dreary hallways and lobby. The room was very small with thin linens on the bed, no roll away.

“The hotel was nice enough, neat and clean. However, not at all worth the price. The rooms are very small, so is the bathroom. The lobby and elevator are too dark. The hallways are narrow. There is barely room to move around the bed, so a roll away was out of the question. It's not good for kids of any age. The blanket was thread bare and too thin. I don't like animals roaming around where I eat and no one in my family likes cats, I was not amused. This hotel might be suitable for older leisure travelers. The location is great and the staff seemed friendly enough.”

“Great hotel with lovely ambiance, history & superb location in midtown/theater district. I would consider this a "boutique hotel" long before they every came up with that term. Rooms are not large, but that is not unusual in Manhattan. Recently refurbished so the atmosphere is very enjoyable. They are building an adjacent structure on the 45th street side so there was construction noise like in a lot of areas of NYC.”

• Somewhat noisy from a street noise perspective.

“This hotel was a boutique type hotel. Not too many extra amenities but had a very nice ambience. Staff allowed us to print our flight boarding passes at the front desk and gave helpful advise regarding directions and dining tips. The free wireless network was a plus. Unfortunately the rooms were somewhat small and had no room for a roll-away for an extra person.”

• The tiles on the step into the stand up shower had water damage. Needed attention.

“The location was great. The rooms were up to date for an old hotel. Very clean hotel. The staff was accommodating to our needs. Good concierge. The cocktail area was elegant and relaxing. The shower was the only thing I that needed a comment.”

• It is a Grand Old N.Y. Hotel. Lots of ambiance.
• Restaurant is not private - opens up to front desk.

“The Algonquin is a wonderful, old NY hotel. It is very convenient to Broadway Theaters, Times Sq., good restaurants, etc. The staff goes out of their way to help. The rooms have been updated but are small. At this time there is heavy construction immediately behind the hotel starting at 7 a.m. All in all, the Algonquin is a great choice in the heart of mid-town Manhattan.”

• My room had no heat and the temp outside went down to 35F.

“I would think twice about staying here again. They Moved me the next day but it was a cold night my first night at the Algonquin. They offered to make an amend on my next stay but they were sold out the night I needed to come back to NYC.”

• The cat was awesome! The history of the location was cool.
• The bathroom toilet kept me up all night. Pipes kept backing up, making horrid noise.

“I was there on business but my husband came down on travel to visit me. We both thought the hotel was fun and comfortable. It was not a place where I would book for a romantic get away. The staff was very nice and helpful. Just seeing a pet on site made the hotel atmosphere feel more family and relaxing. That was a bonus. Only down side was the toilet in our room keep bubbling up. It sounded as if the toilet was over flowing which woke me up thought-out the night. This happened every night. :(.”

• Rooms are quite small and the desk staff is not cheerful.

“The Algonquin is well worth the price. The location alone would make it at top. The bellman, there for 37 years, was the friendliest and most informative of any of the staff. The desk staff is best avoided (especially the ladies behind the desk). All the rooms have been renovated very recently and the beds are quite comfortable. Although I did not dine there, the bar and restaurant look quite inviting. Generally a very good buy.”

• The hotel location and history of the hotel. The doormen and the housekeeping are excellent.
• The front desk staff are not trained properly. They are not helpful or welcoming.

“I did not encounter all the noise issues that one expects in NY, the room was very quiet albeit very small. What I did experience was an unfriendly and unwilling front desk staff. Maybe the doormen/bellmen and the pleasant housekeepers and maintenance crew make up for the front desk? I manage a hotel and I say clean it up guys. Your front desk is your first impression. Get some professionals.”

• The room was too small and cramped, with loud street noise.

“The hotel is awesome, the staff was great, it was clean and nicely appointed. But our room was located on the street, directly above the front entrance where cabbies and bellboys conversed loudly, and traffic noise made it impossible to sleep. The room was as tiny as a cruise ship cabin. Clean and nicely appointed with a comfortable bed, but way too small for two people.”

• Dining in hotel was too expensive. Had to eat out.

“The rooms were small but very nice. The staff was helpful and very friendly. Hotel location was perfect just between Time Square and 5th Avenue. You can walk almost everywhere you want to see and Grand Central Subway terminal is only a 5 minute walk as well. The hotel restaurant is very expensive but there is a great diner two doors down and carts on the street are great for breakfast or a quick snack. Overall a great experience. We would definitely stay there again.”
