“The decor of the room was very dated and the rooms were hard to access from the parking lot. The elevator did not work, but luckily the building we were in was only 3 stories. My husband and I have used Priceline and Hotwire several times and this certainly was not a 4 star hotel.” Sep 1, 2009 by
Kevin from Rochester,NY
“The hotel was out of the way of everything. At check in they hit you with a resort fee. The room was fair. Very limited amenities. Not a 3 or 4 star more like a 2 at best.” Aug 12, 2009 by
Jennifer from Dallas,TX
“The only worthy experience writing about was the food and dining staff. The food was excellent. Our stay was horrible and I will NOT be returning. Our room didn't have key -- we had to go to the front desk every time we wanted to be let in. The staff was very unfriendly and frustrated because nothing in the hotel seemed to work. The room had a skittles looking carpet and the decor was a cross between the 70's and the country.” Sep 10, 2008 by
Torrey from Quakertown, PA
“Room with a single bed the next night, and then switch to a room with two beds for the rest of the stay as the second night they were booked solid and did not have a room with two beds available. We were also asked if we wanted to place a credit card on file with the hotel. Placed luggage on luggage cart ourselves and moved into room that night. The next morning, we packed up all our bags, put them on a luggage cart ourselves again. When we went to the front desk and explained we were told to switch rooms, the hotel representative said "oh you're in room 2305? I'm so sorry, I should have called you this morning, you don't have to move rooms. We became extremely upset at this point as we had just spent over half an hour of our vacation packing up our stuff. Now we had to move back into the same room and unpack. Mid-week we were woken up at 9:00 am to hear them remodeling the room next to us. There was hammering until about noon. Our faucet was also leaking during our stay. We complained to the front desk about both the remodeling noise and the leaky faucet. We were told the faucet would be repaired and the worst of the remodeling was over with. For our inconvenience, we would receive a free Sunday brunch at their on site restaurant called the Swan Terra.” Sep 4, 2008 by
Leigh from Silver Spring, MD
“This hotel is a far cry from 4 star. Although the beds are comfortable, the bedding is at best mediocre and the rooms need renovating. It's an Inn, keep in mind. It's nothing fancy. I think for the price and supposed quality, I could've gotten the better accommodations staying at the Hilton or something equivalent. The room service (food) was mediocre and they delivered it a lot earlier than asked. Because of the dampness of the room the first night, I ended up coughing all through the night and waking up feeling sickly. It was not an enjoyable experience. I also got charged resort fees and extra taxes.” Aug 25, 2008 by
Michael from Newark, DE
“The beds are comfortable, the grounds are very pretty. If you are looking for luxury in the Virginia Beach area do not go to this place.” Aug 20, 2008 by
Joe from Decatur, GA
“It is luxurious, well designed and the staff is excellent.” Aug 6, 2008 by
Lynn from Nutley, NJ
“Very lovely garden, running trail needs to be cleaned of the geese droppings, practically unusable. Hotel welcoming procedures were mediocre in comparison to other top hotels.” Aug 2, 2008 by
John from Maidens, VA
“Attractive colonial style brick buildings on an open, expensive campus. Rooms decor was an odd mix of up-scale with a cheap carpet. The bed was too soft. Restaurant service was slow. It is a long way to the beach, so it's not a beach hotel though it claims to be a resort. It does have a nice pool, water slide and tennis courts. Ok for the price.” Jul 30, 2008 by
Terry from Yeadon, PA
“Nice hotel. Two beautiful pools and Jacuzzi. The people and staff was very friendly. It was a very relaxed atmosphere/.” Jul 30, 2008 by
Cheryl from Cadwell, HI
“We drove 10 hours straight to see our son (that we haven't seen in a year), stationed in Camp Pendleton CA and was in Virginia Beach for few months taking classes. We live in Georgia and it a great opportunity to go visit him, for the Fourth of July weekend. So hotel was overprice for room accommodation and room service and dirty air condition made loud noise went it was running, which was very annoying.” Jul 29, 2008 by
Patrick from Lafayette, CA
“To call this a 4 star is a travesty. The service was equivalent to a Best Western. They did not have microwaves available despite the fact we called to reserve one for our kids. This is not a 4 star hotel. 2.5 at best. Rooms are fine, but small. Service is awful.” Jul 23, 2008 by
Jennifer from Clearwater, FL
“We expected a nicer hotel from the description and star level. On the positive side the room was very clean, bathroom was nice, beds were very comfortable, and grounds kept clean and manicured. As we were on business we did not have time to check out the pool, restaurants or other facilities. On the negative side when we first arrived we were given a room that already had a guest in it. When we hiked all the way back to the office (in a different building) the attendant in charge at the front desk seemed more intent on explaining to the clerk that had placed us in the room how to operate the computer system that just getting us into another room. They also didn't seem to believe that there was clear evidence that someone was already occupying the room. We never even received an apology. The next room we were placed in was vacant but the ice machine was located on the other side of the wall of the headboards. When we entered the room another guest was getting ice and it was very noisy and we thought we would not be able to sleep well with the racket so we trudged down to the office again. The third room was fine but since we started this process at 9:00 PM after a full day and finally got in the third room by 10 we were a bit worn out. I also noticed that other guests who had room service for breakfast had set their trays outside of their doors at 8:00 AM, when we left for the day and these trays were still there when we returned at 7:30 PM. The furnishings were clean but shop worn and we just expected a bit more.” Jul 18, 2008 by
Eurvin from Atlanta, GA
“Clean facility, very friendly helpful staff, good restaurant service. The only negative is not being able to use all cell phone service on the property.” Jul 16, 2008 by
Claire from Berwyn, PA
“The hotel was nice. I would give it 3 stars; amenities were very nice. Room itself was just decent.” Jul 15, 2008 by
Dave from Chesterfield, VA
“The pool area and gardens were great, but the room, bed and location were less than I expected.” Jul 11, 2008 by
Rebecca from Moundsville, WV
“The hotel has an indoor and outdoor pool, a full service spa, a fitness room, and other amenities. It is not close the beach, but it is an easy drive. The hotel is a little upscale for young children. They do have a small tot playground and the pools, however I do not believe noise would be tolerated. If you order out you will need to meet the delivery driver in the lobby, they do not allow delivery to the rooms.” Jul 10, 2008 by
Joe from Raleigh, NC
“The room is equal in size and quality to an average limited service hotel, though it could use a compact refrigerator. The pool is huge with a slide and there is also a playground onsite. The grounds are very well kept and there are nice areas to take a walk around the lake or sit around outside. There was a wedding or party of some type at the facility while we were there and that is what I see as the best use for the property. On the down side I arrived a little early and was told that our check-in is at 4:00 and we will not have a room for you until then. When I came back to check in at 4:00 I was told that you will have to pay an $11 per night charge for the use of the pool, and fitness center. I could not opt to forego the use of the facilities, so I ended up paying $11 more per night. I was in town to visit family, so the location was fine with me. If you are going to spend time at the ocean, it is about a 20 minute drive. The property feels safe, but the surrounding area leave a little to be desired. This experience left me unhappy with Founders Inn. I am not at all sure that I will use again in the future.” Jul 10, 2008 by
Samuel from Baltimore, MD
“I am disappointed that I was charged an additional $14.00 upon check in, which I was not made aware of prior to purchase. All fees associated with travel should be conspicuous.” Jul 10, 2008 by
Poonam from Baltimore, MD
“The hotel is rustic and beautiful, the pools are really nice, the rooms are spotless, and the beds are amazingly comfortable. Great hotel for the price and location - not too far away from Virginia Beach or Norfolk.” Jul 8, 2008 by
Ida from South Riding, VA
“This hotel was convenient to many locations and sites in the Beaufort area. The staff was mediocre in their service and knowledge. The hotel room was clean, but had a smell. the microwave offered was very dirty and unusable. the small refrigerator was convenient, although not kept well. The bathroom was clean but lacking in toiletries. This hotel was good to spend the night inexpensively, however, the beds did leave the traveler weary.” Jul 2, 2008 by
Sabina from Columbia, MD
“I wouldn't recommend staying at this hotel. The main building (lobby, restaurants and conference area) is very nice, but the other buildings are tired looking. The air conditioning did not work properly in the elevators. The rooms needed an update and the beds were very uncomfortable.” Jun 28, 2008 by
Mark-Brit from Fuquay Varina, NC
“Despite previously noted drawbacks, overall experience at this hotel was terrific. My girlfriend and I went for one night prior to family vacation at the beach and was the perfect setting for relaxation. Would come again, did not experience any hidden fees that other guests spoke about and would recommend to any of my friends or family.” Jun 15, 2008 by
David from Nashville, TN
“Very nice property. Lovely grounds. Rooms were not business friendly. No phone on desk and uncomfortable desk chair. $11 resort fee is bogus.” Jun 8, 2008 by
Barb from Rochester Hills, MI
“A very comfortable, tranquil place to vacation. Beautiful pool looking over lake and garden area. Spa services available.” Jun 2, 2008 by
Bill from Green Bay, WI
“Room was very well set up and furnished, staff were great, pool accommodations were excellent. Quiet even when other guests were plentiful on the weekend.” May 30, 2008 by
Darrel from Richmond, VA
“The furniture in the room was old fashioned and chipped and the bed was way too soft for me or my wife likes.” May 28, 2008 by
Tom from Charlottesville, VA
“Everything was good, though the stay was marred by the fact they told us there was a resort fee of $11 per person upon check-in. Long story short, after arguing again at checkout, they agreed to remove the charge.” May 22, 2008 by
Pamela from Martinsville, VA
“Overall, the hotel looks nice and cozy on the outside, but the rooms and carpet looked dingy. I do understand that the rooms are suppose to be a colonial theme, but they still could have been decorated more nicer. Burch was excellent with a wide variety of food and very reasonable. No trouble with parking, even with a late check-in.” May 18, 2008 by
Susan from Mexico, ME
“Room was not as nice, either beds where horrible.” May 18, 2008 by
Christen from Lewis Center, OH
“When we arrived at this hotel, we were impressed with the main entrance and grounds. However, upon entering our room, there was hair all over the bathroom floor, unswept carpet, strange odor in room, and an extremely worn feeling to the bedding. We were charged $11.55 a day for pool use, which was not made clear to us upon check-in. We were the only family at the hotel that we knew of for 5 days. My daughter and husband cut their feet open on broken glass that was not swept by housekeeping. We had to ask for our carpet to be swept. We had to clean our bathroom ourselves because there was hair all over the floor. Overall, we felt this hotel was equal to a 2-3 star hotel, but not a four star hotel!” May 10, 2008 by
Chris from Charlottesville, VA
“I always enjoy staying at the Founder's Inn, be it business or pleasure due to the superior nature of the property and professional and friendly staff that is always willing to accommodate your needs. They have a very nice fitness center and swimming pool area, along with 2 good restaurants.” Apr 28, 2008 by
rja from phila
“The general manager ruined our vacation stay there - charged us for work done by her maintenance people. The staff was very good - but the manager was the angriest, dishonest, unprofessional, unfair and conniving hotel manager I have ever experienced.” Apr 20, 2008 by
Eric from Alexandria, VA
“Over rated for a 4 star hotel.” Apr 18, 2008 by
Gregory from Wichita Falls, TX
“Unfortunately there is no way to determine if you'll be charged additional fees until you purchase. These fees need to be added to the final price that we purchase and not sprung on us once we arrive at the hotel.” Apr 17, 2008 by
Cleopatra from Stafford, VA
“Overall the facilities at the hotel were spectacular but the bathroom had old tile that looked dirty in some spots. Also, the decor was way too busy. The room had a mini-fridge, but not a microwave, so if you did bring something back, you weren't able to heat it up. Also, the TV did not work with the DVD player we brought along.” Apr 17, 2008 by
Dorella from Woodbridge, VA
“My stay at this hotel was great. However, my biggest complaint was that I was given an additional bill upon my departure. I feel that this should have been charged to my bill up front vs. at the end.” Apr 17, 2008 by
Daniel from Logan, OH
“Beautiful grounds with nice history. Staff was friendly and polite. Sadly they cater more to conferences and conventions and not so much on a true quality resort experience. Screaming children running the halls until 3am is NOT 4 star. Also the dinning tried to be noteworthy but chicken wings, open faced meatloaf sandwiches and crab cake sliders are so far from fine dinning that one need not comment. In short this would be a wonderful place for someone to come in and start a high quality 4 star hotel. As it is this property is simply a parody of one.” Apr 14, 2008 by
Jay from Newport News, VA
“Our room was very clean and beautifully decorated. Unfortunately, the mattress was defective. It sloped to the center. The ice machine next door was loud and heard throughout the night. The heater also was loud when it kicked on. We are not light sleepers. The worst aspect of the stay was the resort fee we were charged. Additionally, they mistakenly charged me twice for the fee. Lastly, I don't consider this hotel in the Pembroke area. I think you should reassess this.” Apr 4, 2008 by
Beulah M. from Locust Grove, VA
“Founder's Inn is nice for people that like "colonial" style buildings. It is a bit of a drive to the beach if you are interested in doing mostly beach activities. We will not stay there again.” Apr 2, 2008 by
Deborah from Reston, VA
“It would have been nicer on a sunny day. The grounds were lovely, but it was raining. I was surprised there was an extra $11 per day resort fee.” Apr 1, 2008 by
Tae M. from Dublin, OH
“Excellent for stay bad for dinner.” Mar 27, 2008 by
Gregg from Bunker Hill, WV
“Nice hotel but the $11.00 a day fee was upsetting.” Mar 27, 2008 by
Timothy from Rockville, MD
“A great place to stay if you desire the smell and decor of your 90-year-old grandmothers house. I know they are going for a "colonial era" decor, but it's outdated. The wallpaper in our room was peeling in several places. The bedside lamp did not work, but was corrected by service personnel. The grout in the bathroom was dirty and cracked in several places. Beds were extremely soft and the linens were nothing special. Pillows were flat and throw pillows had seen better days. Small TV. Could not get wireless access to work, but they did have an Ethernet cable in the room that did work. Workout facility and pool were very nice. We did not eat at the restaurant. Dinnerware from room service left in hallways for most of the night. Walls are paper thin and we could here the TV and conversations going on in the next room and in the hallways. This hotel is not 4 star. Just because you have a spa doesn't mean you're a high class resort. We really wish we would have spent a little more and stayed at the Westin.” Mar 26, 2008 by
Ninad from Piscataway, NJ
“When I checked in, I was told that there would be an additional charge of $11/day. I was shocked and surprised but didn't have a choice as my family was tired from the journey. Our room was not cleaned until 4pm on the 2nd day of our stay and only after we asked for it. The hotel was very poorly staffed to handle the number of guests and getting any service in a timely fashion was a major challenge. I would not stay at this hotel again.” Mar 20, 2008 by
Steve from Brighton, CO
“When checking in the line was out the door and two ladies working the desk were not happy. They wanted to charge me room tax and a resort fee. My six year old daughter quickly noticed that under the edge of the bed there were Goldfish crackers on the floor. which remained there the entire stay even after calling housekeeping. Then when I went to open the window I notice five bed bugs on the curtains, which I let the maid know in the hallway and. Well there, were still there on check out! Other than that it was a really nice, historic looking place. Fast free high-speed internet access, plenty of free parking, close to a major highway. Just need to work on their housekeeping skills and their guest check-in, customer service skills. The customer is always right.” Mar 5, 2008 by
Leon from Chesapeake, VA
“A major disappointment. Had requested (by phone) for four poster bed did not get. Room so small it was difficult for two people to move around, the outside base of the bathtub was really filthy (not dirty) and long walk to parking. Would never stay again.” Mar 5, 2008 by
Steven from Apo, AP
“The beds in the room are some of the softest and most comfortable beds I have every slept on in a hotel. The location is right near a major HWY which makes it convenient to all locations. The spa and fitness facility are amazing. Spending a weekend at this hotel while treating yourself to a 115 minutes massage is a must if you are going to be in the Virginia Beach Area.” Feb 22, 2008 by
Mark from Charlottesville, VA
“Convenient location and upscale amenities make this hotel a great choice for everything from family vacations to business trips. Better flexibility for the spa hours would be great as well as easier access to room.” Feb 18, 2008 by
Steven from Burtonsville, MD
“This was a nice place with a great bed, but I'm not sure I could call this a 4-star hotel (maybe 3.5-star). I expected for 4-stars for my room to be elegant. Instead, it looked like a bedroom in my grandmother's house. The ceiling was even wallpapered. The only thing elegant about this place was the lobby, hallways to the rooms, and door hardware. The rooms were in three separate buildings making you go outside to get to your room if you weren't fortunate enough to get a room in the same building as the front desk. Then, you had to climb a rather inelegant stairway if your room wasn't on the first floor.”
