• The staff (especially the planners and coordinators).

“If you are planning on having an event at this hotel, by all means avoid it. I had to call these people for their own business to set up my event and its always the same answer I got, I was about to call you. Even at the day of my event, from the moment I went to the reception to check in I was forced to wait 2 hours.”

• Very friendly staff.
• Small room, room seemed cold and we could not get the heat up any higher.

“The view was awesome. The staff was very friendly. It was also a quiet hotel with very respectable guests. The only complaint was the size of the room (small)and the bathroom door swung out into the room which made it inconvient when opening the door to the room. Overall it was a good hotel and worth the stay. I would stay there again.”

• It looked more like an upscale hotel, very clean and we will most likely use it every time we visit the area.
• The only thing we didn't like was the attitude of the male employee who was on duty to clean the rooms.

“This is one of the best hotels that I and my family have stayed in. It has been recommended to all of our family and friends when visiting the Portsmouth area. We also considered recommending the hotel as maybe the next place to have our next family reunion, when the DC reunion comes around.”

• When there was no air circulation in the room or air condition, they immediately sent an engineer to assist and correct the problem.
• That the previous maintenance people shut off the circuit breaker in our room behind the grill of the air conditioner and we had to call for maintain.

“Have to pay $10/night for parking but then key didn't work to get into parking garage. Luckily we just drove into the exit gate so not too big a deal. Hotel was very nice and staff friendly. Convenient ferry to downtown Norfolk so could avoid driving and parking there easily.”

“The hotel was beautiful. It had wide grandiose hallways and a tremendous amount of character. I loved the view from my room, overlooking a river. It was conveniently located in old town Portsmouth, close to amenities. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.”

“1) If customer uses a debit card for incidentals, the hotel takes out $50 a day. This amount will not be returned for at least 7 business days. This means in one stays seven days and uses a debit card they are out $350 for at least a week. Someone is making interest somewhere, shady business practices. Hotel staff could not give a good reason for this. 2) Could hear kids jumping on beds, screaming and being generally loud next door. Even after security came to quiet them down, I could hear them. 3) The hotel is by the water and appears nice, but right outside it is sketchy. The area is a ghost town other than a couple hotels.”

• The views of the Elizabeth River and Norfolk were great.
• It was a long trek from parking the car to the room elevator.

“My only difficulty was with the late check in and that may have had more to do with the people before me in line than the hotel staff. I arrived shortly after midnight and waited twenty minutes to get my room. Not the right way to start the stay, but everything else was fine.”

• Plumbing problem not fixes so we had to move to another room.

“This is the best hotel in the area and I would definitely stay there again. Beds are comfortable and toiletries for bathing were really outstanding. My husband wants to but this brand now. I didn't like to pay for parking but it was convenient.”

• Hotel has a beautiful view of the Portsmouth Harbor. Enjoyed riding the Elizabeth River Ferry into Norfolk.
• The breakfast buffet offered a variety of foods, however the cooked foods didn't taste very well, especially at $14 per person.

“I am a former resident of the Historic District of Portsmouth. The hotel was absolutely beautiful. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed all of the amenities i.e. Jacuzzi, pool, fitness center. We had a great view from our room.”

• It is a beautiful hotel.
• They didn't have a room with two beds as I requested for the first night.

“We had a very nice stay. Every one was helpful and kind. The only problem was that even after I called to make sure I had a room with two beds the gave me a room with only one. They helped to get me a room that could accommodate us.”

• Put towel made decorations on the bed. Overlooked the river.
• The pool looked dirty. Restaurant was expensive.

“You have to pay to park in city parking garage. The pool and spa looked dirty and needed maintenance. The restaurant was too expensive to have a drink or bite to eat. This hotel seemed very geared toward business travelers not vacationers. The room overlooked the river, so we were able to watch the ship barges go by. You can take a Ferry over to Norfolk. This is much better than trying to drive. Nice sidewalks by the river in front of the hotel to walk along. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. It was nice to have a crib offered for our daughter at no cost. We had to ask for a refrigerator. It was 20 minutes from Virginia Beach. Overall the stay was ok.”

“Very nice hotel in a good area. Good restaurants and shops within walking distance. Great views of Elizabeth River from the room. Restaurant, room service very slow and disorganized. Menus did not reflect what was available and current prices. Great hotel for lodging, but use local restaurants.”

“Hotel is nicely decorated and located in a convenient waterfront location along the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth. Water taxi stop nearby was great to go to Norfolk waterfront where much to do for the family. Exercise room was well equipped for the space being adjacent to the pool was nice. Staff all was wonderful, helpful and made us feel quite welcome!”

“This is a beautiful property with first rate service. The room was nearly spotless and very comfortable. This is the fourth time we have stayed there and we intend to return many times.”

“I have stayed at this hotel many times in the past. This is the first time when I checked in to my room that the bathroom was not completely clean. The floor and the bathtub had hair all over them. Also, the A/C unit did not work properly. The room stayed warm.”

“I took my mom to Portsmouth for the weekend and planned a host of activities, but the hotel was so nice that we ended up relaxing in the pool and dining either with room service or their restaurant. It was great! We are going back in 6 weeks.”

• Beautiful view of port and shops. Quiet and even heat/cool system.
• Did not have refrigerator in unit. Parking and Internet additional and expensive.

“Is located in quaint and historic Olde Towne and overlooks port. Convenient to paddle boat ferry that takes you across river to shopping and dining in Norfolk. Can walk to restaurants, shops, and museums in Portsmouth Olde Towne. Elegant decor, clean and spacious rooms and comfortable beds and bedding. It would be nice if Internet were free and not over $10.00 additional per day, if parking were within the hotel and not additional and if there was a small refrigerator in rooms for beverages.”

“A wonderful hotel with comfortable beds and beautiful surroundings. Within walking distance of "Old Towne" (beautiful historic homes) and excellent restaurants. The staff was friendly and accommodating. I will visit again!”

• The staff - extraordinarily helpful and nice.
• $10 parking a day seems excessive for the area.

“Great hotel, great location and very comfortable room. Only issue that I had was working in the business center. The system for the computers was such that I could only do one task at a time. Example, I had to download something from my remote email and then copy it into word. I couldn't do it - I could download, but then had to close down email and couldn't get to the desk top to retrieve the file so had no way of making the two programs work together.”

• Wonderful (but hard to get to) location on the water and comfortably plush.
• OMG! The beautiful room (corner room on top floor) was ruined by weird noises throughout the night. We think it was due to howling winds.

“Elegant plushness in this upscale waterfront hotel. The decor is upscale and historic without being stuffy. Off the lobby was a warm comfy sitting area with a library and fireplace.”

• Guests have to walk from the parking lot to the hotel, though it is not a long walk, during the winter you can get a chill at a minimum.

• The hotel staff is courteous, very professional and helpful.
• Getting there is a bit tricky. It's easy to miss exit 7 off Route 264 if you are in the wrong lane.

“My overall experience in this hotel has been very good. I wished I had more time to stay longer at the Renaissance. I would definitely stay there during my trip to Norfolk.”

• Too far from the front door to the front desk.

“Overall, is good but our room was a bit damp when we got there. It took a night of cool air conditioning to "dry" things up a bit. Also, the drain in the tub is so slow that I have to wash my feet after I got out of the shower.”
