“The bell staff is extraordinary - the backbone of the reputation of the hotel. Check in staff is diffident - not overly welcoming, but the bell staff covers for that. The restaurant in this hotel is overpriced and the food is average. The restaurant was most often empty. Hotel needs to evaluate.” Sep 7, 2008 by
P from Boston, MA
“Overall, this hotel was excellent. The only problem was that the service wasn't the best. I asked for a bottle opener and had to wait almost 2 hours but finally ended up going downstairs myself to get it from the restaurant. Other than that, the hotel was beautiful and an excellent choice.” Aug 30, 2008 by
Mark from Ellsworth, ME
“Would I stay at the J.W. Marriott again? Absolutely. The staffers are way above average in courtesy and helpfulness. This was my first stay there, and I understand that the hotel has recently been totally remodeled. Very nice job! My only complaint is with the restaurant. We ate there twice, and had bad experiences both times. However, I will hasten to add that when we pointed out the problems, the staff swiftly and apologetically attempted to correct them. I do think, though, that there are some serious quality control issues in their kitchen which need to be addressed immediately. But if you can plan to eat all of your meals somewhere off premises (and that's not too hard), I would heartily recommend this hotel.” Aug 25, 2008 by
Jean from Germantown, MD
“The Marriott was very nice. The accessible room we stayed in was very well appointed and comfortable. Gracious staff. Convenient location to museums.” Aug 23, 2008 by
Kurt from Bonaire, GA
“I love the hotel, it is very luxurious.” Aug 16, 2008 by
John M. from Jacksonville, FL
“We will definitely stay at this hotel again. We really liked the location.” Aug 16, 2008 by
Mary A. from Waterford, MI
“This hotel was recently renovated and it shows. Everything was clean and updated. In fact, when we were staying there we remarked how nice and large the LG TV was in our room. The next morning we woke up to find a box next to every door in the hallway even though the TV in our room was only 2 years old; they were updating again and putting brand new larger TVs in the room. The view from our bedroom window was the Washington Monument. The hotel is within walking distance of the Smithsonian Museums, the White House, the Capitol Building and just about all of the memorials (Lincoln, WWII, Korean, Vietnam). We found a great place (reasonably priced) for a quick breakfast or lunch, just around the corner (Corner Bakery). The staff; I could go on for hours about how well the staff treated us. We were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary on the day we arrived. Upon our return to our room, from site-seeing we were greeted with an imported bottle of wine and 6 chocolate covered cherries. This made our evening very special and was a wonderful ending to a fantastic day of touring. The elevators are very different/fun/efficient, instead of pushing the floor button after getting inside, you push the floor button on the outside and are directed to either door B, C, D, E or F. This elevator takes you directly to your floor without stopping at any other floors efficiently. Wonderful hotel, fantastic staff, great location!” Aug 14, 2008 by
Mary Ann from Waterford, Michigan
“We were treated like royalty from the moment we drove up. Everyone from the parking attendant, to the bellman, to the front desk was very friendly and accommodating. Our room had a wonderful view of the Washington Monument. The front desk supervisor surprised us with a card congratulating us on our 35th wedding anniversary, along with an imported bottle of wine and 6 chocolate covered strawberries, which made our first evening at the hotel very special. The king size bed was very comfortable and the room was spotless. Location. As stated earlier the Washington Monument was visible right outside of our window ~ that's because it was only a couple blocks away, along with the White House, all of the Smithsonian Museums and many of the memorials (WWII, Vietnam, Korean, Lincoln, etc) The elevator was fun and efficient ~ you pushed the floor number on the outer wall and it would direct you to the elevator door B, C, D, E or F that would take you directly to your floor without stopping on the way. Just around the corner from the hotel is the Corner Bakery ~ a nice place for a quick breakfast and quite reasonably priced. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Washington DC as a tourist or for business.” Aug 14, 2008 by
Rosemarie from Newtown Square, PA
“The hotel was beautiful and modern, lots of friendly helpful staff. The restaurant and cocktail lounge were really nice and the location on Pennsylvania avenue was so great for walking to so many of the attractions. We will definitely go back again. Only complaint - our room was on the small side and had no refrigerator which we really needed.” Aug 8, 2008 by
Darlene from Upland, IN
“The Marriott exceeded our needs and the staff was overboard in taking care of us. My father was in a wheel-chair and the room was excellent for him. They provided us with connecting suites so we could watch over my parents with ease. The hotel supplied all our additional requests with regard to a bedside commode for my father and a separate refrigerator for our cold beverages, etc. They were all amazing and we would have no problem recommending them for anyone in any kind of circumstance. Check in and check out was simple. They even allowed us an early arrival and a late departure at no extra charge. The rooms were beautiful and very clean, beds were extremely comfortable and our experience with any of the staff was incredibly wonderful! They deserve as many stars as they can get!” Aug 8, 2008 by
Joe from Endwell, NY
“The Marriott Penn Ave is a first rate hotel, located centrally in downtown DC. The easy/quick access to the prime DC sites, multiple local restaurants, and easy access to the Metro make it very convenient. Valet parking rates are high and in the future I would park separately and walk short distance to hotel.” Jul 25, 2008 by
Anthony from Lake St. Louis, MO
“Very friendly and helpful staff, from the door person to the front desk everyone was very nice and made the stay very pleasant. Good location for Fenway. The hotel was safe, clean and quite.” Jul 11, 2008 by
Alexa from Greenville, SC
“Our stay at the hotel was very pleasant. We enjoyed the pool, hot tub, fitness room and sauna. It's a good place for travelers who are looking for a great hotel convenient to the Mall. Short walk to the White House and Metro stop. Overall it was a great hotel and we would definitely return.” Jul 10, 2008 by
Stephanie from Fontana, CA
“I had a wonderful experience at this hotel. The staff was very polite, accommodating and knowledgeable. Because of problems with our flight we needed to stay an extra night for a few hours. The staff was so understanding that they gave us a room for about 60% off the rate. Everyone from the manager, valet, front desk, bellman, concierge and even security made me feel welcomed. I was very impressed.” Jun 4, 2008 by
Rmsd from San Diego, CA
“The valet at the lobby was kind enough to point that the parking spot on the street outside was free versus having to pay for parking. Now thats customer service!” May 28, 2008 by
Asantewa from Seattle, WA
“This hotel is excellent! The location, the furnishings both in lobby and rooms, the staff, and the new elevator system were all great!” May 25, 2008 by
Jason from Mesa, AZ
“Overall the experience was good. Hotel staff was attentive, and courteous. Location was excellent for near by attractions. Easily within walking distance of the national mall.” May 23, 2008 by
Glenn from West Chester, PA
“A great location and well maintained hotel. Friendly staff with good service.” May 21, 2008 by
Jon from Piscataway, NJ
“Overall good hotel, great location. I would stay at again, however I am not sure if the price was right. Many lower quality (in stars) hotels offer more for less money. There was an extra charge for wireless internet, and no continental breakfast. The rooms were nice and everything was clean. The staff was very helpful.” May 15, 2008 by
Martha from Burleson, TX
“After the first wrong steer, the concierge gave me on directions. I was hesitant to go to this place but decided to try it. I went to the place, he recommended against my better judgement (and the backhand insult), thinking surely it was good food, not just quantity as I specifically mentioned, crab cakes, and shrimp, something like Hougate's, and it was a special night and not because it did have a large buffet. It did have a buffet of poor quality food. I hated that I paid an arm and a leg for that when DC. Maryland and surrounding vicinity have several good seafood places. That was the second time he gave wrong advice. If it wasn't for him, I would have given a 10+ rating for the performance of hotel staff, as the rest were excellent from check-in, to bellman, maids - all leap tall buildings with a single bound in my opinion. The doorman steered us to Zola's and Georgia Brown. And they were great places. They know the town better than the supposed expert. Anytime (which was 3 total), we asked the concierge for help. It was if we were bothering him, and he looked down his nose at us. This was not the sign of a professional, or what I remembered the last time I was at this hotel.” May 7, 2008 by
John from Winnebago, IL
“The location was perfect for site seeing in Washington, DC. We could walk to everything that we wanted to visit. We will return to this hotel next year.” May 6, 2008 by
Lee from Davidson, OK
“Great location, friendly staff, a good place to take the family or a romantic couples weekend.” May 5, 2008 by
Mark from Covina, CA
“If you are looking for a high-end hotel in the heart of D.C. this is it. Five minute walk to the White House and not much further to other major sites. Three blocks to the Metro. Hotel service is excellent as are the amenities and cleanliness. The PERFECT place to stay in D.C.” Apr 28, 2008 by
Sandra from Dixmont, ME
“This hotel could not have been more conveniently located to the National Mall. Great when you are traveling with three children. The staff was very helpful, the rooms were comfortable. The pool was a decent size pool, versus the little pools they usually put in hotels.” Apr 17, 2008 by
Emily from Virginia Beach, VA
“We had a nice stay and definitely got our money's worth. The room was nice and spacious, even if the bathroom was a little small. The linens and bedding were very soft and comfortable. As for location, it doesn't get much better. We had a view of the Washington Monument from our room and were just a few blocks from the White House. We have stayed here several times and are never disappointed.” Apr 14, 2008 by
Allen from Lewiston, ID
“We just needed a room for the night and did not spend much time checking out the motel, but what we did see was very nice. It was more suited for a business type clientele and not a family looking for a fun getaway. It is however located close to a lot of DC historic attractions.” Apr 8, 2008 by
Deena from Peachtree City, GA
“The hotel was what I had hoped for. There was only one complaint, not the hotels fault. At 5 am Saturday morning, the fire alarm went off and an announcement rang through the rooms that a fire had been spotted. Of course we all went down the stairs and as soon as we walked out of the building, everyone was walking back into the hotel. When asked what happened, the bellhop said someone lit a cigarette. Wow, what a sensitive fire alarm system. Needless to say whoever lit that cigarette deserved a beating.” Apr 7, 2008 by
Heather from Saratoga Springs, NY
“Great place to stay and see the sights. Rooms were comfortable and clean. Safe location, especially if you are a female traveling alone. Easy access to Metro and cool shops, coffee places, bars and restaurants close by.” Apr 2, 2008 by
Dave from Landenberg, PA
“Somewhat inconvenient to get to Metro system (although I didn't really use it much).” Apr 2, 2008 by
Anita from Sutherland, VA
“My family came up to Washington to enjoy the Easter Weekend and we like to stay in the 4 and 5 star hotels. We like the quality better of the higher rated hotels. This hotel is one we will definitely visit again. The staff was warm and friendly. The decor of the hotel was beautiful. The View out our window of the Washington Monument was gorgeous. Falling asleep with that view was historical to our family. The beds made you feel as if you were totally relaxed and weightless. If you are planning a trip to Washington D.C. this is the hotel you want to stay in.” Mar 31, 2008 by
Fawaz from Jamestown, NC
“Location, 1.5 blocks away from the White House. Perfect for a little family visit to see the sights of DC.” Mar 31, 2008 by
James from Millsboro, DE
“Excellent hotel, friendly helpful staff, short walks to the National Mall, White House and Metro Stations. Very comfortable room and had a great view.” Mar 28, 2008 by
Kristen from Dallas, TX
“Close to museums, not many food options close by on the weekend because it is an office area.” Mar 28, 2008 by
Erin from Fredericksburg, VA
“Overall the hotel was very nice. It was a great location. For a four star hotel it did lack in some areas, my husband called for his car (they tell you to call 15 in advance) and ended up waiting almost an hour, making him late for a work function. But the hotel was nice, just expected a touch more from a four star hotel, but I'm sure we'd stay there again for the right price.” Mar 28, 2008 by
Joe from Chester, VA
“Professional Staff, Room was good size, I was very comfortable there.” Mar 27, 2008 by
Jean from Rockaway, NJ
“I have always liked and trusted the Marriott chain. This was a very nice hotel. The only challenge was the new elevator system. You push your floor from the outside area and then must get in the cab to which you're directed. You would not be able to change your mind, as there are no floor buttons inside the elevator.” Mar 9, 2008 by
Suzanne from Indianapolis, IN
“Beautiful lobby. Very courteous staff. Great elevator system, very secure. We loved the room. I don't know why they didn't have wireless internet.” Mar 3, 2008 by
Yomi from Oak Brook, IL
“Very nice.” Mar 2, 2008 by
Bruce from Annapolis, MD
“The JEW Marriott has always been a favorite of mine since it was built in the 80's. I have not stayed here for more than 12 years because I now live in the area. It has recently completed a complete face lift and it is beautiful. However, getting to the "Shops" is now a real pain because of so many inane so-called security measures. That was difficult” Feb 25, 2008 by
Gary from Birmingham, AL
“I will probably go back to the JW Marriott when I return to DC. Very nice hotel.” Feb 24, 2008 by
Russ from Hayward, CA
“Pretty simple. It's a nice place to stay. A classic look with the modern amenities you'd hope for in a 4-star hotel.” Feb 5, 2008 by
David from West Palm Beach, FL
“It is a beautiful hotel, but I feel like a cog in a big chain. I had hoped for a wonderful late room service meal, but instead received what seemed like thawed pre frozen soup, appetizer and dessert with poor service and no attempt to even see if my order was complete, which is was not!” Jan 21, 2008 by
Dawn from Pbg, FL
“Hotel was similar to a Renaissance Grand Hotel in look and feel. Indoor heated pool and large Jacuzzi are always great features; as well as workout facility. Hotel also has it's own Starbucks located inside, a gift shop, and a restaurant. Tons of staff on hand to help with everything from luggage to dinner plans.” Dec 17, 2007 by
Jenn D. from Boulder, CO
“As a business traveler, internet access is my lifeline and I spent 4 hours on the phone and with hotel engineers trying to get it up to speed and working. This crippled my five day business trip to dc I would have paid all the money in the world for internet and heat in my room. The discount wasn't worth it.” Dec 15, 2007 by
Greg from Lakewood Ranch, FL
“Great business hotel.” Dec 11, 2007 by
Chung-Chiun from Cleveland Hts, OH
“The rooms in the hotel are comfortable. The service is good and the location is very desirable.” Dec 7, 2007 by
Philip from Chesterbrook, PA
“Beautiful location and facility. Rooms are super nice.” Dec 6, 2007 by
George from Mount Laurel, NJ
“This hotel is a gorgeous hotel in a great location within walking distance of the white house and the Smithsonian Mall.” Dec 6, 2007 by
Dori from Chicago, IL
“The rooms were nicely appointed with all the amenities. The staffs were super friendly. Loved the kiosk in the lobby for printing boarding passes! New elevator system was a bit odd, and the signs explaining how to use it could be clearer. Perfect location for my meetings in DC. Only real drawback is many of the restaurants and shops in the area close at night, so opportunities to explore the neighborhood were limited.” Dec 5, 2007 by
Dan from Clifton, VA
“We loved the hotel, the location, the room (the view)! Did not expect to have the phenomenal view we had from our 14th-floor window. Looking well over the rooftops of buildings across Pennsylvania avenue, with the Washington monument appearing as if it was right outside our window! The only drawback (and it was a major one) was the valet parking situation. There's only one, very cramped driveway leading to the front doors, so you spend a fair amount of time awaiting your turn to get to the valet to unload your car. This, however, paled in comparison to our 60-minute (no joke!) Ordeal in waiting for our car to be brought to us by the severely understaffed valet parking crew (valiant though they were, it was a hotel management problem; not that of the valet parking staff). You couldn't even call ahead to get your car brought around as the valet staff was so overwhelmed they weren't even answering the phone! Awesome hotel, very, very lame valet parking for $30 a night (the only parking offered by the hotel). If you can park in a nearby self-service public garage, you're much, much better off! A sour end to what would otherwise have been an awesome stay! Wake up, Marriott Pennsylvania avenue!” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.
