“Not a bad place overall, the bathroom was in need of a serious makeover. It was dirty unacceptable for a 4 star rating. Everything else was decent, location good. I would probably not recommend the Melrose Hotel again.” Apr 10, 2008 by
Jeff from Springfield, VA
“Great place (staff, room size, location, TV) do not get me wrong, but do not leave your phone charger or you will never see it again. I even called housekeeping and they had it on Sunday. But lost it by Wednesday.” Apr 9, 2008 by
Robert from Scottsville, VA
“Close proximity to Georgetown while not immersed in Georgetown 'foot-traffic' is a big plus. You can take or leave it with little effort. Bar and Dining area are offset from entry-way, so the path to the rooms is unencumbered. Rooms are clean and well laid out with functional areas (bed, TV, office and clothing closet) properly separated. Bathroom was a positive surprise, with everything spotless and lots of room.” Apr 5, 2008 by
Lynn from Chicago, IL
“Fine location. Big room. No soap. Broken bed side lamp. Loud air handling system. Second class accommodations.” Mar 28, 2008 by
Lisa from Thaxton, VA
“This hotel was well run. The front desk employees were friendly and helpful. We liked being able to catch the Metro close by to visit several area attractions. It was clean, up-to-date and easy to find.” Mar 20, 2008 by
Alex from Great Mills, MD
“Alright hotel, definitely not a 4 star hotel though. The furniture, appliances, and the amount of space was very nice. However, the really nice plasma screen TV could not be enjoyed because they only offered basic (I mean basic) cable. The air conditioner did not work. Luckily, the room temperature didnt go above 75 with the windows closed. The bathroom was small and did not offer a separate bath/shower in comparison to the Westin Grand. I almost forgot, the biggest disappointment was that they charge $10.00/day to utilize their wireless internet, who does that these days? On the other hand, the staff was very courteous and accommodating. The location was very nice too.” Mar 19, 2008 by
Randy from Doylestown, PA
“Great location, a bit less posh than we had hoped for the star rating. Friendly and cooperative staff, but not as knowledgeable about the DC sights as we expected.” Mar 19, 2008 by
Brock from Pocatello, ID
“Room quality was poor. Some of the furniture was either wobbly, broken, or just in bad shape. The location of the hotel did not seem that great either. There were not a whole lot of dining choices close to the hotel. The plus of the hotel is that there was a metro station just a block away so that you get get around town pretty well.” Mar 19, 2008 by
Tammi S. from Gaston, NC
“The hotel staff was friendly and did a great job welcoming our kids on their first big trip to DC.” Jan 12, 2008 by
Carlos from Los Angeles, CA
“When I arrived into hotel I had a warm friendly welcome. I was exhausted from the commute and felt relieved after checking in. Gym could be better and the food is terrible. I get in late and get hungry. Not many places were open around hotel for food. I ordered room service and was VERY disappointed. I asked what was best on late night menu and was recommended a Turkey Club. It was the worst club ever, stale bread. I was shocked on how someone could go wrong with a club. Overall, I would not stay there again, unless I had to. There are a lot of good places to eat a few blocks from hotel. Church next door. That's also good. lol” Jan 7, 2008 by
Aaron F. from Ocean Pines, MD
“The hotel was nice at first appearance. The staff was also extremely helpful and friendly. However for a 4-star hotel I was a little disappointed with the condition of the hotel. The room was nice but the bathroom dated and the ceiling was under repair. This room should have not been open for reservation until these repairs were completed. We enjoyed the Melrose but would have found our stay even more enjoyable if the room were complete.” Jan 4, 2008 by
Sonja from Stafford, VA
“NA.” Jan 4, 2008 by
Myrna from Woodbridge, VA
“Excellent value. Perfect location for evening at the Kennedy Center.” Jan 4, 2008 by
Rich from Charleston, SC
“Enjoyed our stay. Staff was helpful and friendly. It is nice, but not quite 4 star quality in comparison to other 4 stars I've stayed in the DC area. .” Jan 4, 2008 by
Meggen A. from Austin, TX
“The Melrose is in the perfect location for club-hopping and shopping in Georgetown or sightseeing around DC. The Foggy Bottom metro station is an easy walk from the hotel. The lobby and rooms were very clean and well-kept. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The beds were wonderful--even better than sleeping at home! The restaurant's a la carte breakfast was good, but pricey. We were overall very impressed!” Jan 4, 2008 by
Andrew from Holly Springs, NC
“Very clean, strong business feel. I found a garage nearby to park and left it there for my four night stay. Other than that, I have no complaints, the room was large, everything was clean, and the location is GREAT!” Jan 2, 2008 by
Kenneth from Williamsburg, VA
“The hotel is centrally located in the historic foggy bottom section of dc. It is 5 minutes from the metro stop and a 10 minute walk to the Kennedy Center.” Dec 31, 2007 by
Sam from New York, NY
“This was probably in past years once a luxury hotel. It has seen better days. The room though clean and well equipped seemed a bit worn---the wallpaper seemed old; the bathroom lighting was awful, and the television set was poor. Nevertheless, the staff was courteous and the location is quite excellent. There's a Trader's Joe nearby and the Metro station is close by.” Dec 31, 2007 by
Keith from Seaford, NY
“Excellent for a business traveler or couple spending the night in D.C. The room was large, but the view was less than desirable. Fridge was filled to capacity with bar items and made it difficult to store any other food inside. The beds were very comfortable, and clean.” Dec 26, 2007 by
Beth from Midlothian, VA
“I valet parked my car. I did not realize until I left the hotel and had arrived home that damage had occurred to my SUV. It was not obvious as the damage is above the rear window on a piece of trim that encloses a brake light. I am very disappointed that no one from the hotel disclosed the damage to me. The parking was $38.” Dec 19, 2007 by
Christopher from Cleveland, OH
“The hotel was great. The staff was very helpful. If I ever go back to DC I will stay at the Melrose.” Dec 17, 2007 by
Donna from Orinda, CA
“Great hotel for business travel. Walking distance to GWU, Kennedy Center, State Dept., National Academy of Sciences and Georgetown restaurants. With students nearby, pedestrians on the street late (felt safe on foot).” Dec 17, 2007 by
Jason from New York, NY
“This is a very good, clean, 3 star hotels with an above average location near the heart of Georgetown. Downsides are expensive parking (~$38/night much more than even NYC) and outdated bathrooms and hotel rooms.” Dec 13, 2007 by
Precious R. from Springfield, VA
“Not bad for the price. Looks really nice upon first glance, a little cracks and chips here and there, but appears well worn. Room was uncomfortably hot, but not unbearable.” Dec 6, 2007 by
Heidi from Statesboro, GA
“Located close to the metro, downtown, GWU Medical Center, the Melrose was a perfect compromise for me as a place to stay between a conference in the Woodley Park area and sightseeing with my 10-year-old. The hotel is beautiful, clean, well-appointed, and the staff is wonderful. I highly recommend the Melrose to anyone, and look forward to staying there again the next time I am in DC.” Dec 6, 2007 by
Sue from Lafayette, IL
“The Melrose Hotel was in a good location- central to most of Washington DC's tourist attractions. It was a nice walk to Georgetown and Dupont Circle, and a short walk to the metro stop. We were upgraded to a suite, which was spacious and comfortable. The living room contained a TV, couch, two chairs, and an eating area, complete with wine glasses and a corkscrew. (A TV was also in the bedroom.) The bathroom was clean with a large sink and mirror, and a nice array of bath products were provided (the brand was Rusk, which had a wonderful fragrance but was made in China). The one meal eaten at the restaurant was breakfast, which was good but expensive for a basic buffet. Staffs were reserved but very accommodating.” Dec 6, 2007 by
Robert from Wilmington, DE
“Large room nice decor great location.” Nov 29, 2007 by
Scarlet from Catlett, VA
“When you walk through the door, the word "elegant" comes to mind. The gentleman at the front desk was extremely nice and very accommodating, upgraded me to a beautiful suite as a "little something for my birthday" and I didn't ask; he just did it as a nice gesture! Then, you meet the valet guy. But, after that, we went to our suite and were just delighted. A great bedroom, an office, and a living area with a nice dining room table. Very clean, very attractive. I would say the only thing they might want to upgrade would be the pillows, hard and flat. We did not use the restaurant or room service, so I can not comment on that. But, the short walk to Georgetown was absolutely a huge plus; great location! Overall, wonderful experience.” Nov 7, 2007 by
Rj from W. Lebanon, NH
“This is definitely not a 4 star hotel. The room was filthy: there was urine on the toilet seat, the carpets were stained, the telephones were visibly dirty, and the walls were full of scuff marks. When I complained about the bathroom, housekeeping sent someone to my room to "clean up." when I checked later, I saw that they had only placed a bath mat on the floor and had sprayed disinfectant in the air the urine was still on the toilet seat.” Oct 11, 2007 by
Betsy from Magnolia, NJ
“Good location in a good neighborhood, walking distance to many upscale eateries. Do not eat in hotel bar or landmark restaurant, bad service and mediocre food.” Oct 10, 2007 by
Michael from Highland Park, IL
“Outstanding hotel. Definitely a 4plus star rating; great location, spacious and nicely appointed rooms, very clean and well-maintained, nice lobby and common areas, very comfortable bed.” Oct 10, 2007 by
Larry from Whitehouse Station, NJ
“The $38/day for parking is way too much. This should be considered in the price, not something extra.” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Sep 24, 2007 by
Maggie from Tucson, AZ
“While it was a very nice hotel, it definitely seemed more like a three star than a four-star. The towels were so thin they were almost transparent - definitely not resort-quality. We still very much liked our stay at this hotel though. Staff was very polite. Received USA Today outside out door in the morning.” Sep 23, 2007 by
Edwin from Jamaica, NY
“Would not stay again.” Sep 20, 2007 by
Tim from Jersey City, NJ
“Checked in late and was stuck with a first floor room right next to a major traffic road. It was entirely too noisy to sleep until very late at night. The room was smoking and they did not have a non-smoking room for me. As a non-smoker, I've stayed in smoking rooms before without much bother but it was way too smoky in the room for me. It was a weekend night and my neighbors were all clearly young kids partying in the hotel. Would never return.” Sep 19, 2007 by
Ellyn from East Meadow, NY
“The hotel staff was very friendly and remembered us by name. That could have been because the parking lot damaged my car and a package that was sent by FedEx could not be found. We requested fresh towels and never received them.” Sep 18, 2007 by
Jon from Brooklyn, NY
“They have large rooms and decent cable selection, and a great location near metro and Georgetown-- but no business traveler can function these days without free Wi-Fi.” Sep 17, 2007 by
Stephen W. from Cincinnati, OH
“Nice size room, excellent location, very small bathroom, when I complained about something on sheets to front desk got message from cleaning manager about their "green" policy. This is a nice 3 star hotel that could be 4-star if updated.” Sep 9, 2007 by
Ken from Norfolk, VA
“A nice hotel but little on the generic side of nice. Nothing unique or moving about the hotel. It did have very large rooms which made it comfortable for us.” Sep 7, 2007 by
Veronica from Randolph, NJ
“I'm completely neutral about this Hotel. The mattresses felt old with no support. The ice machine was broken. The gym had only bicycle and walking, no weights, and in a very small room. We never tried the restaurants but looked nice, fancy and $$$. The location was very good, near Georgetown (CVS, banks and "La Madeleine" restaurant) and Metro. Anyway, next time we would reserve near The Capitol or White House.” Sep 5, 2007 by
Rhoda from Seattle, WA
“Conveniently located in Foggy Bottom this is a classic hotel.” Aug 30, 2007 by
Sara from Concord, MA
“Conveniently located between George Washington U. and Georgetown U. Rooms are well decorated. The high cost of the valet service could pay for many a cab ride around DC.” Aug 30, 2007 by
Katie from Berkley, MI
“This hotel is like a movie set - pure deception.” Aug 25, 2007 by
Harry from Princeton Junction, NJ
“Very nice atmosphere. Old world elegance. Centrally located.” Aug 24, 2007 by
Harold from San Jose, CA
“This hotel does not seem like a 4 star to me. The only reason I can think that it is would be because of its location next to downtown, yet not right in the middle of downtown. But the hotel itself, the commodities, the look of the room inside (outdated) suggest to me more like a 2.5 star. The ice maker never worked, although someone would bring some to our room whenever we called. There was a charge for internet (it has to be a must these days for a hotel to have free wireless, especially if it is a 4 star). There were some issues with getting our check out time correct. However, the staff was very friendly. Overall, we enjoyed our experience.” Aug 21, 2007 by
Susanne from Williamsburg, VA
“Great hotel - very clean and very nice. It was close to Georgetown with lots of things in walking distance. Overall, a great experience.” Aug 15, 2007 by
Holly from Portland, OR
“The room and the location were great, but there were some negatives. We had to block traffic and wait a long time to get our car valet parked to enter the hotel (Parking was very expensive, but I'd expect that in a major city). We had to pay for wireless internet, and then would have had to pay another fee for another computer, but we decided to use just one. We were in a big hurry in the morning, and were glad to see a nice continental breakfast, so we grabbed some fruit, coffee and muffins on the run, only to find out that we'd just purchased two $18 buffet breakfasts. Might stay here again, but I'd be careful about extra charges.” Aug 3, 2007 by
Joanne from Shoreview, MN
“If you have lots of money to spend, this is the place to be.” Jul 20, 2007 by
James from Toledo, OH
“Wonderful hotel, everything was working well there and I would recommend it to everybody I know. In fact, I already have.” Jul 12, 2007 by
Shephali R. from Tampa, FL
“Room was dirty when we checked in (used glasses and towels in bath area), bathtub was chipped, carpets looked dingy. Bed was not as comfortable as I expected it to be. Expected much better when requesting a 4-star hotel.” Hotel Representatives:
