• The grounds were beautifully manicured.
• The prices at the bar were rather high.

• Awful service.

“Hotel was stately in its appearance and immaculately maintained. Service, however, was awful. Staff did not respond to requests for extra towels and toiletries once and on our last night os stay, the room was not cleaned and we were asked to move to a new one. Service desk and resort manager were professional and sympathetic and offered us a 2-night free stay for later.”

• This hotel is suitably located in the woods and near serene atmosphere. It reminds me of colonial era of the Virginia plantations.
• It was great. I don't have anything negative about this hotel.

• Quiet.

“Very nice hotel, but not convenient to Richmond. It was 15 miles from downtown and at least 10 from anything else. The restaurant and bar were very nice though. The room was very comfortable!”

• Beautiful lobby and rooms. Liked having the underground tunnels between buildings.
• Breakfast
  at 7AM, there
  at 7AM, very little food. Either not set up or not ready yet. Ate somewhere else.

“We checked in late and had to leave early so we didn't really get to make use of the amenities. The lobby was beautiful and the rooms were nice. There was a bit of a wait to get on an elevator to the rooms because there were several groups checking in at once so we walked up. There was a large group of girls' soccer team members and the girls were running up and down the halls making a lot of noise, but that's the parents' fault, certainly not the hotels' fault.”

• Nice place, reasonably cost, and close to family.
• Too far to go to smoke and a long way to walk to get any where from room.

“The room was very nice (bathroom could have used a little work). The staff was very courteous and prompt. I will stay there again. Hopefully a little closer to ground level next time.”

• Great layout, nice guest rooms, friendly pub and restaurant.
• It is in an odd location, out of the way a bit, off the highway.

“This is much more a resort and conference center (as the name implies), rather than a hotel, however it suited my business purposes very nicely, and was a short fourteen mile drive to the airport, and close to the city and business locations. Very nice set up for business travelers.”

• I little off the beaten path. Not too bad though.

• Bad reception on the TV.

“Clean hotel with some nice touches (especially toiletries). Location is not really convenient to downtown Richmond, and can be hard to find. My main complain would be the TV in our room. The reception was terrible. Luckily we were only staying one night, so I could deal, but I would not have been happy if I was staying for more than a night. Staff was helpful and accommodating.”

• The views and the grounds of the hotel were gorgeous.
• For a four star hotel, our queen room was tiny, and no more luxurious than a holiday inn.

“The hotel is pretty, and the furnishings are nice, but nothing out of this world. I expect a lot more for a 4 star hotel. Breakfast was adequate, dinner fairly tasty, but nothing that blew my mind. All in all, it was acceptable, but didn't blow me away.”

• Work out facility was in a separate building which made it inconvenient.

“It's basically a resort at a moderate hotel price. There is a nice golf course located on the property which is public. The rooms are very comfortable and the bathrooms are clean and spacious -- exactly what's needed!”

• The beds were so soft and comfortable and staff was exceptionally helpful, finding and mailing a lost ring to us.
• Smoking allowed in restaurant with apparently insufficient ventilation. Made my 10 year old ill.

“Beautifully situated in out-of-the-way country setting with interesting historical significance. Reminds one of being on a college campus. Spacious rooms with exceptionally comfortable beds.”

• They had a coffeemaker in the room and nice robes.
• The "motel" feels of the parking lot.

“I guess I didn't know what to expect. The room was lovely, and the lobby nice but the way you had to drive over to another building to your room and park in the back was very much a "motel" feel and did not feel very secure as there was no lobby or hotel staff in the building housing the guest rooms. Then I had to drive back to the lobby building to check out. Very inconvenient that in-room checkout was nonfunctional. The parking lot needs better lighting too. I guess it would be fine for a convention or conference but not for a leisure traveler.”

• It was very clean and very nice.
• I couldn't get two beds even though I had 3 people total.

“When I attempted to secure my reservation I said there were 3 adults. I wanted 2 beds but was told that was not available so I got a roll away. When I arrived and asked about the roll away, they said there weren't any available but then there was one in the room. The place was really clean and nice.”

• The grounds were beautiful a little confusing on where rooms are, separate buildings.
• The food was not that great, there was an ant on my room service tray, cream curdled in coffee.

• In the barbs / no stores within walking distance.

“Business meetings appear to be the main focus of this hotel. Beautiful grounds and common areas. Large clean rooms. Very nice furniture and bedding. One of the nicest bathrooms I have ever seen. well above average.”

• Comfortable beds, beautiful setting. Non smoking rooms were really non smoking.
• Elevators and entrances too far from parking.

• The desk clerks went out of their way to be helpful, giving us great directions for anywhere we wanted.
• It seemed to be designed just for golfers, not much else to do in the area.

“Did not appear to have any facilities for anyone other than golfers. Nothing for children to do either alone or with adult supervision. The staff, while courteous, was also able to convey a certain feeling of snobbishness.”

• It was lovely!
• The power went out in the morning, cold water was horrible!

“I realize it was not the fault of the hotel, however; the power outage really was a problem. Neither my husband nor I could take a shower, there was no hot water available. Could not they at least have a generator available to ensure hot water?”

• Willing to correct mistakes.
• Made allot of mistakes in restaurant, didn't bring towels, vending machines didn't work had to go back all the way to the lobby to get refund etc.

• There are wonderful exercise options and a beautiful golf course to walk around with a driving range that is very affordable.
• For some people the three buildings are a little bit spread out requiring some walking although flat and doable for wheelchairs.

“This is an outstanding, privately located resort with lovely, large rooms with beautiful robes for your use. Decor is excellent and lovely gardens are all in the Williamsburg style. All areas including lounge, dining, pool, fitness, etc. are extremely spacious, comfortable and tastefully done. The golf course is fabulous. Great place for wedding parties, rehearsals, business conferences, etc.. All located very close to great shopping as I discovered but not noted anywhere. Highly recommend for anyone and all!!!!”

• Nice atmosphere - well furnished, nice landscaping.
• Strange schedule of breakfast on Sunday - there is a break from 10:00 - 10:30 as they switch from breakfast to brunch - they turned away 14 people.

“The reception staff is cold and not customer service centric - they seemed confused, couldn't find my reservation until I went back to my car to retrieve my confirmation number, and acted as if reservations were icky and to be avoided.”
