• We asked for a special consideration and was granted it with pleasure.
• Location was not the best for our intent.

“We were with 4 other friends. Asked for a special room and table for a card game. We were treated royally and had a great time. The valet parking was very good and we felt safe and secure when we left the hotel. Employees were friendly and helpful at every turn.”

“The air wasn't working in our room. We got switched for the last of 4 nights. Also a tack coming out of the floor, no response to the note we left for housekeeping. Very small bath. No long mirror.”

“It was a decent hotel but having once stayed in the Embassy Suites in Downtown Des Moines, I feel these hotels do not belong in the same category of 3 stars. I'd say the Embassy is 3.5 stars and the Renaissance is 2.5 stars.”

• Great location in downtown Des Moines.
• Very old bathroom with squeaky fixtures.

“The hotel was nice, but the room we received was tiny. One double bed in a 8'x 10' room with no closet. The bathroom was small as well, and the shower was very uncomfortable - temperature would not stay constant - would vary from scalding to ice cold without touching anything.”

• Clean - great location.
• Small rooms, thin walls - we heard every time our neighbor was in the bathroom.

“The hotel was clean, and the staff was helpful and friendly. I understand this hotel is older, but the rooms are incredibly small, and the walls are thin. Each time a neighboring room's occupant took a shower or flushed a toilet, we heard it.”

• I like the view out of our room window and the layout of the room. It meets our needs and we did not feel cramped.

“The hotel was very nice and clean. It has a great view no matter where your room is located. You either look at the Capital or the river which is excellent. The hotel is in a not so secure area because our car was stolen while parked out on the street less then a block from the hotel.”

• They stuck me in a tiny room with a broken door.

“The hotel was nice and in a great location, but when I arrived they explained that they were full and had to put me in a smaller room. The room was tiny with a super-8 feel. They offered me a few complimentary things, none of which I had the time or the need of.”

• Lounge manager was rude and ignored another couple when I brought it to his attention he continued to ignore the.

“Front desk staff was very polite Tried to help address the issue with the lounge. Location great. Rooms were fabulous. Lobby was beautiful.”

• They had and amazing breakfast that was included!
• Not enough parking close to the door.

“A top notch hotel. I felt safe and totally comfortable. The staff were everything you could ask for. They were great. I still can't believe what a nice breakfast they provided. I made my own waffle, and it was perfect!”

“Great interesting older hotel. Totally remodeled and VERY NICE. Staff was super great. This would be a great place for a quiet weekend away with a loved one. NOT great for business travel because of parking issues, and location. (we had a trailer).”

“There is no way I would have given this hotel a 3 star. We stayed in a king room and it was just that a room with a bed enough room to go around the bed. The only breakfast they provide is buffet for 11.99 or you can order it to be delivered to your room. The bathroom was just as small and the toilet had its own problems.”

• The staff was amazing and so was the room. I can't say enough positive things about the hotel.
• The only thing I can think of is that the pool table area of the bar was very hot and couldn't be made cooler.

“I was thrilled with this hotel, the location, staff, facilities, breakfast, and the work out and pool areas. I stayed two nights, one in a renovated room and one in a room that had not been renovated yet (I had originally only planned on one night but liked it so much I cancelled my Hilton reservation and stayed in this hotel a second night). I had a hard time telling between the two except for the bathroom fixtures. Yes, the curtains were older and a little discolored in the un-renovated room but what would you expect? If they didn't need changed why would the hotel be renovating? The beds were big and cozy and the two baths per room made it very nice for sharing. The hotel is connected to a skywalk system that made movement around the city easy, inexpensive and yes, enjoyable. I will stay here any time I am headed to Des Moines or the surrounding area. Wow I had a wonderful experience.”

• The linens were nice and the hotel is very convenient to downtown activities.
• I felt we were given a room which was not suitable for two people. It was very, very small - with just a full size bed.

“We booked this room for two adults, assuming we would have at least one queen size bed and a chair or two. Not so. We were given a "European Style" room - which was approximately 10 feet by 10 feet. The room was dingy and the bathroom was dated. The shower went from very cold to very hot - evidently depending on others in the hotel using the water at the same time. The hotel was extremely noisy. Any talking or noise from inside a room was easily heard in the hallways and in adjacent rooms. I have stayed at this hotel before, and was pleased with it, but it seems a bit run down, and overall, it was a disappointment. We much prefer other nearby hotels, and will probably not stay there again.”

“I stayed here for one night with my wife on the way to another city. The room was comfortable, if not a little undersized. We had a pleasant stay and the food was pretty good. You can't go wrong with the location and quality of this hotel.”

• The staff was very friendly and helpful in fixing the problems we encountered.
• The room they gave us originally was a double bed with approx. 1 foot on each side of the bed - Tiny!

“The hotel is beautiful, and most of the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The hotel still has some of its "original" rooms however that are the size of a small walk-in closet and can barely fit the double bed.”

• Comfortable beds, although they were small (double).

“Considers itself an upscale, Downtown old hotel, but cramped to the point of making us claustrophobic. Very nice staff. Compressors outside our window on roof and ventilation system above ceiling sounded like a freight train complete with periodic horn all night.”

• 2 pools, 1 was cleaning and the other 1 had only 2 jets no tan/bed.

“Pay parking (but that's the town). Again, hotel was pretty nice. The 1 pool that kind worked but 98.5 degrees is not warm/hot and 2 jets give us a break. No exhaust in bathroom either. Skywalk/great. Nice service.”

“This hotel was great and I would recommend it to others. I think we stayed in a newly remodeled room because the decor and bathroom were up to date compared to online pictures that I had seen. Very nice and comfortable. Staff were great and very helpful. We parked at a city parking ramp (4th and Grand Ave.) that was connected directly to the hotel by a skywalk, so that was very convenient considering it was very cold outside. We would definitely stay there again. The hotel restaurant's breakfast was excellent as well (buffet was $11.00).”

• The hotel had some problems in getting to the skyway in that you had to walk through a few rooms to get there. A few more added signs would help.

• The workout facilities and staff were great.
• Horrible bar/lounge.

“Nice hotel with a very friendly and good staff. Small but clean rooms. Workout facilities above average, but didn't seem all that clean. The attached hotel bar/lounge had a staff that did not seem to know what they stocked. Among the 4 persons in our party, one drink was sent back, and two others were left unfinished. The hotel is fine, but get a drink and socialize elsewhere.”

• Did not have a microwave available so I had to eat cold soup. Yuck!

“The hotel was very attractive and a nice stay. One thing that was not a big deal to me but I know most people would have not liked was the heating unit popped pretty loudly. It just reminded me of the old days with steam heat and I can sleep in most any environment.”
