• Nicely decorated. Comfortable beds, clean most staff very friendly and helpful.
• Had a hard time finding it.

“The hotel was really nice, we did have a hard time finding it though, it was in the middle of the block on a one way street we expected it at a corner from the address, but now that we know where it is we will mostly likely stay again.”

• We had 2 bathrooms and the rooms were spacious! The staff was great.
• Trash cans need to be bigger. Need bigger mirror.

“The staff was great and we had small kids they brought us up a bigger trash can gave us extra towels and even came up and vacuumed the mess the kids made after dinner. The rooms were very roomy and I loved having the second bathroom.”

• Walking distance to local bars, clubs, and nightlife, a number of good restaurants within walking distance also.
• The room was noisy, was woken up by the family next to me at 5:30 am with the alarm going off every 10 minutes, then a crying baby for the next 2 hours.

“Hotel, great location, great staff, walking distance to the nightlife of the city. Very clean, nice pool and hot tub area. rooms are very nice and the lobby is very upscale. At time parking can be an issue but worth the trouble. I have stayed here almost a dozen times and always been a great stay. Had only one stay that was just ok and that was not the hotels issue it was with the guests in the room next to mine.”

• Elevators are very slow. But then it is an old hotel.

• It was very clean and I thought all of the staff was very nice.
• The front desk clerk on checking in could have been a little more accommodating.

“A room with 2 full size beds and 2 bathrooms. I would have preferred a queen or king bed. Room was close to a noisy ice machine which woke me up at 5am and too close to the elevator. The Olympics were on so it was nice to watch in the lounge where there was a big screen TV and enjoy good drinks.”

• Location downtown can't be beat!
• Every time I go to the Savery the beautiful front lobby smells like bleach.

“This is my favorite hotel to stay at in Des Moines. It is close to Farmer's Market, Civic Center and Events Center. I stayed two nights and my room was a huge corner room (suite) on the top floor. I have stayed at the Savery dozens of times and I am always pleased with my visit. Try out the new wine bar on Court Avenue Sbrocco. Other great places close by are Centro, Splash and Racoon River. In the winter you can walk in Skywalks to stay warm. Also, ask hotel desk how to get to East Village close by and really eclectic shops and Restaurants.”

• The high-speed Internet worked.
• I did not like anything about this hotel.

“When we went to the room the attendant had assigned, the key given to me would not unlock the room door. Then, a person opened the door from the inside. It became apparent that the attendant had directed us to the wrong room. Also, whenever we went the front desk to ask for help, there was never anyone there. The room we ended up taking was a handicapped-accessible room, which is not a problem except that the shower was not contained.”

• The amenities in the room were wonderful.
• Had to pay for parking.

“The staff was very friendly and upgraded our room, so we still had a king sized bed and the kids had a hide-a-bed. There was a small kitchen, wonderful bedding and great amenities like robes! We really enjoyed our stay!”

• Loved the location and the beds were really comfortable with lots of pillows.
• Bathroom was very small. Food and drink prices were very high.

“Had a great weekend and would stay there again. We were able to park free in the parking garage across the street. Hotel was very clean and the staff was very friendly. Did not have a complimentary breakfast. You could order food but the prices were very high. Location was perfect, right downtown.”

• The carpet in the hallway wasn't clean, and the TV was older with volume problems.

“Very nice, quiet hotel. Loved the location, as we like to be downtown and within walking distance of Court Avenue and Principal Park. We were given a beautiful, large bedroom that had two bathrooms. The staff was friendly and helpful. The bedding was nice, and the beds comfortable. Loved the decor.”

• Staff put two cribs (real cribs) and a fridge in our room for no additional cost.
• I left my toiletries bag at the hotel and when I called housekeeping they never returned my call.

“This is an older hotel that has a few updates, but still feels outdated in some ways (the bathroom is a good example). The staff was excellent and the value was very good. We would stay at this hotel again, but we wouldn't want to pay more than we did.”

• We asked for a special consideration and was granted it with pleasure.
• Location was not the best for our intent.

“We were with 4 other friends. Asked for a special room and table for a card game. We were treated royally and had a great time. The valet parking was very good and we felt safe and secure when we left the hotel. Employees were friendly and helpful at every turn.”

“It was a decent hotel but having once stayed in the Embassy Suites in Downtown Des Moines, I feel these hotels do not belong in the same category of 3 stars. I'd say the Embassy is 3.5 stars and the Renaissance is 2.5 stars.”

• Very old bathroom with squeaky fixtures.

“The hotel was nice, but the room we received was tiny. One double bed in a 8'x 10' room with no closet. The bathroom was small as well, and the shower was very uncomfortable - temperature would not stay constant - would vary from scalding to ice cold without touching anything.”

“The hotel was clean, and the staff was helpful and friendly. I understand this hotel is older, but the rooms are incredibly small, and the walls are thin. Each time a neighboring room's occupant took a shower or flushed a toilet, we heard it.”

• I like the view out of our room window and the layout of the room. It meets our needs and we did not feel cramped.

“The hotel was very nice and clean. It has a great view no matter where your room is located. You either look at the Capital or the river which is excellent. The hotel is in a not so secure area because our car was stolen while parked out on the street less then a block from the hotel.”

“There is no way I would have given this hotel a 3 star. We stayed in a king room and it was just that a room with a bed enough room to go around the bed. The only breakfast they provide is buffet for 11.99 or you can order it to be delivered to your room. The bathroom was just as small and the toilet had its own problems.”

• The staff was amazing and so was the room. I can't say enough positive things about the hotel.
• The only thing I can think of is that the pool table area of the bar was very hot and couldn't be made cooler.

“I was thrilled with this hotel, the location, staff, facilities, breakfast, and the work out and pool areas. I stayed two nights, one in a renovated room and one in a room that had not been renovated yet (I had originally only planned on one night but liked it so much I cancelled my Hilton reservation and stayed in this hotel a second night). I had a hard time telling between the two except for the bathroom fixtures. Yes, the curtains were older and a little discolored in the un-renovated room but what would you expect? If they didn't need changed why would the hotel be renovating? The beds were big and cozy and the two baths per room made it very nice for sharing. The hotel is connected to a skywalk system that made movement around the city easy, inexpensive and yes, enjoyable. I will stay here any time I am headed to Des Moines or the surrounding area. Wow I had a wonderful experience.”

• The linens were nice and the hotel is very convenient to downtown activities.
• I felt we were given a room which was not suitable for two people. It was very, very small - with just a full size bed.

“We booked this room for two adults, assuming we would have at least one queen size bed and a chair or two. Not so. We were given a "European Style" room - which was approximately 10 feet by 10 feet. The room was dingy and the bathroom was dated. The shower went from very cold to very hot - evidently depending on others in the hotel using the water at the same time. The hotel was extremely noisy. Any talking or noise from inside a room was easily heard in the hallways and in adjacent rooms. I have stayed at this hotel before, and was pleased with it, but it seems a bit run down, and overall, it was a disappointment. We much prefer other nearby hotels, and will probably not stay there again.”

“I stayed here for one night with my wife on the way to another city. The room was comfortable, if not a little undersized. We had a pleasant stay and the food was pretty good. You can't go wrong with the location and quality of this hotel.”
