• The rooms were very clean.
• Hard to get in to the check in area with one way streets. The pool was so cold kids tried to swim and were cold enough that they had blue lips.

• I liked the downtown location. The hotel lobby was open and inviting.

• The room was superior in every way - luxury beyone expectations.
• The woman at the desk when I checked in was grumpy - possibly it had been a long day for her.

“The hotel was close to the convention I was attending; the parking garage was free and accessible; the room was beyond belief. The attractiveness, the spaciousness, the sheer luxury of the room was such that I used my cell to gloat to friends who had worried about my going alone to a downtown area.”

• Staff was very helpful in changing our room when the first room smelled smoky. Nice pool. Convenient location.
• Hotel went non smoking over a year ago, but carpet looked worn and some areas of hotel smelled of stale smoke. Need to change carpet?

“Pool was lovely, but whirlpool was cold and pool hot. Staff was wonderfully friendly. Few restaurants open late Sunday night but they helped us find a good one. The carpets looked worn, and carpeted public areas of hotel smelled like stale cigarettes.”

• The beds and bedding are wonderfully comfortable, and the pillows are fabulous.
• $17 parking, not really many other choices.

• Clean, friendly.
• Parking, swimming pool closed (early), fitness room miss abs equipment, vending machine out (8th floor), TV was not flat screen and not much channels.

“Need free parking, need more TV channels, not expensive movies, option to get refrigerator and microwave in the room.”

• This hotel had a great downtown location.
• If you stay during the week, you'll need to pay for parking.

“Our stay at the Marriot Downtown was great! Our room was large and very comfortable, the pool was a perfect temperature, the hot tub was large and nice, but a little too warm for us. The workout room was incredible, lots of equipment with TV's attached to each one to help pass the time. We ate the Sunday brunch at the restaurant, and it was delicious. The location was great, close to many restaurants, the Civic Center, and the farmer's market. We stayed on the weekend, so metered parking was free, but just realize if you stay during the week, you'll have to pay $12/day to park in the garage. Overall, it was an excellent hotel and we plan to stay there again.”

• Restaurant was terrible, worst I've had in 10 years, horrible food, poor service.

• Everything cost - water, internet service, TV, parking, food.

“The only people that were friendly and helpful were the valet service and the guy who did eggs & waffles. Not one other person smiled or even said hello. We would not stay at this motel again!”

• Pay to park? I've never had to do that before at a hotel, and I've been all over!

• The beds were wonderful, no wonder Marriott promotes their sheets, mattresses, etc!
• The bathroom smelled a little musty, but I informed them.

“This was a great experience, my mother and I luxuriated on the beds and spent time in the nice pool/whirlpool.”

• The staff at this hotel was responsive and friendly.
• We were placed next to a large group of loud young men, and were awake most of the first night.

“We have stayed at the Des Moines Marriot several times, and as usual, were generally pleased. Unfortunately this trip, we were right next to some very loud individuals who literally partied all night. Even worse, the rooms were adjoining, so the walls were paper-thin. We chalked it up as bad luck this time, and the staff was very helpful to relocate us for the second evening.”

• Not clear on a lot of things.

“There is no place to park when you pull up. Valet is quick to flag you down get you a ticket and get you moving. I go to the cubs game come back to hotel that night and look at my valet ticket to see I am being charged $17. Then it says to call 5 minutes before so they can have your car ready for you. I did then to find out they charged me another dollar to make the phone call to valet.”

“This is the worst Marriott hotel in the US because of hall noise and pump/compressor noise and vibration. Impossible to get a good night's rest!”

“This is a comfortable place to stay, especially if you want to be close to the downtown life. The great farmers market Sat mornings and good restaurants. The skywalk system makes it easy to get anywhere without braving the elements.”

• Typical Marriott. Nice bedding.
• Spendy valet. Older rooms.

“Nice quality hotel. Great valet service, but pricey. Pool area adequate. Workout area was very nice. Nice that the pool/workout area is on 3rd floor and you don't have to walk through people checking in to get there.”

• Quality on the decline, indifferent staff.

“Aging with indifferent management, probably trying to squeeze out all the goodies before sale or renovation. They still charge $13.00 daily for in room internet. Parking in city garage inconvenient, but location central and Des Moines probably has the cleanest, safest and neatest downtown in the country. Stay here if you have a good reason to be downtown, otherwise try West Des Moines.”

• The girl at the front desk that met me first was very helpful.
• The valet parker was not friendly, we pulled up to unload and she told us we had to move.

“When we pulled up to the parking the valet girl told us we had to move. We were not using the valet parking and my husband had just unloaded the suit cases and she kept telling us we had to move. By the way there was no car behind us at the time either. We felt just because we weren't using valet parking that we couldn't pull up to the motel to unload.”

• The elevators were slow and it is a high rise hotel.

“Long and short it was great. Very nice Marriott hotel. Would like there to be free wireless in the rooms or at least more terminals with internet in the business center, but other than that and the elevator speed it was great!”

• Excellent location. Nice accommodations.
• Starting to become outdated and dark.

“Could not have asked for a better hotel for the money. Incredible location, within 2 blocks of everything in downtown Des Moines. The staff was extremely helpful and accommodating, much like a 5 star hotel. Hotel is a little outdated, but would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.”
