“I would not recommend this hotel to travelers with a family. Their Aug 23, 2009 by

“The hotel is walking distance to the Gas lamp District and close to shopping. This hotel is not advisable for romantic getaway. Parking @ $20.00 for valet should be included with hotel registration. Please advise future patrons.” Jul 5, 2009 by
Ruth from Beacon Falls,CT
“At first, we were very unhappy with this choice of hotel because it looked shabby and parking was extra. But the view from the roof and the old elevator, made up for it. The room is tiny, the bathroom a closet. Since I'd never stayed in downtown San Diego, it was worth a try at the price. I wouldn't go back but I don't regret having stayed one night,” Apr 7, 2009 by
Brian from Santa Fe Springs,CA
“This hotel was great as long as you go in expecting to stay at an older, nostalgic hotel. Yes its been upgraded recently, but the building is still 100 years old. The elevators still run at the same speed that they did 100 years ago, and the fact that the hot/cold water wasn't always predictable was OK because at least the hotel had indoor plumbing and we didn't have to share the bathrooms with all the other folks on the same floor. It was FUN! And I would stay there again in a heartbeat.” Mar 29, 2009 by
Anne from Indianapolis,IN
“This vintage hotel reminds me of hotels I've at in Europe - I loved the funky character.” Mar 27, 2009 by
Melanie from Marion,IL “Would never stay there again.” Nov 15, 2008 by
Ed from Downey,CA
“The hotel is a fixed up older hotel. The rooms are rather small and the elevator a bit cramped especially if you have bags. The parking is terrible. There is pay as you go parking next door with a max of 9 hours at $3 an hour. Valet is $20 and you have to wait about 20minutes to get your car and to leave it, good luck if there is someone ahead of you. They only have one guy parking all the cars, so you are waiting blocking traffic.

“Yes, it is old and the rooms were a bit small but our double room served it is propose, to shower and sleep. My teenage kids thought it was cool especially the old caged elevator and the access to the rooftop. We did not get to try the restaurant as it was too late by the time we left for dinner, they would not let the kids in. We had a memorable time on our short trip to SD. We will return!” Jul 31, 2008 by
Brian from Gilbert, AZ
“Nice, but really not traveler friendly due to zero parking and number of one way streets surrounding the hotel.” Jun 5, 2008 by
Linda from San Francisco, CA
“Not a conventional Ramada. Rather, seemingly a converted former little people rest home. Tiny room. Tiny bed. Tiny elevator with roll back metal gate. Nice staff. Great location, but the same comfort level as sleeping in your car.” Apr 30, 2008 by
Leanne from Rolling Hills, CA
“The Ramada Gaslamp was quaint and the staff that I encountered was very friendly and professionally polite. I would recommend this hotel to friends and family and return for myself. They did great.” Apr 16, 2008 by
Jeff from Newport Coast, CA
“Modest accommodations in a killer area. Close to all shops and restaurants within the Gas lamp. Very friendly staff.” Mar 13, 2008 by
Fernanda from Seal Beach, CA
“Overall, a great place for the price, the staff was very friendly and the location is great for young people. Close to restaurants, bars, etc.” Feb 7, 2008 by
Gordon from Vancouver, BC CA
“This is a beautiful old Victorian building that has been cheaply restored with fake period crystal chandeliers, missing crystals in the lobby. The 1913 cage elevators are fun, but not if you are in hurry and the doors would be dangerous for childrens hands. My room was tiny, with a contractors grade sink in one corner, a teeny tiny shower stall and the toilet crammed into what may have been a closet at one time. There is no closet. The TV didn't work, and the hotel staff couldn't have been less interested, and did nothing. The bed linens, though clean, were definitely showing their age, as were the towels. The carpeting was also spotty, and had seen better days. The location, however, is excellent.” Nov 4, 2007 by
Sharon C. from Carlsbad, CA
“Great location for a night in the Gaslamp area, right in the heart of the action. Small rooms and bathroom but very clean and comfortable beds. The staff was very helpful and the old elevators with the gates were charming. Not a hotel to spend hours in but a clean, great location that I would stay in again.” Oct 2, 2007 by
Tre from Lawrence, KS
“The room I had was pretty small, no closet and hardly enough room to walk in front of the bed. I was on the 5th floor and the average wait time to ride the elevator down was 5+ minutes. Obviously I took the stairs but would have preferred the elevator. You are definitely paying for location at this hotel.” Jul 23, 2007 by
Matt from Huntington Beach, CA
“I love old boutique hotels. This hotel was not well maintained or cleaned. The maintenance appeared to consist of a bucket of paint and a caulking gun. A musty smell was found in the common areas, and the room had mold on the bathroom window, and poor fixtures. It is a shame this beautiful old building doesn't have a better tenant.” Jul 18, 2007 by
Mark from Waco, TX
“The hotel was in an excellent location to dining areas. The hotel room was very small with minimal room to move. The bathroom had no bath tub just a small shower. Valet service was poor due to no parking except on the street in front of the hotel. I had to make the block at least once (4 times upon arrival) each time I wanted valet service.” Jun 11, 2007 by
Dan from San Jose, CA
“If you want a nostalgic old hotel in the heart of the Gaslight District, this is a great option. Do not expect spacious rooms, however. The beds are all queens, the showers are small, and the elevators are old-fashioned. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and that ensures all the hotel's quirks only add to its charm. In comparison to what you might get for your money in a more modern hotel, but its location and friendly service make up for it.” Apr 9, 2007 by
Steve from Laguna Niguel, CA
“It is a convenient, moderately priced hotel which was fine for a short stay. ” Mar 10, 2007 by
Damian from Glendora, CA
“The valet ignored me and I sat in my car for a long time while he helped people who came after me. It was very upsetting.” Jan 25, 2007 by
Larry from Holland, MI
“Great location, efficient valet parking, small, but clean rooms, a lot of old charm, free internet on 1st floor, great breakfast restaurant on site.” Nov 2, 2006 by
Steve from Camdenton, MO
“For economy stay in the lamp district it would be hard to beat this hotel for business travel. The staff was always cheerful and willing to help. For the base rooms on a romantic trip I wouldn't be as likely to recommend it. The room I had was very small and showed its age. It is not a modern hotel by any stretch, but for those looking for location or old style this hotel is worth checking out.” Sep 28, 2006 by
Chas from Lakewood, CO
“Very old hotel and it fits in nicely with the gas lamp district. Location is central, very close to everything downtown as well as the ocean and Balboa Park. There is no parking, but the hotel will valet for $18 day. Rooms are small. The suites are recommended if you have a child. Not ideal for large families.” Aug 28, 2006 by
Kel from Chicago, IL
“Great location, clean, restaurant on site has good breakfast, free airport transport was a great plus. Rooms are small but ok if you are not spending a lot of time there.” Aug 18, 2006 by
Danna from Port Orchard, WA
“Horrible, horrible, horrible!! Not a 3* at all. We took pictures to document it. Waited over 30 min. and got no one because we absolutely didn't want to stat there. but, being a teacher, I couldn't afford to risk losing the money. They said they didn't get the money from you guys until after the stay, so they wouldn't refund me. It was a vicious cycle. We want a refund. this hotel was a joke. it had so many hazards. That is why we took pictures. They refused to answer any emails or phone calls, even before the trip, as well as the day of arrival. We were lied to about the hotel star level. It was all very deceptive.” Aug 10, 2006 by
Arthur from Granada Hills, CA
“Room size 10ft x 10ft rooms1900. Elevators no valet service. No bell service. Bell carts do not fit into elevators. No customer service.” Aug 6, 2006 by
Dawn from Mesa, AZ
“This hotel was built in 1913, but when Ramada bought it, they should have brought it up to this century. The elevators are VERY old and VERY small, and with the ancient doors and gates, VERY unsafe for children. I also felt like there were many hidden charges... Most hotels can accommodate you if you need 2 beds in a room. With this place, it is an upgrade with an additional charge attached. Also, you have NO parking options except to use their valet, which is $18 per day. I just felt like I could have gotten more than a 2 star hotel if I had known I was going to pay another $40 per day in hidden charges... By the way, upon arrival we had to unload kids and luggage while double parked, and you could expect a 20 min wait for the valet to bring your vehicle back to the hotel. They REALLY need to hire another valet. Oh yes, the clincher: apparently security is not what it should be... During our stay there were apparently kids smoking on the roof (not dealt with) and one of them supposedly pulled the fire alarm. Imagine, at nearly 2 in the morning, headed down the hall in our pajamas, carrying our 1, 3, and 5 year old... Fun for the whole family! NOT!” Aug 3, 2006 by
Cynthia from Peralta, NM
“The hotel was great, but was not suited to young families. The rooms were small and only had one queen size bed. Most hotels have two beds. It cost extra to upgrade to adjoining rooms. ” Jun 25, 2006 by
Jim from Tucson, AZ
“Generally good, except for parking, room size.” Apr 14, 2006 by
Daniel from Lancaster, CA
“I just love those older buildings. I will come back and stay there again.” Apr 4, 2006 by
Janet from Glastonbury, CT
“This hotel was clean, comfortable. It was very old, (but well maintained for the most part) which created a rather charming atmosphere. The view of the city from our room was very nice. However, as we were very tired and had to get up early to catch a plane, it was not conducive to a restful night. There was also some kind of celebration on the street that lasted well into the night. I found the elevators a bit scary. It was difficult to get the luggage on and off as you had to hold the door and the sliding gate open at the same time or they would spring closed. Otherwise this hotel was worth the price. Conveniently located to the airport and the hotel transportation was punctual.” Mar 16, 2006 by
Stephani B. from Indianapolis, IN
“Old historic elevator is slow to wait on and a little cramped. Overall it was nice and encouraged you to enjoy the city. The best part is it was walking distance to many restaurants and the bus and trolley stops.” Mar 16, 2006 by
Andrea from Tucson, AZ
“The hotel was nice until we got to our room. The room was so small. There was one small window that looked out to a wall. The room was really dark a reminded me of a dungeon. No sunlight came into the room and it just felt dark all the time. You also have to pay for parking which ups the price of the hotel $18 more a night. This hotel just is not worth it.” Feb 27, 2006 by
Thomas from Prescott, AZ
“This Ramada is in a class of its own and a real find for anyone into clean and charming boutique hotels. Don't be fooled by the Ramada name if you associate it with chain hotels; there's nothing "chain" about this hotel. A friendly personable staff will gladly respond to every need. You'll sleep like a log on first class bedding and be happy to be in the cozy rooms. It's a perfect complement to life in the gas lamp district.” Jan 11, 2006 by
Nancy from Salisbury, MD
“The staff was friendly, helpful and courteous. They helped my stay be more comfortable.” Dec 31, 2005 by
Jacques from Olsted Falls, OH
“A historical, boutique type hotel that will appeal to those that like unique surroundings, safe location, and a pleasant departure from modern same, same hotels. Also, the price made my stay all the more enjoyable.” Jul 27, 2005 by
Jan from Ofallon, IL
“People should know that the hotel was built in 1913. If they're expecting modern conveniences, they aren't to be found. but if you groove on the old timely elevators (very slow) and funky rooms, go for it.” Jul 25, 2005 by
Jim from Oxnard, CA
“I will not stay again at this hotel.” Jun 3, 2005 by
Rosa from Mesa, AZ
“Charming. Gives you a chance to experience Old San Diego. Brian's Eatery located in the Hotel is excellant.” Jun 2, 2005 by
Shaji from Friendswood, TX
“Not a clean Hotel and should not be given a 2 star quality...1 star should be enough.” Apr 28, 2005 by
Lashawna from Paradise, CA
“It was fun to stay there. It had a neat old elevator. It was fun to go on the roof for the view. We were close to the mall, shopping, and a lot of restaurants. There were a few strange people downtown begging, etc..” Mar 20, 2005 by
B from Madison, WI
“Price and location were great for budget (student) travel. Plenty of shopping, dining in the area. Easy walk to the convention center. Airport shuttle!!!” Jan 28, 2005 by
Karen from Anaheim, CA
“It was right in the heart of the Gaslamp District and within walking distance of Horton Plaza and many restaurants. The service was very friendly. Because it is an old building, it had small rooms, small showers and the water would get suddenly hot, there was an additional price of $15 per day for parking (plus tipping the valet) and the elevators were very slow (but only one was working).” Jan 15, 2005 by
Jesusita from Phoenix, AZ
“The hotel was nice however, when we pulled out the ironing board from underneath the bed, trash came out. The parking area was good for compact cars and not large trucks.” Dec 21, 2004 by
Shuichi N. from Reno “No self-parking offered (public $10 for 9 hours or valet $15 for a night). Footprint on bed linen.” Oct 6, 2004 by
Bruce O. from Brooklyn Center “Quiet, cozy, and full of old-fashioned charm. Lovely view from the rooftop patio.” Oct 5, 2004 by
John C. from Auburn “Classic old hotel, friendly staff, located close to the gas light district. Worth the rate.” Sep 16, 2004 by
“This is an older hotel and does show its age. The staff was very accommodating and the rooms had nice amenities.”
