  • Raid the pantry, purified water/ice on each floor.
  • Parking difficult, noisy room.

“It was not quite a four Star hotel, good business hotel. Next to freeway, noisy room (old AC unit). Had to walk a few blocks to eat and not sure of the area. Hotel only offered Italian food, while tasty, not something I want to eat daily.”

  • The view from our room, the quite, the availability of restaurants and entertainment.
  • I wish there had been a vanity in the bathroom to hold personal items. e.g. curling iron, blow dryer, make up. There was space but no furniture.

“My husband and I live in the area and went for a romantic weekend away from home. We had a wonderful time and the hotel experience was key to the success of our trip.”

  • Beautiful accommodations, walking distance to restaurants and train.
  • Airport approach was near and sometimes noisy.

“Great central location in downtown San Jose'. Very nice restaurant in hotel, and many more within walking distance. Train available a few blocks away also.”

  • Very friendly staff. Great bathrooms.
  • No parking. Valet parking for 20 bucks a day is a joke. Small rooms.

  • The brand of amenities Lather were fresh and soothing.
  • Could hear the traffic from the 7th floor.

“Although one of the desk clerks while checking in seemed quite pompous the other made up in helpfulness. The room was as nice as I had expected. It was a relaxing atmosphere. The location was close to a lot of good dining. One of the best things was getting back after a late night and room service cut off is that you are able to go to the pantry on the second level for snacks. All complimentary. All and all a good stay!”

  • Our room was right across the "Raid the Pantry" so no complaints there!
  • No swimming pool.

“It was a pleasant stay - not too flooded with people especially for 4th of July weekend. The bathroom is pretty big and has a TV inside to keep you entertained.”

  • Very outdated rooms and beds were stiff.

  • The decor was attractive yet keeping with the history of the area.
  • The room size was very small and the bathroom would be more efficient with a countertop.

“We needed a room convenient to the airport and wanted to try something more upscale than our usual park-and-fly hotels. Loved the complimentary cookies, fruit, and tasty coffee available before our early AM flight as we didn't have time for breakfast.”

  • It was pretty n quiet.
  • Construction going on, loud, noisy, ice machine wasn't working, remote for TV initially didn't work.

“The hotel was quite pretty, great location but at the same time it was quite noisy. The ice machine on the 6th floor wasn't working someone had to bring us some ice. We had to call someone to fix the remote twice. All n all it was alright was supposed to be a romantic getaway.”

  • Limited room service menu.

“This was a beautiful and cozy hotel and the staff was extremely courteous and helpful. The rooms are ample size, nicely decorated, comfortable beds, and very clean. The room service menu was limited to only Italian food from their restaurant but they do have free snacks between 10pm and 5am every night which includes sandwiches, fresh fruits, cookies, and coffee. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and everything about the hotel.”

  • Tub in shower is to high dangerous. Decor is shabby-namely window dressings

  • No parking, $20 valet. Movies weren't working.

“This is a 3 star hotel at best. The location is poor. Its on a one-way street and there wasn't even a place to temporarily park for valet service when I arrived. I was shocked to see that valet was 20% of my room charge per night. The movies on demand was not working. They have someone turn-down the beds in the afternoon; otherwise you have to fetch the pillows out of the closet. Disappointing.”

  • The entire staff was very gracious, all of them.
  • I didn't find anything that I disliked about this hotel.

“Great downtown location, staff was very friendly; this is a very cool historic building with a tremendous history. My wife and I had a wonderful stay here and would recommend it highly to anyone traveling to the area.”

  • Very clean, loved the room, bathroom. Free street parking after 6pm. Location was great as well!
  • One of the front desk people had a bit of an attitude when I inquired about the internet. Otherwise, everyone was very friendly.

  • Very nice amenities, beautiful bar and lobby rooms.
  • Noisy, old hotel with small rooms, parking expensive.

“Nicely Redone old hotel with location on main streets in San Jose and close to restaurant area. Old rooms are small but nicely appointed, AC is noisy and street noise and airport noise (in landing pattern for SJC) begins at 6 am. Parking is on street and hard to come by. Valet parking available but very expensive.”

  • Old, dated, brassy, poor gym, aloof staff, NOT a 4 star!

“I was pretty disappointed with this hotel. The moment I walked in it smelled a bit like a bathroom & very old/dank. The rooms are updated but look like old rooms that someone tried to revive a little. Brassy fixtures, gym that had about 4 pieces of equipment that weren't great quality. Staff ignored me for awhile when I tried to check in & was more interested in talking to a maintenance worker (3 staff people) than greeting a customer. Would not stay again & was irritated you call this a 4-star... it's not.”

  • The "Raid the Pantry" feature after 10 PM.
  • Drapes in room were disintegrating from sun. Falling apart.

“Great location if I was doing business in Downtown San Jose. Hotel needs some updating. Bathtub was elevated very dangerous scenario getting out with wet feet. A law suit ready to happen. Very noisy with Garbage trucks picking up at 5 am. TV station/cable setup was poor at best. Very few channels to choose from. Parking is impossible unless you pay the $20 per night for valet parking plus tip! Location is probably the best thing going for this very old, old hotel.”

  • Complimentary food & drinks in the pantry and high quality universal weight machine with roman chair, late check out granted, staff.
  • Asked for quiet room placed on side of hotel facing construction.

“Hotel is very elegant with attractive lobby and outdoor restaurant. Amenities include a modern universal weight machine with roman chair in the workout room. Pantry starting at 10:00 pm with complementary snacks and tea and milk by using your room key to enter the pantry & prepare your own was nice. Staff was co-operative about requests such as late check out. Note the continental breakfast is not free.”

  • Large bathroom.
  • Loud, smoking on non-smoke floor, charges for not used things.

“My stay was awful! The hotel is loud being right off the freeway & a major road where you can hear all the traffic noise, there was a jazz band that could be heard loud as day on the 6th floor where I was staying, and the a/c made a racket & didn't work well. The valet parking attendants moved our vehicle and left it unlocked all night with personal belongings in it. I honestly think that housekeeping went through my suitcase as my clothes and underwear were not folded or in the locations I put them. Charges were assessed to our account for mini-bar charges for a mini-bar that we did not have a key to. (Upon arrival, the front desk asked if we needed a key to our mini-bar & we said no since we brought a cooler. Believe it or not we were charged for stuff anyway.) We requested a non smoking room. Supposedly our floor was non smoking but it clearly wasn't. There was an ashtray outside the elevator floor & we could smell smoke from other rooms seep into ours constantly. The beds were uncomfortable, towels were crusty, & the room was smelly. It is definitely not a 4 star hotel as the site claims. It's a 2.5 star at best. The only nice feature is that the bathroom was large. I will never stay there again and would never recommend it to anyone. Horrible experience all around!”

  • Looks nice on the outside, nice rooms.
  • They nickel and dime you.

“Not a bad hotel - but I won't stay there again. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. However, the shower didn't work too well, I had to hold the shower button down to keep the water flowing - being 5 in the morning, I didn't have to call to get it fixed. The supplied iron leaked all over my shirt, no lasting stains, but was not usable for the rest of my trip. They nickel and dime you there - 20 bucks for parking and in room internet costs you (it's wired, no wireless). I'd think that a hotel like this would provide internet, I've see it included in lesser hotels. Anyhow. It's nice a place. I just won't stay there again, too little bang for too much money.”

  • The staff was very friendly and helpful.
  • I only have one very inconsequential complaint - the water for tea in the pantry was tepid.

“The hotel was very nice and in a great location, within walking distance to downtown restaurants without all the noise that happens on the weekends. This hotel has a "Raid the Pantry" which has cookies and stuff to make sandwich's. I had not ever stayed a hotel that had that benefit and it was a nice feature. The rooms were very nice.”

  • Rooms need to be re-done.

“The bar and lobby are very nice, but the guest room decor is very tired and shabby. The desks and chairs were beat up and wobbly, and our bathroom lights shorted out. We didn't even have anything else plugged in! Our room wasn't ready 60 minutes after check-in time, and I found an old comb wedged into the chair cushion. The elevators were broken and there was a false fire alarm. The place needs to be redone.”

  • The only thing I can think of is the room was small but could be considered "cozy.¿

  • Beautiful art-deco style hotel.
  • Charged for parking without notification.

“Beautiful art-deco hotel makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Slightly smaller rooms, but well appointed with small TV¿s in bathrooms and numerous extras. Unfortunately, I was charged for parking without being told there was a charge. The lobby attendant said there was a sign, but it was turned around backwards at my arrival. I had to contact the hotel manager after I left, who at first would not refund the charge, but after additional correspondence when I arrived home, agreed to refund but said I should have expected a charge. Poor customer service makes me give this hotel only 3 star.”

  • The late night food pantry was simple but pleasant.
  • There was noisy construction outside the window and it was on a airplane flight path.

“This hotel was clean. The rooms would not easily open unless one knew to pull the door tight until it made a clicking noise. This delayed me entering my room for 15 minutes whereas they should have just told their clients this upon check in.”

  • Nothing adverse to say.

“I travel every week spending probably 35% of my nights in hotels. This hotel was absolutely wonderful! Good connections for business. Excellent, very comfortable room. Very congenial staff--willing to help and extend themselves to make the stay wonderful. They even turn down your sheets and put chocolates on the bed! I highly recommend this hotel.”

  • Internet access and parking were not free. No hooks in the bathroom.

  • After 10pm this hotel offers snacks, fruit and food at no cost.
  • Rooms were a bit small.

  • Pantry opens 10 p.m. To 5 a.m. Excellent.
  • No pool or hot tub.

“The cookies, apples, oranges, sandwich makings such a pleasant extra. Hotel is beautiful. Near lots of restaurants. Walking distance to the theaters. All the amenities. Business center open just during business hours, but man at the desk said he could accommodate any special needs for internet access. Room lovely and modern. Outside of hotel beautifully old and refurbished and attractive.”
