• Location.
• Old, dingy.

“I was on a quick overnight trip to Santa Cruz with my 10 year old daughter and her friend. Which is a really good deal for Santa Cruz. A few comments: The front desk staff was not very friendly + the pool was good, the kids loved it. The free breakfast was horrible (packaged pastries, cereal, juice and coffee) the room smelled strongly of cleaning products. Although it was fairly recently renovated, it still screams old hotel. It just feels pretty dingy. The hotel is very noisy at night, didn't get much sleep at all + it's within walking distance of the downtown area (Pacific Ave) and the boardwalk) + Covered parking was a plus.”

• Great location, modern furnishings, clean room.
• Small rooms, bad water pressure in shower. High pressure and more air coming out than water.

“The rooms were small but clean and well furnished. Furniture and bedding were updated and modern. The microwave, coffee maker, and mini-fridge were a plus. We were looking for a cheapest room in the area and were surprised at the quality of the room we got. Complimentary breakfast was cereal, coffee, milk, juice, and pastry's.”

• Dirty linen, rude owner.

“Absolutely horrible place to stay. Tiny rooms, linen was dirty and asked us to move to another room. The owner was extremely rude yelling at us. We would never stay here!”

• Unsatisfied with the hotel as the plumbing was bad.

• The pool.
• Room was too cramped.

“The room was too small for all the extra furniture. Water pressure slow. The complimentary shampoo, cups, and coffee used was not replaced. The carpet had lumps under it. There was some mold in the shower.”

“Great place to stay with family. We loved how we were able to walk to the beach/boardwalk. The pool was clean. large and warm. Breakfast was also great. The rooms were clean and beds were comfortable.”

“I learned that the Torch Light Inn is recently under new ownership. I will try to make this the place I stay in Santa Cruz from now on due to location and staff responsiveness.”

• It was located near the beach.
• It was old and the rooms had a damp smell.

“Was not impressed at all, did not like the room, it was shabby. They did not have coffee in the lobby past 9 am.”

• They moved our room to downstairs because my mother is disabled. Also has yummy pastries, cereal, juice, coffee, tea.
• Rooms are a little small to fit the two beds they had in there.

• The grounds were clean and beautiful. The staff was very friendly.
• Only complaint is that the walls were very thin. Was somewhat noisy.

“Stayed there with my girlfriend for the weekend. Upon arrival I was greeted by the manager who seemed to be expecting me, greeted me warmly and generally made me feel welcomed. The rooms were very nice and clean and the grounds were quite nice for the hotel. The area around the hotel was decent, although without a car it would be a pretty long trek to get to any touristy places. The entire stay was very enjoyable. The only complaint I could have is that the walls are very thin. My girlfriend and I could hear everything outside. Thankfully the area was quiet so that wasnt a huge problem, but it was noticeable. Overall great experience!”

• The room was clean. The grounds attractive, a lot of flowers.
• No restaurants nearby, not a real safe feeling walking to the beach as a single parent.

“Clean moderate accommodations. Nothing frilly. Had a copy of the HBO listing sitting on the nightstand, but no HBO! No restaurants nearby and the vending machine was out of order.”

• That it was close to the beach.
• The constant noise from other tenants that would not be addressed unless the desk was called.

“Within walking distance to the beach. Do not stay here if you intend to get any sleep. Upstairs patio was a haven for the loud and rowdy guests. Phone in my room did not work so I had to call from my cell phone at 3:45am in the morning just to get some sleep. I was told by the desk manager the next morning that unless you call to complain then they cannot address the issue. The next night was worse; the walls are paper thin and you will be up all night as I was until 3:00am in the morning.”

• Very convenient to the boardwalk (2 blocks away) and they have a lovely pool.
• There was nothing I didn't like.

“Torchlite Inn is comfortable with all the things I needed - coffeemaker, iron and board, fridge, microwave and a lovely pool. Although it's on a major street it was reasonably quiet. The staff was there when I needed them and they left me alone otherwise.”

• Very clean, well managed, when we had a problem it was immediately addressed, the staff is very polite.
• The parking was a bit rough, small space.

• Room was large and clean and the pool was very clean.
• Parking is a bit awkward.

“This hotel is an older building but so are almost all the hotels in the area. I had read a review about it being in a "bad neighborhood" but it's surrounded by all the other hotels in the area there are several blocks of small hotels clustered together. The room was clean and neat and good size with the basic amenities including a fridge, ironing board and hair dryer. I would describe it as typical for the area.”
