• TV in my room was so old the picture was distorted and it made a high-pitch squeal when I watched it.

“Great location, just blocks away from Union Square. The bed is so comfortable, it's deadly (you won't want to get out of it!). Bathroom is clean, towels are thick and soft. Aveda products, nice.”

• The mattress was excellent! Office chair very comfy, too.
• King bed was too big for room felt cramped.

“Convenient location, very convenient parking garage nearly adjacent, excellent water pressure, excellent mattress. Sketchy blocks to southwest, lovely blocks to northeast, easy to avoid the sketchy parts. Good coffee in the lobby in the am. Hotel staff hardly said hello to me after my initial check-in (I stayed five days). Not unkind or unhelpful, just reticent.”

“We were welcomed by a delightful woman, who immediately made us feel at home. The hotel lobby was very comfortable and inviting, and our room was spacious and beautifully decorated. The hotel was conveniently located just a few blocks from Union Square, the theater, and Bart.”

• In room coffee or tea would have been a bonus - trouble finding seating at cocktail hour.

“The hotel exceed expectations largely due to the staff. From the minute we walked in the door, people were friendly, inviting and approachable. Those traits are hard to find in most businesses and very much appreciated. I would come back in a heartbeat and look forward to staying at another Kempton hotel.”

• Wine reception, intimate. The doormen were very knowledgeable about San Fran and helpful.
• Concierge always wanted to push tours and were not as helpful as I would have liked.

• The location was great for walking to great restaurants, the Theatre, Chinatown, and Downtown and Union Square shopping.
• Valet only parking $50 per night. The walls were a bit thin; we could hear the voices coming from the room next to us.

“We plan to put this hotel on our list as the "go to" whenever we are in San Francisco.”

• The hotel even offers heating pads, robes, slippers and lighted make-up mirror.
• The rooms are standard size for an older hotel in San Francisco.

“We had a nice corner room with two windows. The room would be considered small if you were not use to the older hotels in San Francisco.”

• It had old world style.
• The room I was assigned was so small it made me claustrophobic.

“Great and accommodating people. Easy to skip the visit to the recommended restaurant (Panzer). I could of parked across the street or elsewhere for less. The Staff were the best with accommodating us. The one security staff member was rude and abrupt when asked a simple question about the restaurant hours. I felt I had to apologize about the room size when my partner arrived to see the room.”

• The hotel was very convenient to public transport, shopping, car rental, china town, etc.
• The local is great. It's across from the Hilton but you have to aware of the drugs and homeless.

“This hotel was overall very nice. It does border the tender loin section of the city which is full of drugs, homeless. But so long as you don't turn down that street you're 100% fine. About a block and a half away are several car rental places. We used a tour company that picked up and dropped off at the hotel (thanks to the concierge). We were able to walk all over town being about 2 blocks from Union Square. The hotel restaurant was terrible for breakfast. It was 30 dollars for some tea, coffee, granola and eggs and it was not good quality at all. But there are three Starbucks with in a block and the Hilton has a decent buffet with an amazing view of the city (pricy but worth it) right across the street. Overall this was a very nice hotel to stay in. Quiet, clean, with a nice location and helpful staff.”

• They make you pay to use the internet, even to look up a menu or movie time.

“The hotel was beautiful and clean, the staff friendly and the location is great. My one and only complaint was they make you pay to use their computer, $ 6 for 15 minutes. All I wanted to do was look up a movie time and this seemed ridiculous. The front desk staff did however look the information up for me which was very nice. I think for the price they should give you 15 minutes free on the computer and if you need additional time, then charge for that. I have stayed in two other Kimpton personality hotels and their computer use was free.”

• Some of the neighborhood is getting pretty seedy.

• Unique boutique hotel in a great location.
• The room was nice but very tiny.

“This true boutique hotel in a handy location near Union Square. I expected a small room, but this one was absolutely tiny with the queen bed, the TV armoire and a couple of nightstands filling up just about all of the space (there was no desk or chairs at all). The staff is both friendly and professional. There's a bunch of nice perks (like a coffee bar in the morning and a wine/beer reception in the early evening). I recommend this place, but am prepared for a tight squeeze in your room.”

• Rooms and bathrooms were a bit small, neighborhood a bit rough.

“I took my boyfriend to Hotel Serrano over Valentine's Day weekend and we had a great time. The lobby is beautiful and the staff is friendly. We requested a late check-out and got one without hassle. The rooms were cozy but a bit small, bed was very comfortable! The location is convenient to Union Square but the immediate area surrounding the hotel (the Tenderloin) is rough, so be aware of your surroundings at all times. Overall, we had a great time and will definitely be back!”

• Tub needed a good scrubbing.

“Hotel was very nice from start to finish. Doorman and front desk employees were all very nice and upbeat. The elevators were pretty fast up to our floor. Room was very comfortable and very clean. The air conditioner/heater was controlled by an electric thermastat with the digital readout of the temperature in the room. Room had a very nice big closet with robes hanging inside to use. Bed, pillows, and sheets were all top quaility and comfotable. Wine glasses and ice bucket were provided in the room. Bathroom was clean with plenty of towels. Nice oversized tall tub, good water pressure. Tub felt a little slick, possibly needed to be cleaned better. The place would rate a 10 for me but gets a 9 because of the tub.”

“The valet knew our names when we arrived, very friendly staff and nicely decorated lobby. We had a wonderful stay there with our two small children, 3 & 5 years old. Although the room was small, we knew what to expect. This an older building re-furbished to be trendy and modern - they did a great job. We like the proximity to Union Square too, walking distance to a lot of what SF has to offer.”

“This is my third stay at the Hotel Serrano and it is a very nice boutique hotel in Union Square with a great restaurant-Ponzu. The location is good with easy walking distance from shopping, Union Square, theater and restaurants and although the room and bathroom was small, the bed was extremely comfortable and it is a eco-green hotel.”

• I love boutique hotels and this Kimpton hotel is definitely a boutique hotel. Although the rooms are very small the decor and atmosphere make up for.
• The location was right next to Tenderloin, not to safe and the window of room where extremely dirty.

“The hotel is a perfect example of Kimpton Hotels. Very well decorated, cozy and fulfills your needs. Due to the size of the rooms, I wouldn't recommend for a family, however, for business travels it very nice. Although the Hotels sit close to a questionable area of San Francisco, if you know your way around it's a great location. Staff is always pleasant and helpful. Wine receptions are a nice plus!”

• The restaurant is amazing. the hotel staff are attentive and helpful.
• They did not realize that I had stayed there just three nights previously and I was a returning guest. that would have made a difference to me.

• Room was too warm and we had to blow in cold air to cool it.

“This hotel was convenient to BART and to every place else we wanted to go. We walked everywhere easily, and the staff was cordial in assisting us. I love the atmosphere--it is beautifully renovated, and I appreciate the Aveda products. We hope to stay here many more times in the future. Thanks!”

• Friendly, welcoming staff, pretty decor, quality linens & bed, LCD TV, free internet, wine.
• Lobby too cold to linger & enjoy pm wine tasting or am coffee-needs double door set.

“This small boutique hotel provided us with the very personal service ("How are you today Mr. & Mrs. H?") that makes you feel special. We were upgraded for free for our honeymoon. The executive suite is lovely, with large Jacuzzi tub, lots of granite tile, and antique furniture. Beautiful lobby, very clean room, and pretty, cheerful decor takes away from the drab rain of the city. Great firm mattress, fine linens and down duvet. Prompt attention to small problems or requests. Concierge got us into a great nearby restaurant (John's Grill) at the last minute for NYE when we decided to cancel our late-night dinner. Pontus restaurant (attached to hotel) was excellent for a romantic dinner (try the lemongrass steak and fried rice)! Top-rated Dottie's Cafe is just around the corner and worth the wait for breakfast (awesome berry torte). While the hotel is on the edge of the Tenderloin district, we never felt like we were in an unsafe area, although there are many street people everywhere. .”

• The robes are itchy and they don't pick up room service plates for hours.

• Nice Boutique; hotel. Beds were the best I have ever slept on.
• I would have liked to be in a more tourist friendly area, better for walking around.

“Everyone at the hotel was very nice and helpful. Room was small, for my wife and baby. But, I think that is what you can expect for SFO. Beds and pillows are awesome. Hotel itself was quiet. We slept great. It is very near to Union Square shopping, theatres, restaurants. It is also a pet friendly hotel. We saw many people with dogs, but never heard any. This is a quiet hotel, small lobby just like all of the Kempton Hotels. I would highly recommend it to everyone who wants to be in this area of SFO. Again, we slept like babies, and as you spend so little time in your room, its nice to be able to do this.”

• Way they treated my 7 you granddaughter, like a princess on her first trip to SF.
• Restaurant was small.
