  • Beautiful, historic building right on the trolley car line, wonderful room.
  • The cost for parking your car there with tax $53 a night!

“This hotel is steeped in the history of San Francisco. Wonderful room on the 14th floor with a grand view. The staff is quick to respond to any request and is clearly professional. The top of the Mark restaurant/lounge located atop the building is hard to get into and you should definitely make advanced reservations.”

  • Intercontinental Club was very convenient and the personnel called me by name each time I went in.
  • The "Top of the Mark" is the only restaurant in the hotel. There is no cafe or coffee shop,

“The Mark Hopkins is a very gracious hotel with personnel who are among the most welcoming I've encountered. The hotel has been lovingly maintained and everything I needed was immediately at hand.”

  • Breathtaking views at night time.
  • The location in order to find the hotel and the parking.

“The hotel was super clean and gorgeous. I upgraded my room to get a room on the higher levels for $40 which was absolutely worth it for the skyline view. The room was spacious and totally could be shared with others. I was sad to leave such a pretty establishment. The internet was $12 per day and the valet parking was like $52 per day.”

  • I liked the style of the hotel; nice clean lines and distinct colors. The location is great, on the top of Nob Hill overlooking the city.
  • Arrived later that evening (9 pm) and room requested was sold out - had to settle for a double twin instead of king bed or the smoking floor.

“Very nice, very well up kept (except the smoking floor, avoid the smoking floor) and the staff nice. Overall 3.5 stars+.”

  • Beautiful and historic, luxurious, location and views of the city incredible.
  • Prices on water bottles in room not good- bring your own water or what a concept- drink from the tap!

“Staff was helpful (especially the concierge) and you felt good going back to your room each day. I actually wanted to spend time there as opposed to other places I have stayed at.”

  • Every detail contributed to the first class quality of this hotel.
  • The hotel was fabulous, the walk up the hill to get to it was a bit of a challenge but good exercise!

“This hotel has always been a first class hotel in SF and continues to set the pace for quality, in every way. I would consider myself very fortunate. It is one of the jewels in the crown of great SF hotels.”

  • Beautiful older hotel with much charm. Very clean. Nice views. Nice staff. Provide free apples all day at front desk.
  • We needed 2 beds (family of 4) and the hotel would not accommodate us.

“The Mark Hopkins Intercontinental is a lovely hotel. The rooms are small but they are nice and clean and provide beautiful views of the city of San Francisco. Very nice bathrooms. All updated. Wonderful curb appeal and beautiful lobby. I liked the fact that it was not a huge hotel. It felt more intimate. The staff was helpful with directions and suggestions. My only complaint is that we requested 2 beds because we were traveling with our family (2 kids - one teenager and one toddler). The hotel would not accommodate us. They did, however, offer us a roll-away with a charge of $30 extra. It was fine for our teen and our 3 year old slept with us. I would not recommend this hotel for families because of this reason (and also the rooms are small). But I would return to this hotel in a Heartbeat if I was traveling alone or with my spouse.”

Cleanliness:[10] • Staff:[8] • Location:[8]

  • Soft, comfortable bed. Reasonably close to local attractions.
  • Small, cramped room with too much ornate furniture in the way.

“This is a ritzy tower hotel in downtown San Francisco catering to the upper class traveler. Some 4-star hotels manage to also make the T-shirt tourist feel welcome. This one came close, but missed the mark. Each square foot is precious in this city, so a small room is not a surprise, especially for a solo traveler. But I quickly got tired of squeezing through what felt like a storage room for antique furniture. The armoire holding the TV, dusty mini-bar fridge, and wine/snack trays consumed half the room. Meanwhile you get a closet but no dresser drawers. The bathroom is similarly ornate and holds one person at a time. Internet service was available for $13/day but I didn't try it. The comfortable desk should suit any business traveler who likes the decor of 19th century royal England. This tourist would've been better suited to a Best Western closer to Pier 39.”

  • Simply the best, old-style luxury special-occasion stay we've ever had in our favorite long weekend city.
  • No parking that's easy except valet.

“With an upper story room overlooking the park square and a luxurious evening to loll about sampling the amazing room-service, we really had a chance to enjoy this lovely, classic gem. Subdued elegance, great room-service food, lovely service, fantastic location and the top of the mark, one of the best spots to view the city over a bottle of bubbly in an atmosphere reminiscent of bygone nights among the glitterati. What more could you ask Tip - get the deluxe King room at least, with a good view toward the Golden Gate, and leave the car at home. Oh, and don't miss going next door to the way over-the-top Fairmont in the late hours for an entertaining glimpse of Tiki nightclub culture in the infamous Tonga Room.”
