• The room furnishings were excellent and the location was very nice (marina).
• Understaffed, long waits and a poor hallway carpeting.

“I stayed at this hotel in connection with a business conference. I was initially assigned a room in the worst possible location (ie, ice machine, coke machine and self service laundry). I was told on the second day that I had to move to another room due to some unknown maintenance issue. Due to lack of staff, I had to help a young staff girl with a broken foot move my luggage and was told no luggage cart was available. Gift shop is quite limited with unpredictable hours.”

• Staff was friendly, near the water, great food.

“I have never been to a hotel with nicer staff. From check-in to check-out, everyone was as pleasant as can be. Room service was fast and service was perfect. Soda machines here take credit cards and don't cost an arm and a leg. The room was big, fantastic TV and bathroom toiletries.”

• The location, the terrifically helpful staff, the cleanliness, the restaurant, the pool and hot tub all great.

“The entire experience from reception to shuttle to the Amtrak station was more than exceptional and totally comfortable. It was perfect for relaxing and unwinding after a long working week. The peaceful marina atmosphere was perfect for needing to think, review, and refresh after a hectic previous rush-rush week of competition and politics. The helpful staff was efficient and congenial. It felt like they really appreciated our being there. Well done Doubletree!”

• It's a fine location, adjacent to Marina on bay. Spacious, attractive.
• We were put in a handicapped room, a little restricted room.

“It's a fine facility - although we weren't placed in the best of rooms. Good for handicapped folks - we're not so (although both 80).”

• Free parking, proximity to water, and pleasant staff.
• Must have a vehicle, not on main road, not close to shops.

“A good place to stay if you have a vehicle. It is a bit of the beaten path so you cannot walk to shops nor catch local transportation. Also it is a long walk with luggage from parking spaces to rooms. There is no luggage assistance or carts that I could discern. The restaurant while having a great view of San Francisco Bay has a dreadful menu and terrible food. It is understaffed and service matches the quality of the food served. Strangely enough room service meals were slightly better. As a female traveler I was a bit nervous driving in at night as the location seems isolated and the parking lot not well lit. On the upside if you have kids with you or are into jogging it is adjacent to jogging trails and waterfront parks. The beds were extremely comfortable and the ladies that cleaned were friendly and efficient.”

“Clean rooms, friendly staff, large, adequate parking area. Rooms facing inland are noisier than those facing the bay and less scenic. There are railroad whistles all night long. If you are so inclined there is a nature trail and scenic trail along the bay and a nature center as well. Have to drive to get to off-site dining. Food at restaurant is expensive and fair in quality. All-in-all, a pleasant place to stay. You really need a car to make best use of this hotel.”

• No paper work when you checked out. Even though there was no additional charges, I would expect to get a receipt.

“Hotel was in a very nice location by the Marina. The room was clean and had a lot of room. The staff at the counter was friendly as well. We did not eat at the restaurant because the price was kind of high.”

• The room was clean and the parking was excellent.
• The TV did not work, the tub faucet dripped, and the escutcheons were coming off the handicap bar.

“The hotel was a little tricky to find, but with a GPS system I drove right to it. The room was clean and the parking was excellent. However, when I asked for a map of the area they did not have one. Also, the wait to check it was long at the front desk. I also thought $5.25 for a bottle of beer (Coors light) was a little steep, I can buy the whole 6-pak for that.”

• Cozy bed.
• Very unkind staffs. Even shampoo was run out and the shuttle to Bart didn't run on time.

“Different Doubletree Hotel from others! Very unfriendly staffs. No cookies at check-in. No essential supplies. Housekeeper said they ran out of shampoo and conditioner. We had to wait shuttle to Bart Station for half an hour but, staff told us bluntly that it's courtesy!”

• Rooms were updated and comfy. Nice location on marina.
• One staff member seemed dishonest about an minor incident. Others were awesome.

“The staff was overall very friendly and helpful. The rooms were updated, nice and attractive, with very comfortable beds and pillows. We had a westward view out onto the marina - lots of docked boats, sunshine and SF in the distance across the bay. We could hear seagulls and occasionally we could get caught up listening to the soft marina chime (which sounds like an elevator dinging down the hall every 12 seconds), but most times we tuned it out. The pool is heated and clean and enclosed in a large glass room. The hot tub is large and pleasant. A short and pretty walk along the Marina takes you to a couple of fancy restaurants. Just back on the mainland (off the marina) is the very upscale 4th street shopping center (maybe 1/2 mile away), where the street is lined with local and national boutiques. We found a great toy store next to Peet's Coffee. UC Berkeley is about 2 miles or less directly inland from the marina, and it's easy to drive down to Oakland. We didn't go into SF this time, but we heard it's easy to take the hotel shuttle to the Bart station and then hop on transit. The hotel was quite pleasant and seemed a bit better than a 2.5 star. We had a personal matter that left us with an uneasy feeling about one particular employee, but it was a very isolated incident. Otherwise we were quite happy with this hotel.”

• We waited over an hour for free shuttle pick-up from the Bart. Poor communication with front desk wait time.

“The shuttle pick-up was delayed both days we used it and the front desk staff was not helpful in relaying info from the driver to those waiting. Room only had two towels for a two-bed room. The staff did bring more when requested.”

• A free shuttle anywhere into Berkeley every hour with anytime pickup! Great!
• No snack food machines.

“A comfortable hotel conveniently located at the Berkeley Marina. A great starting point for any business/leisure activity within the city with an free hourly shuttle bus into the city. Hotel decor is modern and has a friendly staff willing to go above and beyond to insure a pleasant stay.”

• The Doubletree was nice and quiet at night but in the middle of renovation during the day. The beds were comfortable.
• I would have been happier with a complementary breakfast and fewer cookies.

“Great hotel for the price. Very clean and classy atmosphere. I am more than happy. Nice room with clean bathroom with granite sink. Nice king-size bed. Hi speed internet is available but they charge you. A flat-screen TV. Dining was good with 15$ buffet breakfast. I recommend this hotel!”

• Service below average, no wireless internet in rooms, not child friendly.

“This hotel is rather run down, though there appeared to be a renovation under way when we were there. The layout of the property is haphazard and difficult to navigate. This is not a good choice if traveling with small children. The playpen arrived hours after our request, and then it did not work. No replacement was offered. There is no complementary breakfast offered here, and one is required to pay for internet in the room. There is free internet service in the common areas (e.g. the lobby), but the layout of the hotel is terrible, and it takes a long walk outside to reach the lobby from the room. On the plus side, the hotel is located near the Berkeley Marina and Cesar Chavez Park, both of which are very nice.”

• The room was well appointed, attractive and clean. Our room was quiet, as requested. We definitely felt we got our money's worth.
• The section we were in was under construction and smelled of varnish, was messy and busy with workmen all about.

“On seeing the entrance desk we felt calmer, on walking to the room our spirits dipped again, seeing the construction workers, plastic covered rugs and pistachio shells in the tiny elevator. But when we opened the door to our room our spirits were elevated considerably by the lovely furnishings, high, white bed and the handsome colors. The frequent bell you hear was atmospheric rather than annoying and the location was calming. The large screen television with HBO was a nice touch.”

“The registration team had improved 100% since my last stay (oct 07) - which made check-in and out amost pleasurable. The room service food was better than the restaurant, arrived hot and in a timely manner (unlike previous visit). Airport shuttle is lacking, however local shuttle is available. Bay views are lovely. Side stepping rennovation work is annoying but badly needed to bring the property up to potential.”

• The location is great.
• Construction, including paint odor, was uncomfortable and the staff made numerous mistakes.

“This is potentially a great hotel. The location is beautiful with a view of San Francisco and very convenient to the city of Berkeley and the University. The staff, however, made numerous annoying mistakes including leaving old soap in the shower and failing to place a rollaway bed in the room that was requested and paid for 12 hours earlier.”

• The bathroom had not been really scrubbed in a long time!

“Basically hotel was great. Computers in lobby. Restaurant/bar facilities. Pool and sauna. Our room had a very sloped floor, so that if you went to the window, you truly "climbed" a hill to the bathroom. Food trays left in hallways way too long. Bathroom had not been thoroughly scrubbed in awhile. I had to clean off smudges on tub and floor. Bathrooms very basic. Towels great though.”

• Customer Service, front desk was not helpful.

“The first room assigned to us had a leaking toilet and although they sent a maintenance man to come fix the toilet, a new room was not assigned to us until we asked for a new room. In fact the maintenance man was going to have to come back the following morning to complete the problem with the toilet. When I asked for a second room, I asked for a nicer room and when we arrive to the second room there were several dirty towels on the floor, and the beds were not made up so we were given a room that hadn't been cleaned by housekeeping. So, we then moved to a third room after speaking with the manager. The manager apologized and gave us a room with a view.”

• It is old and you do a lot of walking to get to your room if it is in another building. I also don't like the heaters in the room for they are noisy.

• The pool and hot tub were awesome. The beds were like a cloud.
• No power for at least 4 hours. Bathroom needs some repairs.

“The regular room was ok. It did need some repairs in the bathroom I had already purchased a suite pryer to my stay on another day. Maybe the suite in the newer building will be in better shape.”

• Cleanliness of bathrooms sometimes varied. Better quality control.

“I stayed at this hotel weekly while attending UC Berkeley. It is a very comfortable hotel. Good food, served late. I always felt safe. It's right on the bay, which is very relaxing and reassuring per my surfer status. The linens have quality. They are updating the rooms, but the rooms are still very nice.”

• They had a shuttle Downtown.
• They were late with a wakeup call.

“This hotel is undergoing a renovation and needs one. The toilet did not flush properly, and I had to have repairs in the room twice. You can't even answer the phone at your desk; you have to go elsewhere in the room. They had a good business center, free internet and so on. But their late wakeup call forced me to skip my shower the morning I left.”

• I liked the comfort and quiet of this hotel.
• I did not like to have to rely on the shuttle to take me into town, for I had no car and walking was not practical.

“Despite what I'd read on the Net about annoying sounds from the Marina that bothered some guests, I heard nothing in my room, which was close to the lobby. Even though the hotel announced a major renovation in progress, the work did not affect me, for they are proceeding one wing at a time, placing guests far from the construction. The hotel is quite spread out, which was only an issue for me when I ventured to the fitness center. It felt too far from my room to go for workouts, though an indoor pool/Jacuzzi was nearby if I had felt like swimming or soaking. A shuttle leaves every hour for anywhere in Berkeley one needs to go, and the drivers were pleasant. It also picks guests up from any location in the town up until 10:30 at night. This was very convenient for me, since I didn't have a car. I walked into town one day, which was a long journey, but it's not an area I would want to pass through after dark. Overall, the staff was friendly, Internet was free, and the room was rather luxurious.”

• It is close to the park, which is a very comfortable to walk or jog, offers very nice view from the park, not the hotel though.
• I was staying in building 4, there was that siren, or sound made to warn ships. It is loud and you can clearly hear it every 5 seconds.

“They should improve the sound proof.”
