  • nice dining area that was non-smoking,good breakfast, central location
  • smoking allowed in lounge,no hot water,room small,bath old

“Problem with hot water plumber had been called but problem not resolved .Main hotel is very old has a lot of character, very pleasant dining area ,breakfast was choice of full english and/or continental, very good, central but fairly quiet location, helpful staff. My only problem besides lack of hot water was as a non-smoking couple we could not sit in the hotel lounge bar comfortably, not a big problem to us as we were visiting our son.For a weekend break the hotel was ok.”

  • The location was ideal, & the room itself had a lovely view over the garden.
  • One of the pipes in the bathroom leaked which could leave the floor quite wet.

“This hotel was a lovely place to stay for a weekend break, the staff were friendly & helpful & the food was delicious. I would say that it is fantastic value for money as the hotel is so close to the city centre & all of the main historical places of interest.”

  • The general hotel ambience was excellent. The room was generally well appointed but of a slightly lesser standard than expected [we were up-graded]. Shower was excellent.
  • Room doors are flimsy and still opened by a key with a large plastic label attached. Car parking really needs some radical consideration to better accomodate the modern traveller.

“Food is slightly more expensive than the local competition, but is of a very good standard.”

  • I though the sleeping area was old and out dated.

“I think adding walking distance or taxis service from the train station would be helpful.

The staff was very curtious and helpful. They all tried to make our stay enjoyable.”

  • Price was reasonable. Breakfast was good.
  • Bathroom mouldy and shower kept scalding me (and other guests we know)

“The hotel decor is a little tired. And because there was a wedding on at the time we stayed, it meant that we felt pushed out because the wedding guests took over all the public areas. It was our wedding night and we felt that we were not important because the wedding party took over the place. We had paid the going rate for our room, but we were secondary to the other guests, who had very noisy children running around the bar.
For the price we paid though we are generally happy. It compares favourably to a Travelodge, although we thought that The Royal would have had nicer bathrooms. The shower kept scalding us - even when we had not adjusted the taps. This was the same for guests in other rooms.”

  • Proximity to the shops.
  • Poor service. Bathroom could have been cleaner.

“I would like to have known that they were basically full, as there was at least one reunion party staying there and hence the staff were over-stretched. This in turn affected the quality of service we received.”
