“This hotel has had a renovation of the visible surfaces. Scratch the surface, and it's a dive. Visit date was 14 - 15 October 2009. Room was on the 5th floor, 24th Street side. Tiny but comfortable and clean. Tiny bathroom: tall people may have difficulty using the toilet. Beneath, new carpet, ancient floors creak. Fortunately, the room above was empty. Traffic noise was loud and relentless. Windows are sealed shut, but leak noise like a sieve. Attempts at sleep are foiled by roaring diesel truck engines, wailing emergency sirens, and honking horns on Third Avenue. There is a quiet period from about 3 AM to about 4:30 AM. Enjoy your blissful hour and a half of sleep. That's all you're going to get. Early morning hot shower? Leave the water running for at least 30 minutes before hot water finds its tortuous way up from the boiler. If you want an early hot shower before departure, you have no choice but to leave the hot water running all night. I gave up waiting, and departed unwashed. Checkout was a non-event. The clerk on duty couldn't persuade the computer to work. After staring at it in silence for a few minutes, he asked if we'd had any incidentals and told us we could leave. No printout, no bill. Other details: Delicious bed linens, comfortable pillows. Advance grade decor. Pleasant and helpful check-in staff at noon on arrival day. No closet, iron, or ironing board.”

“I've stayed at the Marcel twice now. The first visit was quite pleasant, hence the second stay. The first time there, I had a nice clean room, and not too much trouble. In my second visit, they only had a room in smoking left on the second floor. Fine with me since I smoke. I usually get non-smoking since they are often cleaner, but I figured it would be fine. The room was tiny, dirty, and had mosquitoes! When I told them and showed them the bites, they said sorry, but had no other room. The small and dirty I could deal with, but I've now got about 10 bites all over my body and face. I could hear the buzzing next to my ear at night! I've camped out and gotten less bites!”
