“I needed a quiet place in an attractive location to rest after a few days of intensive work. The hotel was perfect for that. I would have liked a view of the river.”

“A perfectly fine place to stay. Light, clean, beautiful bathroom with nice shower and great view. Fine and we slept well on the very comfortable bed, but a disappointment after the last stay. The location was also not exactly convenient to anything leisure related.”

“Beds are super comfortable, our room had a balcony, but no view. Some balconies look onto the Willamette river - very pleasant. The parking charge was over the top for an area not in the downtown core. This would cause us to think twice about staying here, parking should be included, or have a nominal fee.”

“The Avalon is a very modern hotel with a very chic spa and superior staff. Big rooms and big bathrooms make this my favorite hotel in Portland.”

“Our daughter just had surgery, this is why we stayed here. She was so sick, she threw up on the floor, the hotel did not charge us for the mess! That was so awesome of them! The lady told us, if it had been on purpose, we would have charged, but we can't control how our babies react to surgery. Very awesome lady!”

“Although modern and quiet I found the room layout somewhat odd and the location is poor and hard to find.
For whatever reason(s) I was just not excited by this one as I have been with other hotels in Portland.”

“Everybody was very helpful. They let me check in 3 hours early. That really made me comfortable.”

“Overall great experience. Nice bathroom, bed, balcony. Too far from downtown unless you drive or take the MAX. Valet parking seemed to be an unnecessary service that was solely to make more money. The hotel is next to downtown about 2 miles away, & it would have been just as easy for me to park and walk in myself. Breakfast items were available on your floor next to the elevator. It was nice to have breakfast and read the paper & look at the river from our balcony.”

“Very soft bed. Huge bathroom. Nice continental breakfast. Front desk staff very friendly. Location will seem more convenient once the South Waterfront is fully developed. Spa services seemed outrageously expensive. Enjoyed using the fitness facilities. Definitely need to add pay-per-view or movie services to the room TVs.”

“Stylish, comfortable, set in beautiful surroundings. Just a walk from wonderful public transportation into Portland's interesting stops and neighborhoods. The continental breakfast on each floor was healthy, delicious and convenient. Enjoyed the morning papers outside the door.”

“The hotel was very nice and stylish, but lacked amenities of a true upscale hotel. The staff was friendly, but disorganized. Forced valet parking at $18/day was outrageous for a hotel not downtown and fairly necessary to have a car, and was a nu sense. Breakfast was not very well stocked or refilled. Free internet was very much appreciated as well as car service downtown if needed. Overall, I would recommend staying there, especially if you don't have a car or only staying a night or two.”

“It's considered a spa resort hotel but we do not use the spa facilities. It was highly recommended by friends.”

“The hotel itself was great, comfortable rooms. The restaurant was quite pricey for the quality of food offered, however the atmosphere was very romantic. Specialty cocktails were below average. Stick with the standard mixers. Overall the experience was slightly above average.”

“I really enjoyed my stay here. The service was outstanding, open, warm, friendly and professional. The rooms were stylish, quiet, well kept and comfortable much more so than the W Hotel in which I recently stayed. I would heartily recommend this hotel and gladly come back for another stay.”

“The Avalon Hotel is basically located in an office park which astounds me that the room rates are so high - you can find rooms at all of the larger hotels in downtown Portland for similar rates. The hotel is clean and quiet, and serves a great continental breakfast for those who enjoy lighter, healthier fare (no omelettes, hash browns or bacon, etc). The downside of being located in a remote area is that the hotel restaurant is the only option for food, and it is awful. The hotel restaurant provides the food for breakfast, and though the breakfast selection was great, we found mold on our breakfast fruit. It was apparent that appropriate food standards are lacking - be careful! Basically, the hotel restaurant is a completely over-priced trainwreck. Their menu of small plates" were far too small for what they're charging. The server recommended dungeoness crab pasta which was a disappointing 3 small pieces of crab mixed in with spaghetti and bland pasta sauce - could have been served from a can. Our water was never refilled, and we could only order one glass of wine because our young and inexperienced waiter never made it back to our table before our meal was finished. This restaurant is clearly going through growing pains.”
