“ We recently spent five nights at the Hotel Il Gabbiano in Bacoli. It was our fitst trip to Italy (or Europe, for that matter) and we wanted a bood idea of what we were in for. We tried very hard to find reviews of the hotel on the internet, but there were only one or two, and they largely had vague number ratings rather than any information. Well, after five nights there, I think I know why. There just isn't anything to say about this hotel that's particularly good or bad. The web sites speak of a "natural beauty spot", and this is true if you use a sort of tunnel vision. The lovely views that you see in the advertisements are really there. They just aren't all that's there. For instance, the hotel is located on a street that really not much more than an alley. The garbage dumpsters are right in the front, and the smell can be overwhelming when the wind is right. There is a view of the bay and beautiful mountains in the distance, but there are also views of occupied buildings so decrepid and dirty that they see unworthy of residence. Yet, I must say that this hotel tries very hard. The rooms are very small, but the hotel has an intimate feel to it and you quickly become familiar with the staff (good and bad ones) and the other guests. Ultimately, I think the main reason you don't read reviews of this hotel is that there just isn't much to say. Because the hotel has no beach, swimming pool, tennis courts or hiking trails, it really does become just the place where you sleep between visits to other places. During our stay, we visited Amalfi, Capri, Sorrento, Pompeii, and Vesuvius, all of which were quite easily visited by either train or boat from Naples, and all of which were day trips requiring most of the day (10 a.m. until around 9 p.m. in alost every case).
Summing up, it is a nice hotel with a wonderful albeit expensive restaurant, and a staff that for the most part is very helpful telling you how to get where you're going. However, if you're lookin for a really nice hotel with streets to stroll and shop, I suggest you do what we plan to do next time, which is stay in Sorrento. Yes, it is a more of a typical beach resort town, but it is gorgeous.”
