“My family and I stayed at the Occidental Grand in the Riviera Maya in June of 2008. The resort was nice and the grounds well maintained. The food was okay but lacked variety. The pools were very nice with plenty of space to accommodate the largest parties. The beach was not good. Man made lagoon did not provide the feel of being on the ocean. The staff should not be trusted! I had (on two separate occasions) items stolen from luggage and from my room. I had a $350 Sony digital camera stolen from my luggage upon check-in. It was not a top of the $480 and a cell phone stolen from my room. The money was in the room safe and the cell phone was in my luggage. When I reported the incident the Manager met me in my room and asked several questions. Then he had security proceed to search my personal belongings to make sure I was not fictitious with my claim. Before leaving he checked my access card reader and confirmed that the only people to gain access to my room was myself and the cleaning person. He informed me that I would have to take the situation up with the police in Playa de Carman, about a 15 min taxi ride away. He assure me he would take the appropriate action with the cleaning lady. I observed her cleaning the same set of rooms later that day. My advice is to either leave valuables at home or take them with you when you leave your room and do not let your luggage out of your site at check-in. They were more than happy to take our luggage when we arrived and tell us they will deliver it to our room after we check-in.”

“Just returned from a week at the X-caret Flamenco and it was fabulous. The hotel and grounds are very well kept even though the place is huge. Large tracts of jungle have been preserved, so you will see a lot of wildlife if you pay attention, esp. early in the morning. There are macaws all around the lobby pool, which is filled with fish you can feed. Get used to iguanas, geckos and other wildlife sharing the cobbled paths with you. Since the grounds are so large, they have very good shuttles which can get you to the beach or to the restaurants if your room is any distance away. Many activities are available; we did the yoga at the beach and it was a great experience. Bring a snorkel; the beach lagoon has some wonderful schools of fish that will swim right under you. Food was very good; we esp. enjoyed the oriental restaurant and the steakhouse. X-caret Park is an easy walk next door and is a great experience: big cats, manatees, turtles, tapirs, butterflies, exotic birds, Mayan ruins and a Mayan show. We like to walk, and there's a lot of walking to be had in this huge and lovely place! Service people were great, but you can't exchange money the desk, so get used to using pesos. We would recommend this place to anyone!”

“We stayed at the grand caret in march of 2006. The previous year we went to adventure spa palace. Over all I would say I enjoyed caret much more. It had allotted better atmosphere, great staff and location. We thoroughly enjoyed it and are planning on returning in 2007. The food was better at adventure but the difference in the atmosphere more than made up for it. Caret¿s buffet is very good, specialty restaurants aren't quite as good as I would have hoped. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone who wants to have that "tropical" feel to their vacation. Enjoyed the lagoon and shows at the caret park immensely.” 4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

“Fortunately we planned our vacation before the hurricane hit the Mexican Rivera. It is a very large resort, which required a lot of walking. After the first day of eating, we started to look for the long walk around. The rooms were roomy enough for my husband and 2 teen boys. Cool and comfortable, although we spent little time in the room. Meals were very good and plentiful. All meals are buffet style, with a different theme each night. There are 5-specialty restaurants that require reservations when you arrive. We went to 3 different specialty restaurants. The dinners were excellent. Men are required to wear pants and closed toe shoes to the specialty restaurants, otherwise it is casual dress. I had to purchase a pair of pants for my 15 yr old.. The resort is adjacent to Xcaret Park. Guests of the hotel get a 1-day free pass to the park, which is a short walk from the main buffet restaurant. I highly recommend you spend a day in the park. It is well worth it. The resort was clean and well kept, and the staff is friendly, helpful, and hard working There are many activities scheduled throughout the day. One can be occupied constantly, or you could relax and sleep the day away at the beach or any one of the pools. The beach was a little smaller than I expected but I never felt is was crowded. One complaint I do have is the mosquitoes at night. Bring bug spray with you. You will need it at the outdoor entertainment shows each night. We enjoyed our 8 days there, and would definitely go back. Ps, We used the hotel transport to and from the airport. It was cheaper than Orbitz offered, very professional, private and friendly.” 39 of 39 people found this review helpful.Amenities at Occidental Grand Flamenco Xcaret, Playa del Carmen
