  • The location was Great.
  • Staff particularly desk staff was snobby and unhelpful.

“The Location is top notch, it was clean, had all the amenities of Good European hotel. beds were comfortable and large ( which I appreciated after many nights in smaller B and B beds) but the check in staff was snooty and not helpful, the bell hop was very helpful more so than the desk staff. No breakfast included in our stay which we did not know and still don't know why. Would have been ok if we knew up front but we didn't.”

  • The view of the Castle and Scott Monument were excellent
  • Twin beds instead of double bed meant we slept badly both nights
    Cold beans for breakfast

“Double room ordered, single beds in room.
Overall state of room was tatty, crap tiling in the bathroom made showering feel dirty and towel warmer didn't work.
Even when the double beds where pushed together the join was still uncomfortable so 2 nights sleep where severely hindered.
Breakfast was cold on both days and very unsatisfactory. Cold fried breakfast is not the way to start the day.

Best part of the hotel was the view from the room but wouldn't stay there again. Definitely go to Edinburgh again though. Just not that hotel.”

  • It was very central and the room itself was spacious and the bathroom clean with hot water. Thats all i needed
  • Reception and stairwells could do with a lick of paint around the the edges but there seemed to be some maintenance work going on there durning the week so hopefully that will sort that out

“This hotel was very central and easy to find. I thought this would be important to anyone who is visting Edinburgh for the first time. Our room was spacious and warm and the bathroom was also satisfactory. Overall, i would recommend this hotel to anyone.”

  • Staff were friendly and efficient. The location is ideal and offered good value
  • Dining room cold.

“I was quite happy with the hotel and as I had read reviews prior to booking I was expecting the decor to be worse than it was.”

  • modern decor, central location, only 2 minutes from waverly station.
  • bathroom was freezing, hotel bar very small and quiet.

“we really enjoyed our night in the hotel. the staff were very friendly and helpful especially the man working on the reception desk during our stay. heater inside the room was great however there was a draft from the bathroom window which made the bathroom unbearably cold. great view of the castle from our 6th floor room. hotel lift only fits 4 people - a squeeze at that. overall we would highly recommend this hotel, and would be more than happy to stay there again.”

  • Nice room, friendly staff
  • Bit draughty, though it was exceptionally windy at that time

“We asked for a pleasant, quiet room and were not disappointed, the views were terrific. The evening meal in Cranstons was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. We booked this hotel because of the website reviews and would do so again.”

  • Very convenient to city centre.

“After checking out, I had to return to the front desk to get a receipt. This should have been provided automatically.

TV should be on a small table, it is very difficult to watch if siting or lying on the bed.

Towel warmer was not working. (not a big deal)”

  • Hotel was situated in a very good position for access to railway station and shops.
  • Only problem we found was that the lift to all floors was very small.

“Hotel was in need of decorating which was due to be undertaken in 2005, however the friendliness of the staff was second to none, nothing was too much trouble, they were a credit to the hotel i would certainly use this hotel on my next visit to Edinburgh.”

  • The light in the wardrobe was not working and neither was the heated towel rail. The cold water supply occasionally cut off for up to 30 seconds.

“The hotel was very much as I expected from the information on the Activehotels website.”

  • STEPS UP TO RECEPTION AREA. NO RAMP OR LIFT ACCESS

“IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THE RESTRICTED ACCESS I WOULD HAVE STAYED ELSEWHERE”

  • location was excellent
  • Lack of parking and a parking ticket issued whilst parked where the hotel porter had suggested

“Had a great stay in Edinburgh, will definately go again and will no doubt use Active Hotels a they were exceptionally good value compared to other online hotel providers.”
