“I stayed at the YMCA for 3 nights, everything was fine, the hotel was okay, not too bad neither good. The problem was when I returned home and got my credit card review. For my very surprise I found out that my credit card was used twice at the YMCA desk, one time with my authorization to pay the 3 nights and one more time that I didn't know that I was charged the amount of one extra night. Just to make it clear, it was used and taken at the same day I checked in, so no reason for charge as late check out, I checked in at the correct date, so no reason to pay extra charge for late check in. It was a very unpleasant experience, plus all the money that I had to spend, having my card hold and destroyed at my bank, paying charges to have a new card and etc. If you are going there, again just be careful.”

“As you walk into the Vanderbilt, you see the gym and it looks very clean and posh. But when you get to your room you realize they have spent all their money on the gym! I felt that the cleanliness was awful. There was only 2 showers for women per floor, and the shower curtains had broken, so we had to wear swim suits. The plug holes where full of hair and it was horrible. The floor was really slippery and dirty where you had to walk in with your shoes on because the carpets were crunchy. I would advise taking slippers, a dressing gown and swim wear! Also when you get in the lobby ask for the code number of the loose, as they didn't tell us and we couldn't get in until we found a cleaner. Also take a friend with you because the toilet doors got stuck to each other, and someone got trapped in the toilet, they did eventually get out because you can entrap yourself, but you feel safer with someone else. The rooms were tiny. My friends could not fit 2 of them and 2 suitcases in the room, so they had to sleep in another room. The top bunk bed doesn't feel safe, as it is wobbly and there is no safety bar across side of the bed, so you could fall from the top. The radiators were very noisy and often kept me awake. The pillows were horrible and felt like there were stones in it, as the foam had split up into lots of little hard bits. However, the location is very good as you can get everywhere in NY very easily, and is in walking distance of Times Square. Also, they give you new towels everyday and cups so you can brush your teeth, which is nice. If you don't mind squeaky beds and horrible showers then Vanderbilt is ok.”

“I stayed here July 19-22, 2007 and had a great experience. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive hostel, the Vanderbilt YMCA is a good choice. Please note that this is a hostel, not a hotel. Yes the rooms are small and the bathrooms are communal, but this allows the price to be low. Also note that because it's a YMCA, there is no added tax on the room rate, which can save you a lot of $. My room was cleaned and the bed made everyday, there were always fresh towels, and the staff was generally friendly. I had a problem twice with my room access card deactivating, but the staff cheerfully gave me a new one both times. There is a 24-hour security guard at the main entrance and there is a room for luggage storage. You can also use this before you check in or after you check out for $1 per bag per day - this is a major plus as there is literally no place to store luggage short-term in NYC since 9/11 (even the lockers at grand central have been removed). Bathrooms were cleaned each day and there are a variety of privacy options if you check out each floor. On my floor, there was a female shower room with two showers that locked from the inside and another shower in the bathroom that required a combination for entry. In the male bathrooms, there were only two open showers with no curtain or divider, but downstairs there were private male showers available.”

“We were looking for clean, comfy beds and reasonable prices. We found both here. Staff very accommodating and friendly. While the midtown address makes it sound centrally located, it's a bit on the far east side, so it was a bit more of a hike to all subway stops than we expected. Spent a lot of time on the shuttle train back and forth to Grand Central Station. If you don't plan to spend much time in your room, though, you can't beat it. We stayed on the top floor and it was quiet as could be.”
