  • Beautifully restored art deco building.
  • Most guests are business travelers and the public area always has the hum of business talk and is not relaxing.

“This is a beautiful hotel with great rooms and service. It is expensive. Most guests appear to be business travelers. If you like being around guests in business suits you can't go wrong but if you want a more relaxed atmosphere you won't find it here. It's at a great location; central park is across the street. The hotel is in a safe area well located for midtown activities.”

  • Beautiful place in a great location.
  • Loud, frequent thumping sound in heat system.

“Beautiful hotel in a great location. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Far more luxury than I could have hoped for at that price.”

  • Very comfortable room.
  • Expensive. No free wi fi, although for a fee there is internet.

“For a trip to Lincoln center or Carnegie hall, non New Yorkers may have to spend the night. We've tried the economy approach, with bad results. The Es house does not pretend to be a budget hotel, but you get a very comfortable room. The prices deterred us from eating on the premises, but there are wonderful restaurants nearby even at 7 on Sunday morning there was a place for a nice breakfast for 2 at about $15. There is a plasma screen TV in the room, but if you watch it, why are you in this city?”

  • Great location and great service.
  • Noise from the street can be heard in the room.

“Very good, but more soundproofing from street is required.”

  • The staff attention is outstanding and the room size is excellent for NY City.
  • I found the breakfast unnecessary expensive. Frankly, no argument could justify a not so special buffet at $33.00 or a glass of orange juice for $8.00.

“I dinned at the Essex hotel's restaurant about ten years ago when it was still called les celebrities I guess. After many visits to NY City and staying in more affordable hotels, My partner and I decided to reward ourselves by staying in more luxurious hotels in NY. We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria in the end of July and last week at the Essex house. We paid about the same rate and I must tell you readers, there's no comparison between these two hotels. Although the waldorf Astoria has its formidable history in the hotel scene of NY, The Jumeirah Essex House not only has history (it's one of most beautiful examples of American Art Deco landmarks) but also offers great comfort and amenities and a service difficult to rival in the city. The rooms are generously sized in comparison with most of the hotels at the same category. Well done managers and all the staff of this magnificent hotel! Oh yes, please review your breakfast menu. It seems to me that the menu was designed to cost the same price no matter if guests want only drink an orange juice a cup of coffee and some toasts or the full buffet which by the way does not justify the $33.00PP bill. I had the buffet and my partner had his usual a la carte grape fruit, tea and toast and we paid just as much as if we had both the buffet. Human beings don't like to be cheated even if they're millionaires. Charging fair prices is a courtesy!”

  • Great lobby, great rooms, excellent service.
  • Met all my exceptions.

“I have been traveling to NYC for almost 35 years and stayed in all the 4 and 5 star hotels. I was pleasantly surprised how beautiful the new renovations are and would highly recommend this to all my friends and company travelers. Bravo to the owners, management and staff.”

  • Safety and security-woman traveling alone.
  • Hotel exceeded my expectations - very comfortable.

“Initial impression was hotel of elegance and comfort. Staff was quite attentive and prompts with the few requests I made. I was traveling alone and felt very safe. Upon checking in, I was offered an upgrade which was unexpected and much appreciated. Incredible value and I would definitely visit this hotel again.”

Cleanliness:[9] • Staff:[10] • Location:[10]

  • Location was perfect, and staff was excellent.
  • Overpriced, tiny room, useless shower, no view, meals outrageously expensive and of indifferent quality.

“This hotel seems to rest on its location, location, location (which is hard to beat) and its staff, who are excellent. The room was tiny and cramped with an expansive view of the wall of an adjoining building. It is hard to describe how useless, frustrating and ill-conceived the gimcrack shower arrangement was. And breakfast for two, including coffee that tasted like iodine, cost about $80 (including tip). It might be good for those on an expense account, who can cough up for a reasonable room, but I will look elsewhere for my next romantic splurge in NYC.”

  • Excellent service, great beds, knew who we were and from which state.
  • Very minor problem with wallpaper in bathroom and shower--they fixed.

“Nice employees who really tried to assist in whatever way they could. Very helpful. Would return.”

“The hotel and staff were magnificent. The location is ideal on Central Park South - just minutes walk to 5th Ave shopping. It's pricey but you get what you pay for.”

  • The beds were the best ever! In fact, I am buying anew mattress because of my stay there!
  • Maids did not always leave hand towels, wash cloths.........

“Front desk staff was not that trained. I had to look at two rooms because the girl who checked me in was not sure of what she was telling me.”

Cleanliness:[9] • Staff:[8] • Location:[9]

  • Great location. Nice lobby. Huge bathroom.
  • No mattress pad!!! No TV express checkout.

“This hotel is in a great location on Central Park South. You are close to some of the essential attractions for a NYC visitor. The room was small, but clean. The linens seemed nice, but it's odd that there's no mattress pad on the bed. The bottom sheet easily slipped out of place and we were partially sleeping on the mattress.”

Cleanliness:[7] • Staff:[8] • Location:[10]

  • The bed linen was quite luxurious.
  • The carpet in the hallways was old and in end of replacement. Common areas were not well kept. The bathroom ceiling was peeling badly.

“Although the room was quite large, the hotel showed signs of disrepair. There was an odor in the hallways, peeling paint on the ceilings, room service trays were not picked up promptly and there were other minor signs of general disrepair. I understand a renovation is about to occur that may address these issues. The staff were quite helpful.”

Cleanliness:[7] • Staff:[7] • Location:[9]

  • Friendly staff.
  • Not good for business - expensive and undependable Internet access.

“A nice old hotel with comfortable beds. It was not satisfactory for business communications. Also, no ice machines (although there were ice buckets) or other self serve amenities. Everything was room service so expensive for tips. The "lower cost" restaurant is still very expensive ($150 for lunch for four!).”

  • Not applicable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

“Located on Central Park South, the Jumeirah Essex House is a perfect location from which one can easily explore all of Manhattan. My wife and I had a marvelous time and were exceedingly comfortable in our well-appointed room. We highly recommend this hotel.”

  • Location.
  • Quality of room was extremely poor.

“Great location. The hotel lobby is nice but, the rooms are terrible. The carpet is worn, the bathroom old and fixtures were cracked. I should have known when I could get this hotel at a discounted rate for a weekend, I was in for trouble with quality.”

“The staff was excellent, going far beyond the norm. My room was clean, however, not out of the ordinary. I expected the luxury of having my own coffee maker, without having to ask for room service. There was only one robe available. The beds were very comfortable and the lines were of high quality. I would say was pleased with the hotel, but it did not have the spark to make me want to return.”
