“Today is the last day there will ever be a Howard Johnsons on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. It is closing its doors, along with the Holiday Inn, to be renovated into what will be called the Chelsea. I have stayed at Howard Johnsons on the boardwalk since 1996. The staff was always pleasant and the rooms were clean. I guess since I am 48-years-old I can remember what Howard Johnsons was supposed to be. It was not a sleek casino type of place. It is a family hotel; a place you could bring the children and not have to worry about them acting like children. When I was a kid we used to go to Howard Johnsons just to have dinner. Then we would go home. I have stayed at bigger hotels on the boardwalk. There are none that can compete with the comfortable atmosphere of Howard Johnsons. I hope the owner of the Chelsea has the wisdom to rehire any of the staff who wishes to return after the renovation.”

“Good location, reasonable walking distance to most casinos. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Hotel was okay, very clean, but a little shabbier than I expected. Good buffet breakfast for reasonable price.”

“I think this hotel was horrible. The room was ridiculously small and I have never seen a bathroom like the one in this hotel. The duct taped shut windows bothered me, along with the fact that the air conditioner had only on or off as controls. Also, I had a friend trying to call me in my room. I discovered the reason I wasn't getting her calls was because the phone was dead. It looked like the line had been ripped out of the wall.”

“The hotel is very USED. It needs to be updated, especially the climate control system. The vents leaked all the time, causing the carpet to be wet, along with being very stained and dirty.”

“It was not a bad place to spend the night, but I wouldn't want to spend many waking hours in the room. Rather shabby, but the staff was friendly and helpful.”

“This hotel wasn't what I was expecting the outside of the hotel look old and the inside was old fashion. People came into the pool area to clean their shoes and buggy boards from the sand inside the pool. The room was alright but the bathroom was too small and old fashion.”

“This hotel is in poor condition for the money they are charging. There is smell through out the hotel that let's you know that this building is old. The two elevators are old and slow, the cafe is by all means what you would call a greasy spoon. The check in and check out lines are long with not enough staff (only 2, but only 1 working the front desk) This is a hole in the wall hotel.”

“This hotel was so tacky. I slept with all my clothes on. And the hotel had no HEAT.”

“This Atlantic City Howard Johnson destroys the brand name. The desk clerk forgot to give me a parking pass and gave me a key that did not work in my room. They could not put my parties close to one another. The first room we got had a huge blood stain on the carpet and the second room that we were switched to upon request had a broken toliet and the ceiling in the hallway outside was leaking. We ran into several people in the elevator that were switching rooms do to not working toliets, leaking ceilings, and stained items in the rooms. Did I mention that it was less than 40 degrees outside and went down to nearly 30 degrees over night but the hotel does not offer heat to its guest during the spring and summer months so we FROZE the entire weekend. The walls between rooms were thin where there were door contecting rooms (exvery room) and so I was kept up until all hours of the night due to the loud carring ons of the neighboring guest regradless of repeated calls to the front desk about the matter. The Bell Clerk did not even offer to take our bags to our rooms. To be fair the staff was as friendly as can be expected when half of your guest are complaining about something. I would not reccommend this hotel to anyone unless they can afford to spend a small fortune on a nasty grimmy awful hotel. ”

“The staff was very helpful. I went to bed at midnight, but did not think about people having a party until 3:00a.m. and people in their cars honking their horns. My room was by the road.”

“The room was not what I expected. The bathroom was not clean and that is the 1st place my wife looks. The toilet did not flush. Our room was against the main street and it was very loud throughout the night. ”

“I''ve stayed there before, so I knew what to expect. It''s not anything fancy, but it''s clean and in a good location. I still think they could stand to update the furniture, bathrooms, and interior decorations.”

“Rust, mold, unsavory characters in front of the hotel, chainlink fencing to secure the balconies. People hanging out in the hallways, a bathroom sink that was stopped up. Very disgusting! I had to brush my teeth in the tub because the sink was so gross.”

“We were in room 231 and the problems we found were:
faulty electric receptacle where the TV and coffee
pot were connected. Both connectors kept falling out
of the receptacle. Also there was no hot water in the
bathroom basin. Otherwise our stay was a wonderful
experience. I would go there again.”

“The price was $60 so we got what we paid for. But I wouldn't call it a notch below top.”
