“We checked into the Howard Johnson Express Inn in Ocean City, Maryland on 09/11/09 and checked out on 09/13/09. My wife and I had one room, and our two daughters had the other room. We also had our 8 month old granddaughter with us in our room. The night of 09/11/09 into 09/12/09 was a horrible experience since the fire alarms went off numerous times during the late evening into the early morning hours. Our sleep was totally disrupted for the night (which pretty much ruined our next day), we had to go up and down four flights of stairs numerous times during the night (carrying our grand baby), and our grand baby was very upset by all the noise and commotion each time (and could not sleep at all because of this). We told the night manager that we were considering looking for a new hotel around 2:00 AM in the morning, but he encouraged us to stay and said that the main manager during the day could surely work out a discount for us. However, when we met with the main manager, he said that since so many people wanted deep discounts, it was beyond his authorization to do so.”

“Don't let the photos of this place fool you, it is not as pretty or clean as it looks. While my family and I were there, the fire alarm went off 4 times; a fire alarm that could only be turned off each time by the Ocean City Fire Department which took about 15 minutes each time. This started at 8am, occurred again around 2pm, and twice in a row around 1am. We were told it might have something to do with the rain. (They aren't equipped to handle rain?) The man at the front desk had zero sympathy as a woman with an autistic child, who would not get out of the car because of the alarm, asked for her money back and to be checked out. He told her that he couldn't give her a refund and that she would need to call whoever she booked the room with. He wouldn't give her a receipt or any proof of what had occurred. He told the group that had formed in the lobby that we would all have to wait to talk to the morning manager. The morning manager somehow had less sympathy and offered no apology for what had happened. As we talked to other guests we were told that some rooms smelled of mildew, some were dripping with water, some had pools of water collected on carpets. And one couple said they were moved from a room that had been infested with fleas. Our room has a great view. That is the only good thing I can think of to say. Before the alarm situation, the staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. The rooms are dingy. I can't even stand to walk on the carpet with my bare feet. And the WiFi doesn't reach everywhere. Good luck to future guests. Don't bring any good expectations.”
