• Does not have vanity sink in bathroom.

“Wonderful historic hotel, enjoyed the Friday seafood and Saturday prime rib buffet both excellent in quality of the food at a reasonable price. I plan to return again before the end of the year.”

• Its, history and uniqueness, if you want something different this is it.
• It is still in restoration process, the roof concerned me a bit if there should be a large storm, and I don't think they use the top floor as of now.

“If you love history this is a beautiful piece of property being restored. I hope many people will use it as so many of our historic building are torn down just to build new. Staff was great, they had evening entertainment, and it is much closer to the marina and water than you think.”

• The bartender at the lobby bar was very nice.
• Roof was leaking, not on the beach, poor service.

“I am looking forward to going back after the renovation is complete in 2011. The beach club on the gulf has a wonderful restaurant. The setting and the food were great I have not had as good a steak at a restaurant in quite a long time beautiful sunset just tops it all off.”

• There are no vent fans or shelves in the bathrooms.

“This hotel was built in the late 1800's and looks like very little has been done to keep up with deterioration or modernization. I would advise avoiding this hotel in favor of any modern chain hotel. If a luxury resort is what you want in Clearwater, then go to the Don Cesar in Saint Pete Beach, just 10 minutes down the road. If you want Clearwater beaches, there are many hotels out on the island, both economy and luxury. If you want to save money, there are many local chain hotels. From the outside, the hotel looks like it is about to fall down. The paint is faded and peeling. The roof line is sagging. The roof shingles are missing in most places. Doors do not sit square. The pool had many missing tiles and there was a thick layer of scum on the tiles. Towels at the pool are smaller and thinner than most old worn-out bath towels in cheap motels on the interstate highways. I walked around the hotel and it looks very sad indeed. The tennis courts were uneven and water pooled everywhere (It is central Florida and rain is a daily occurrence, but it appeared that there was no effort to maintain the facilities.) Overall, it looks like this hotel would be best left to lumber salvagers. The hotel boasts having a great golf course, and when you drive up, there is a golf course right next to the hotel. But this is not their golf course. The hotel's golf course is a couple miles away. They do offer a shuttle. From the inside, the level of deterioration is very apparent. Paint is faded or peeling. Floors are sagging and creaking. Carpet is old, musty and there is an overall bad mold/mildew smell throughout the common areas. There is an indoor pool in the spa area that is not much better than the outdoor pool. The spa offers the whole range of services, but we did not use them, so I cannot comment. The rooms are deplorable. We asked to be moved from our original room because there was such dilapidation and the room stank of mold.”

• This hotel was steeped in history with a level of service I'd previously associated with a bygone era!
• The bathroom was dirty. Made me wish I had brought my own bathroom cleaning products along.

“There are intangibles at this hotel that were invaluable to me! I was reluctant to leave.”

• Large, adjoining rooms with closet large enough for crib, great outdoor pool, historic structure.
• Leaky roof.

“The hotel itself is beautiful, though in need of some repair (especially roof). It has an indoor and outdoor pool, both of which are large and beautiful, though the indoor is too hot. We were able to get adjacent rooms, which seems hard to get in modern hotels and that was great. The closet was a little room in itself and was perfect for a pack n play plus suitcase and so I could put the baby to sleep and still move about in the room. We had 5 boys <7 and never felt out of place or unwelcome.”

• Near a ghetto neighborhood.

“Beautiful old hotel with well maintained grounds. Hotel staff was friendly and very accommodating. You may want to think twice about leaving the grounds at night as the surrounding neighborhood is kinda ruff. Had some creaks and some of the hotel was rather dark. But what can you expect for a hotel over 100 years old. I highly recommend experiencing this hotel.”

“The whole time that we stayed I felt like we were the only ones in the hotel! It was amazing! The room's furniture was a bit dated, but everything was clean. The roof does have a tarp on it, and might be under repair. Overall, this is a beautiful hotel!”

“This was a great old hotel. The staff was friendly and very accommodating (we forgot our 18 month old's play pen they gave us one to use for free, my daughter also lost my cell in the room which the staff found after we left and they shipped it back to me very quickly for free). The pool was awesome. It was just a neat hotel to stay at and explore. A lot of history. The hotel is in need of restoration, which I am told is due to happen in September. The thing that has to be understood when staying here is that it was built in 1987. It is old, but that is the fun thing about staying here. Great experience in my opinion. I would recommend it to anyone who does not want to stay in your run of the mill hotel and who would enjoy the hotel being apart of your vacation experience.”

• The character and history of it.
• The noise from others in hallway in the middle of the night.

“This hotel is filled with history and character. It is unfortunate that upkeep was ignored so long. They are doing a 3 year renovation starting May 2009; I look forward to going back after that is complete to see it in its full beauty and glory again! There were a large number of 'late teens' there during our stay that were loud during the night. This made the stay less enjoyable.”

• Grand old hotel away from the bustle of tourism.
• Needs major renovation, but then I couldn't afford.

“Grand old hotel in need of updates, which are scheduled to begin this year or next. Hotel is to be shut down for 3 years for a multi-million dollar renovation. Now is a great time to visit before it gets priced out of budget.”
