“This was the host hotel for our small conference. The location was ideal, the staff was wonderful and friendly (even made last minute copies for me at the height of check-in time), the down comforters were very nice, meeting rooms were big enough to hold our board meeting in, as well as prepare documents for our conference attendees. I recommend this hotel for meeting planners as well as visitors to the Kalamazoo and Portage areas.”

“The hotel was nice especially for the price. It was a bit of a distance from restaurants but close to there highway. Overall I would recommend this hotel.”

“Everything with this hotel is on par with a Best Western Inn. The free breakfast is nice, but the morning I was eating there, the batter machine for the waffles was broken. The fitness room equipment looks like it was picked up at garage sales. It had a cheap exercise bike, treadmill and stair machine. The free weights were a set of 40, 20, 10 and 5 lbs dumbbells. Who ever picked this stuff out didn't exercise themselves.”

“Do not and I repeat do not stay at this hotel. They do not have proper staffing that is informed on how to operate hotel equipment. We got our room checked in then when returning could not get back into our room. They made us stay in another room with none of our stuff. We were told later that they new there was a problem and never addressed fixing the door lock. At 3:55 in the morning there was a knock on the door and a note slid in that our door was fixed as if this was a remedy. I would never stay nor recommend this hotel to anyone. The staff was rude and no accommodating.”

“Normally with PL a 2.5 is usually a Marriott Courtyard, Residence Inn, etc. This was well below what I have stayed in as a 2.5 star.”

“This hotel may have been nice when it opened 20+ years ago but it is very tired and dirty now. I would not recommend it to anyone who cares about staying in a nice hotel with your family. The soda and ice machines were broke. Our beds were worn out and light bulbs were missing in at least two fixtures. This hotel should not be any higher than a one star hotel.”

“This one was predictably uncomfortable (bed hard etc, not enough pillows) and had the old air conditioner you'd expect at a Days Inn or Super 8 Motel.”

“Nothing extraordinary here. I hate the iron being screwed to the ironing board on the wide end - it makes it unusable. Bed was ok, shower was ok. Maybe a star and a half, but not two stars.”

“The room itself was terrible. It was dirty, there was actually food inside the vents on the air conditioning unit. The bathroom light didn't work (and after bringing it to the attention of the front desk and a promise to have it fixed, we still spent our entire stay going to the bathroom in the dark and taking showers in the dark). The wallpaper border was peeling of the wall. We were nervous to actually sleep on the sheets. we were on a non-smoking floor next to a room of smokers. This was also brought to the attention of the front desk. The gentleman working told me "maybe they are smokers". yeah, well, not on a non-smoking floor they shouldn't be! It was a terrible hotel. Terrible staff and in a pretty bad area of Kalamazoo.”

“Considerably nicer than most Best Westerns. Appearance of recent renovations, a pleasant surprise. Clean grounds and property, staff, small but responsive. TV reception poor. Decent room for the price.”

“Good-Internet connectivity, bed, accommodations bad-the desk chair has a broken right arm rest and a huge hole in the seat that looks like it was originally cigarette burned. The room has a "freshener" smell designed to cover up smoke, but it is a non-smoking room. These things are inconvenient. When I brushed my teeth, I discovered that the cold water, that I had been drinking without checking, was brown tinted. I let the water run to see if it was just an anomaly, but it remained a constant brown tinted water. Needless to say, it made me nauseous. This one factor will keep me from ever staying here again.”

“Some of the rooms at Best Western - Kalamazoo have the old standard hotel quilt bedding, but some have very nice "down" comforters and soft blankets. The king-bed rooms have a comfortable recliner and table that the queen-bed rooms do not. The nicer desks are also in the king rooms. Refrigerators are not standard in the rooms unfortunately and only a limited number are available for $10 extra per night. The old air conditioners are okay (unless you like to really chill the room), but the new digital air conditioners are poorly designed -- they adjust to a selected temperature, but take their temperature readings based on the outside air, not your room temperature. This makes it impossible to cool your room down, if the night is cool (but your room is still hot). This is a -major- problem if you don't want to open your window because you are on the first floor (safety) or have allergies (during the spring). The showers are nice. The sink counter area is extremely small and poorly designed. The toilet paper is not sandpaper, but far from nice. The soap is standard motel fare. The shampoos are the shampoo/conditioner blend instead of a separate conditioner (really important to some). The TV picture quality seemed rather poor, but was watch able. The staff was very courteous at all times. The complimentary breakfast is rather nice. The highlight is the malted batter waffles you can make yourself (pre-mix, but high quality waffle makers). Rest of breakfast items (same every day) include sausage, SOS (meat gravy on biscuits), pre-made French toast you put in the toaster, toast, bagels, cold hard-boiled eggs, coffee, orange juice, milk, cereals, fruit, pastries (they run out fast), and small muffins (not very good). If you want a donut, head down the street to Sweetwater's (ask at the desk) for some of the best in the country.”
