  • They offered continental breakfast and it was close to the highway.
  • It was terribly dirty, front desk staff unhelpful, unsympathetic.

“The room itself was terrible. It was dirty, there was actually food inside the vents on the air conditioning unit. The bathroom light didn't work (and after bringing it to the attention of the front desk and a promise to have it fixed, we still spent our entire stay going to the bathroom in the dark and taking showers in the dark). The wallpaper border was peeling of the wall. We were nervous to actually sleep on the sheets. we were on a non-smoking floor next to a room of smokers. This was also brought to the attention of the front desk. The gentleman working told me "maybe they are smokers". yeah, well, not on a non-smoking floor they shouldn't be! It was a terrible hotel. Terrible staff and in a pretty bad area of Kalamazoo.”

  • Close to highway, good continental breakfast.
  • Too far from the university that we were visiting.

“Overall very clean, good breakfast, nice pool area. A bit out of the way from Kalamazoo proper, but convenient to the highway which helped.”

  • Better than we expected from a Best Western in general.
  • Towels were economy , and minimal quantity, walls between pretty thin.

“Considerably nicer than most Best Westerns. Appearance of recent renovations, a pleasant surprise. Clean grounds and property, staff, small but responsive. TV reception poor. Decent room for the price.”

  • Internet connection was good, bed was comfortable.
  • The room smelled like freshener from smoke, and had brown tinted cold water.

“Good-Internet connectivity, bed, accommodations bad-the desk chair has a broken right arm rest and a huge hole in the seat that looks like it was originally cigarette burned. The room has a "freshener" smell designed to cover up smoke, but it is a non-smoking room. These things are inconvenient. When I brushed my teeth, I discovered that the cold water, that I had been drinking without checking, was brown tinted. I let the water run to see if it was just an anomaly, but it remained a constant brown tinted water. Needless to say, it made me nauseous. This one factor will keep me from ever staying here again.”

  • New bedding in some rooms is 3-star quality. Recliners in King rooms are excellent.
  • Bedding quality varies room to room. Air conditioner not working.

“Some of the rooms at Best Western - Kalamazoo have the old standard hotel quilt bedding, but some have very nice "down" comforters and soft blankets. The king-bed rooms have a comfortable recliner and table that the queen-bed rooms do not. The nicer desks are also in the king rooms. Refrigerators are not standard in the rooms unfortunately and only a limited number are available for $10 extra per night. The old air conditioners are okay (unless you like to really chill the room), but the new digital air conditioners are poorly designed -- they adjust to a selected temperature, but take their temperature readings based on the outside air, not your room temperature. This makes it impossible to cool your room down, if the night is cool (but your room is still hot). This is a -major- problem if you don't want to open your window because you are on the first floor (safety) or have allergies (during the spring). The showers are nice. The sink counter area is extremely small and poorly designed. The toilet paper is not sandpaper, but far from nice. The soap is standard motel fare. The shampoos are the shampoo/conditioner blend instead of a separate conditioner (really important to some). The TV picture quality seemed rather poor, but was watch able. The staff was very courteous at all times. The complimentary breakfast is rather nice. The highlight is the malted batter waffles you can make yourself (pre-mix, but high quality waffle makers). Rest of breakfast items (same every day) include sausage, SOS (meat gravy on biscuits), pre-made French toast you put in the toaster, toast, bagels, cold hard-boiled eggs, coffee, orange juice, milk, cereals, fruit, pastries (they run out fast), and small muffins (not very good). If you want a donut, head down the street to Sweetwater's (ask at the desk) for some of the best in the country.”

  • Very friendly at the front desk.
  • Arrived later, they were doing some work outside which left dust.

“Hotel is good. First time the other guest I booked in a room had some problems with clean towels. Overall, the hotel is good for business travelers.”

  • Location.
  • Worn out.

“I would never stay here again. New sheets do not make a new hotel. The basic property is worn out, the staff minimally effective, the exercise room had no tread mill, and the clientele there were worse than the hotel!”

  • Good location, closer to restaurants.
  • Beds is not good, not much space in the room.

“In Chicago area, 2.5 star hotels are much better than this place. It needs to be cleaned. The clock does not work in the room.”

  • Nothing.
  • Everything it was an awful weekend.

“I spent a lot of money on this weekend for my daughters Birthday. I even ended up renting another room at full price. There was so much chlorine in the pool. It ruined 5 swimsuits and girls had chemical burns and ruined hair. I will never go back to this hotel and am considering legal action.”

  • Nothing!
  • The pool was over chlorinated ruined all our swimsuits and everyone was uncomfortable all weekend.

“The staff was rude and unhelpful. There was an electrical fire and the pool had too much chlorine in it and ruined all our swim suits. Also, some girls hair was ruined. I only received 40% off my bill and the money for the swim suits back. I feel I should have been given all my money back. I am still dealing with angry parents over this. It ruined my daughters Birthday.”

  • I liked the bathroom set up, it was very spacious.
  • The heater/air conditioner appeared to act up at times.

“This was a nice place to stay if you're looking for an above average hotel in the Kalamazoo area. It is an attractive hotel with clean rooms and a friendly staff.”

Cleanliness:[8] • Staff:[10] • Location:[8]

  • Friendly service.
  • The air quality was poor.

“Overall, this is a nice hotel. However, I did not sleep through the night because I was so incredibly dry. 4 days later, I am still itching all over because the humidity in the hotel was non existent. I have never had a problem with dry skin or falling asleep in any hotel. However, I only slept for about two hours and my entire body was miserably dry.”

Cleanliness:[4] • Staff:[1] • Location:[4]

  • It was outdated and the staff smoked with the front doors open that made the lobby stink.

“The hotel needs to be updated. It had the smallest shower stall created and it did not have a shower curtain liner. I had to turn sideways to shower or the shower curtain would have been stuck to me. The front desk people and some other employees were smoking out front of the hotel and propped the front door open. A very unattractive and unpleasant way to meet your guests. My wife and I also smelled like smoke as soon as we walked into the lobby from our rooms.”

  • The staffs were nice.
  • I did not like anything they had nothing I was put into a room with a king and had asked for two beds.

“This hotel had no extra anything including blankets and pillows! The non smoking floors were filled with smoke. My child has asthma and it was hard to deal with we did end up sleeping in the SUV for a little while because people were smoking. I had a nonsmoking room. I feel ripped off I paid for a room I did not get to use. Because of all of the smoke.”

  • Great, friendly staff.
  • Terribly old, awful fitness room/equipment.

“Good location, but very outdated and old. Staff is totally awesome and friendly, however, and as helpful as can be. Fitness equipment in poor shape, room was very clean but bed is old/hard and decor needs to be updated.”

  • Location and price.
  • Cleanliness. We found bugs in the beds in the morning when we awoke.

“Bugs in the bed, TV remote volume did not work, requested 3 extra towels and was only given two and they were still damp. No towels at the pool, sauna controls were broken, breakfast discontinued at 10a.m on Sunday - other hotels extends to 11am on weekends.”

  • Animals, stains on sheets, view of large shrubs and parking lot, dark dingy room.

“Our room smelled like animals, there were stains on the sheets; there was no view except of an overgrown shrub outside the window. Very dissatisfied.”
