“It was a quaint hotel. Considering the location the price was fair. It would have been nice to see fewer cosmetic flaws in floors, walls, decor, etc. If you are not looking to spend a lot of time in your hotel room this will suffice. If you are looking to spend a lot of time in your hotel room it might be worth a little more money to stay somewhere nicer.”

“Excellent location being only one block off Michigan Avenue, next to John Hancock Center and Water Tower Place and two blocks from Lake Michigan. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Only negative thing the entire weekend was the fact only 1 elevator was working and that one was very slow itself.”

“Hotel has great potential, needs massive renovation, if you can overlook peeled paint broken shades on the windows outdated carpet the location makes up for everthing. No ice / vending machines, must get ice behind desk.”

“Good location for downtown Chicago, but rude front desk staff, and very unhelpful. Slow elevators, expensive parking, they charged for coffee and we didn't realize it. It was very expensive too. Overall, disappointed, staff was rude!”

“A great location in chicago, 1 block from the Hancock center. A nice suite with living room, eating nook and bedroom. The hotel is nice but showing it's age, could use some attention to the paint and carpeting. The refinish on the bathtub could use a redo too.”

“We had read some negative reviews about The Raphael. We were satisfied for the price we paid. We found it to be clean and comfortable, although the bathroom fixtures could use some updating, as well as the general decor of the rooms. The location was great! We would stay again.”

“although conveniently located in a quiet area, this hotel shows its age: only 1 ice machine (at the front desk); extremely slow elevator, flaking paint in the bathroom, only one speed on the air conditioner fan. in the past, has exceeded my expectations with value lodging. this time i was disappointed.”

“They say the price we paid for the Rafael was fairly inexpensive for the area. I was not pleased with the Rafael. The rooms were not clean, dirt in the corners, there was a hair specimen stuck to the bathroom wall, one of our beds was being held up by a pair of 2*4's. We were fortunate that the Service elevators barely worked, due to the fact that the main elevators were broken. Due to the dissatisfaction of many of the other customers staying at this specific hotel, I questioned a few of the employees and many agreed they should have gotten a job at the Holiday INN. They should change the name of the hotel, Because Rafael Hotel sounds fancy, and the only thing fancy about this hotel were there rediculously overpriced service charges, for example continental breakfast $6.99. You can't just park your car, you have to pay $38.00/day for valet parking. I do have to give credit to the employees working there, they were kind, I feel bad for them having to work in this place being subjected to a poorly functioning building.”

“Not the Ritz by any means, but for price, it is a great deal for where it sits ... (a block or so off the Mile and a block or so from the lake) ... unfortunately, it appears that it will be changing hands and going Condo, according to an article in the Sun-Times that I read while staying at the hotel.”

“The phone in the room didn't work and there was no towels available on the first day. The rooms were very dated. (e.g. water stains on the ceiling.) The motel is under renovation. Excellent location.”
