“Wow. This is a fantastic place to stay. As other reviews have noted. Eat somewhere else. Otherwise this is perfect. I have traveled extensively, and this is one of my all time favorite spots. I must note I love to be outside and to fish. I ordered a Mojito at the bar and they actually went outside while I waited and got fresh mint from their herb garden. The staff is pleasant and the views of the bay are breathtaking. There is a great Italian restaurant just outside of town in Fairhope that was wonderful. We had dinner in the fine dining restaurant at the hotel and it was, I hate to say it, bad. One last note, my husband smokes and there are not any smoking rooms that I am aware of, but there are rooms that have balconies. Well, we were on the ground floor and a spark set the pine straw on fire. I am talking about a real fire. We were about to mess up our pants kind of fire. We took water from the bathtub to the pine straw repeatedly, and filled every thing available to get it out. This was a fire that was apparently big enough to be called in to the hotel staff. Their response was a gentleman rode over on a golf cart to check it out. He was very kind and gracious. It was a large enough fire that we took photos of the area. My stay there was so wonderful. I have seriously thought about looking for property in Fairhope. This is a beautiful place. They had a fabulous spa, bicycles, swings where you could just sit and read a book. This place, aside from the not so good restaurants, was one of the most perfect places you could imagine. Now, if you are looking for city life, look somewhere else. Otherwise, it is perfect.”

“This is a great place for kids. There are several organized kids activities throughout the day (weekly schedule is published and placed in rooms). In addition, the pool is great, plus you can use bikes, kayaks, sail boats, etc.”

“This hotel was grand indeed! The location of the hotel was so relaxing. We requested an inside room, but were delighted to find that we were upgraded to a Jr. suite that was right on the point. We were visiting during Memorial Day weekend, so we really felt blessed to be upgraded to such a wonderful room and view. Our suite had water views from every window and the layout of the rooms was perfect with a separate bedroom and sitting room (featuring a loveseat/sleeper, which was very comfortable for our 13 year old son.). The BR had a king size bed with a very comfy mattress, and a down comforter. It even featured a large closet, which is very rare in hotels these days. The bathroom was small, but had all the amenities we could want. All the staff was so nice from the gatekeeper to the maids! It was much better than home with so many activities to enjoy. Our son thought the pool was wonderful until we explored the grounds and found so much more to do. We loved riding the catamarans. (Can you believe they were free for an hour each day?) We paid $20 to have one of the guides give us a sailing lesson and it was money well spent. You could also make use of the kayaks for an hour for free. They have croquet, horseshoes, ping pong tables, a putting green, card games, and bikes (free rental for one hour a day, then $10 an hour afterwards), and they'll even provide you with fishing gear and a free bucket of bait, too. Take your tennis and golf equipment to enjoy the courts or the greens. (They will rent equipment, too.) Be sure to look at the daily recreational schedule that is delivered outside your door each morning. You can take a horticultural tour of the grounds, a tour of the chef's garden, a bike ride to the Civil War Cemetery, play UNO with other guests, and have an opportunity to parade around the grounds with the crew that fires the cannon each day at 4 p.m. to commemorate war veterans. Although, you'll find it very hard to leave the comfort of the swings or your lounge chair on the beach. Yes, it will be very difficult to leave the hotel grounds, but you won't want to miss visiting the lovely town of Fairhope, either. When you get to Fairhope, stop by the visitor center for a brochure/map of the shops and businesses in Fairhope, pick up the local restaurant menus, and visit their clean rest rooms. Sign the visitor book, and they will mark your hometown on their wall map. If you're visiting on Thursday, don't miss the downtown market! Guy (host of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives on the Food Network) recommends eating lunch at Panini Pete's in the French Quarter and so do we. The prices were good; the food was plentiful, and tasty, too. When they suggest cookies or beignets go ahead and try them, you can always walk off the (very delicious) calories while you visit the wonderful shops of Fairhope. Families with kids will love Papa's Pizza (can you believe we paid $14.99 for an extra large 16 in. 3 topping pizza!) It's not a fancy place, but it was very interesting, quite clean, and the pizza was delicious! Buck's Diner was a quiet and refreshing place for dinner. They offered a meat and 2 veggies plate that was good. We loved their fried green beans appetizer, too. It was a little more expensive for dinner, but my husband says that the macaroni and cheese made it all worthwhile. Their sign says open 'til, but when we called, they said they're usually open 'til 9 or 10 p.m. As for the shops, we found it difficult to leave the comfort and convenience of the Page and Palette book store. You could find wonderful snacks in their cafe/coffee shop, as well. If you're here during the week, watch for their art classes. This hotel was so relaxing that we didn't even need the spa. We really could have stayed longer. There was so much to do that we couldn't fit it all in to our 3 day stay. We will definitely visit again very soon.”

“Great resort with many activities for all ages every day. Facilities are top notch. Only negative was that hotel employees did not seem up to Marriott level. Lifeguards were wearing sweats.”

“The hotel has everything you need with an air of by-gone days. One is transported to a time when life was "grand," but you do not have to be formal. It is an excellent place for someone single, a romantic couple hideaway, or a playground for families. The golfing is one of the best. It is the perfect place to be.”

“Stayed 3 days in June. The grounds are beautiful, beds are a dream. Food is very expensive. Ate at the salt water grill, the food was at best terrible, Rosemary chicken (dry and tough as if it had set all day) burgers burnt. Two children & 2 adults bill was 85.00 and none was worth eating. Don't try complaining all I got was a sorry. Other than the food the stay was good but too pricey for what they offer.”

“Stayed here for 3 nights in early July. Being from California, the heat and humidity was a bit crazy! Resort was beautiful, Great old buildings and nice beaches. Pool complex was great, the main pool was a bit overwhelming though with all the kids. There is a 21 and older only pool and area, however, some guests apparently didn't feel that these rules applied to them and nobody was really enforcing it. The Grand dining room was an excellent choice for dinner. There new Wellington was great. Wine list was nice as well for being so far from Napa. First night we had a room that was not facing the bay, it felt tight and kind of small. Next morning we asked to switch to a nicer room and were able to do so for no extra charge. This was a bay view room which had a nice balcony on it. Overall this was a beautiful resort with all of the resort amenities that you would expect from a Grand Marriott. Very nice!”

“A lovely setting, rooms furnished beautifully, and friendliest staff ever. Prices too high for those not playing golf or tennis (resort fees should vary accordingly), food and drink around the pool too expensive for what is offered (margarita in a paper cup was $8.50!). Kids loved the pool, bedding was very nice, rooms dark, but noise came through from adjacent rooms.”

“Everything was wonderful until the second day when the maid did not clean our room. The manager sent for someone ASAP and she did not do her job. And that was the last impression left with my family and myself.”

“It is no accident the Grand has been a favorite destination for those in the know for the last 160 years. The place has been renovated and updated after recent hurricanes, and it is come back better and stronger. The pool is amazing. The grounds are breathtaking. Great tennis courts. A great place to get away from it all, and charming Fairhope is temptingly nearby.”
