  • The staff was very helpful and courteous.
  • Best to use the hotel van service rather than worry about parking a car.

“This is a wonderful, historic hotel with polite and helpful staff. We had a great stay there. Be sure to search for the best rates available.”

  • many ammenieties listed were not available

“Although the hotel itself is a beautiful historic building, our stay overall was not a good one. Many very basic ammenities were not in working order. Our mini fridge was not working, cd player and alarm were not working, 3 phones and the only one that worked was in the bathroom, we requested wakeup calls 2 days and never recieved a call, elevators were being used for moving furniture and it took almost 20 min one day to come to our 9th floor. We were informed that hotel was closing for renovation when we arrived and had to be transfered to a different hotel on our last day. We were told that we were being transfered to one hotel and made arrangements to meet with the people we were visiting and then at the last min. transfered to a different hotel. Overall our stay at the hotel was a nightmare. We felt that we would have been treated better at hotel 6.”

  • I was pleased to see this hotel before the major renovation. It is a classic grand hotel.

“Does not apply because the Grant Hotel will be completely different after it reopens.”

“It is a nice place but the pictures posted on the Internet do not show the real picture of the place. One could be fooled by the pictures. NO swiming room or something to suplement it.”

“Good location. Hotel appears to have been renovated 10 years ago and then not touched. Bathroom was small and not that clean”

Cleanliness:[9] • Staff:[10] • Location:[9]

  • Very large room, bathroom, two closets, clean, good location in town.
  • The hotel is scheduled for major renovations so some of the lamps in the room did not work or were in need of repair.

“Enjoyed our stay at the US Grant, would go back. A very good buy for the rate.”

Cleanliness:[5] • Staff:[6] • Location:[9]

  • The location couldn't be beat; lobby was lovely.
  • Room furnishings were shabby, plumbing was horrible, pipes screeched.

“The hotel was past its prime. There is no doubt that it was once a grand and elegant hotel with richly appointed rooms and a feeling of elegance. That was then. Now once you get past the lobby, the hotel is shabby and dingy. The halls are bare with light spots on the peeling wallpaper where paintings might have hung. The rooms are spacious, but in both rooms we stayed (they moved us because they didn't have a non-smoking room the first night) the furniture was chipped and scratched, the curtains were torn and stained, the comforters had burn marks, the tubs had mold in the grout, the luxurious bathrobes touted on the website were nonexistent, and the plumbing was awful. There seemed to be air in the pipes as through the night randomly there would be a howling as people in various rooms flushed or turned on the sink. The staff was minimal and the few times we called the front desk with questions, they had no answers. ”

  • Nice room, furniture and bed. Location was great.
  • Due to plumbing problems I could not stay there the first two nights and was transferred to a two star hotel.

“I was very disappointed when I arrived at the hotel only to be told that my room was not available due to plumbing problems and that arrangements had been made elsewhere.”

  • Great older hotel. Friendly staff, great location.
  • One rude reservation agent named Tommy.

“This is a grand old hotel. It is getting readt to go through renovation starting 30 January but will reopen on the 4th of July if able. WE only had breakfast once in the restaurant but it was excellent. Nice bagle store/coffee shop out front. Right across the street from Horton Plaza and if you can't find it there, you don't want it. ”

Cleanliness:[9] • Staff:[2] • Location:[9]

  • The location and the heritage of the hotel
  • Rude front desk

“We had a hotel room for two nights that happened to be reserved during the california mudslides/floods. The highways out of Santa Barbara were closed. There was no way for me to get to san diego the first night. I called the hotel and they said it was no problem and that they would plan on us for the second night. When I arrived, my reservation was cancelled and the front desk clerk was not helpful at all. After getting my group together, I went back to the front desk and asked to speak to a manager. ”

  • Room was clean and comfortable. Hotel was in a good, convenient location.
  • Hot water was not able to get hot enough. Expensive parking charge for guests.

“Old, classic hotel in good location. Convenient to Horton Plaza, and the Gas Lamp area. Easy to walk to downtown attractions.”

  • The U.S Grant is in the heart of the Gas lamp District! A great spot!
  • The windows are old, moldy, and thin. You can hear the noise from the street all day and night.

“The hotel is in a great location, but is not for the light sleeper. The noise from the street is loud and constant. The staff was great, but the elevators were broken and we had to use the service elevator which took a long time.”

Cleanliness:[9] • Staff:[9] • Location:[9]

  • Excellent location at Horton Plaza & Gas lamp district.
  • Needs renovation but still very clean.

“This was a grand old hotel in an excellent area next to Horton Plaza and the Gas lamp district and only a short walk to the bay. While the hotel was very clean, it definitely needs the renovation that starts on 2/1/05. Would recommend this hotel highly.”
