• Friendly & helpful staff. Comfortable beds & very clean.
• Outdated & unattractive furnishings in room.

“Excellent location close to Union Square but far enough away to avoid the noise & rush of Union Square. Located right on cable line next door to Mark Hopkins & across the street from the Fairmont. Very pleasant, friendly, & helpful staff. The room was very clean, beds comfortable. I would definitely recommend this hotel & the only reason I would say it is a three star hotel rather than a four star is due to the outdated & somewhat ugly furnishings in the room. If you can get past the furnishings, & it is worth getting past them, it is a great place to stay. The hotel is currently in the process of refurbishing & once that is complete I'm sure it will absolutely be a four star hotel.”

• We ordered our own car lobby bar no atmosphere.

“The location is difficult because it is located on the top of the hill, so if you want to walk, which we do, it got real difficult and we are in good shape. We took a cab once, just to get up the street two blocks. The restaurant has not atmosphere and same is lacking for hotel bar lobby. There is no gift shop, but they did give you water for free if you asked for it. They don't advertise they give water for free, you have to ask for it. They are renovating it so lets see how it looks after. We were put on the second floor and had no view. I would expect it to be romantic if you had a high room. I think you can find better value. I have stayed at many hotel is SF. Having said that the courtyard is very nice, it's clean and the people are friendly. I would place this hotel at the top of my B list.”

• The cable cars are a bit noisy, but that's not a fault of the hotel.

“We had an amazing stay. The staff was super helpful. We were there to celebrate my birthday and asked for a dinner recommendation. Top notch service!”

• Great Location. Friendly and helpful staff.
• Hotel was undergo renovation. Lost electricity one day late in the evening. Hotel provided glow sticks. Rooms dated, under renovation.

“I would stay at this hotel again after the renovation is completed. Great location.”

• Location, walk outside and jump on the Cable Cars.
• Parking is outrageous (like all hotels in SF!) Needs a "real" bar.

“Great location on Knob Hill. Walk out the front door and jump on the cable cars. Many rooms have no view at all. Parking, like all hotels in the City, is outrageous! Nice hotel but they need a "real" bar and a more casual restaurant for breakfast and lunch.”

• Hilton. Very friendly and romantic.
• Ramada. Service was not good and so as their service the Hilton (Sanford) was excellent including there service overall I enjoyed my stay with them.

“Hilton (Sanford), this hotel and their service was great I will love to stay there whenever I get to go there. People friendly and room nice and cozy. I just love it there I will recommend it to anyone.”

• Trolley noise outside of our room.

“Wonderful stay. Getting our car from valet service not an issue, took about 10 minutes, I imagine it may take longer around busier times of the year. The room was comfortable, spacious & clean.”

• Difficult to get to other locations.

“Significant construction work under way. Plan on extensive use of cabs. No easy access to subway or bus. It's close to cable cars. Translation: good for tourists, not business visitors. Even finding an inexpensive out-of-hotel breakfast location was very difficult. Hotel restaurant way too expensive.”

• Free car service to financial district.
• Room was dated and bed too soft.

“Hotel is located on Nob Hill, so be prepared to walk up steep hills if traveling by foot. Lobby has a nice bar area to get a quick bite. The hotel does not have a gym on its premises, but you can pay a small amount for the gym across the street.”

“This is not a four star hotel. My room was on the second floor, the hotel had half of it under construction, and the staff refused to move me to a reasonable spot. My room was on the second floor, overlooking an alley and sadly the loading dock. At 4:00 AM each morning, trucks would rumble in with back-up alarms wailing.”

“This hotel is in a great location in SF, within walking distance to nice neighborhoods as well as entertainment. The decor is much worn, and the room was marginally clean. But the property is undergoing renovation. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.”

“The rooms are a little small and old fashioned but are none the less very comfortable. We were lucky we had no one in adjoining rooms otherwise I think noise may be an issue.”

• Hotel is undergoing renovation. Photos on website of the rooms are not what you get!

“Check in was at 3 got there shortly after 4, but was told our room was not ready (not until 5pm). Asked for a 1pm checkout, which was granted. Entrance is like a motor court motel not at all like a 4 star hotel. Hotel is undergoing a renovation, so the room you think you are getting on the website is not what you actually get. Dated furnishings, a view of the "courtyard" and parking lot, but the room was clean, and the bed linens were very nice. I have stayed in 3 star hotels that were much more luxurious than this. Definitely not worthy of 4 stars.”

• Location was great.
• Mildew on shower, stains on floor, wallpaper and door.

“Had I paid more than I did I would have been very upset. There were stains on the furniture, the floor and the walls. There was mold between the shower tiles. I was able to wipe some of it off with a wash cloth so it shouldn't be too hard to clean. The bed was great and you can see the TV from the bed if you pull out the shelf in the armoire and swivel it on its base. I'm not sure the heat or air was working. Employees were great and helpful in a way.”
