• Great coffee, table books about classic cars and other things in the lobby.
• Walls were paper thin! Could hear everything in the next room.

“The beds were comfortable, the hotel let us check in very late, and I slept like a log until the guests in room next door turned on their TV and hairdryer. Walls are incredibly thin! I heard parking is a whopping $30, but we had our car parked elsewhere.”

• Friendly staff, clean and attractive - very European styling.
• Only valet parking.

“Only good things to say about Hotel Carlton - staff was extremely friendly and helpful and had great suggestions. Room itself had a very European style to it - personally loved the walk in closet and the bathroom was clean and styled well.”

• Absolutely nothing, nada.
• Everything.

“Small dirty rooms, poor service, noisy beyond belief. Rooms full of unmanaged kids who partied all hours. Security was unable to calm them down. Sirens going off all night. Do not recommend this to anyone.”

• Friendly staff, almost like a boutique hotel.
• Tiny bathroom and may not have been best location.

“For the price the hotel was perfect. I liked the eclectic decor and the staff exceeded my expectations in friendliness. I felt like I was in Europe.”

• The room was decorated well and it was very clean.
• No parking is available. Must pay for valet parking.

“My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It was nicely decorated and very clean. There were many coffee shops nearby and it was a short walk to Union Square and trolley stops. I would definitely recommend this hotel to any traveler.”

• It was modern and contemporary. I loved that about it!
• It had a bright neon sign out front, so it made me think it was going to be sleazy!

“When we pulled up and saw the long neon sign with the name of the hotel we totally thought we had signed up for a sleazy roach motel! We walked in and to our delight that wasn't so. It is a quaint little hotel with a friendly staff and a warm environment. And we really liked the smell of the shampoo, conditioner and shower gel! All in all, I was impressed with the price and location. I'd totally go back!”

• The hotel lobby was nice, clean and inviting. The staff was great. The bed and pillows were very comfortable.
• The location was a bit far from the things we wanted to see, but nothing we couldn't handle.

“We were please upon arrival and check in. The front desk was prompt, courteous and always smiling. The staff met our needs quickly and answered all questions for us. Our room was clean and adequate for our needs. Some may say it was small, but considering it had a king size bed, it was fine. The room has a large walking closet that can house the ironing board if needed, which was great. The Saha restaurant is located in the hotel served great food with great service. The location is a bit far from the touristy areas, but within reason of walking. Great service, clean rooms and good food, what else can you ask for. One drawback, the walls are very thin and if you have noisy loud neighbors, you will get to enjoy interesting conversation.”

• Free internet.
• Hard to find for someone not used to the area.

“This hotel is ok. it has a wine tasting and free wireless, but that is about it. the room was small and the bathroom was smaller. this hotel is a good roof over your head but that is it.”

• Style, and association with Joie de vivre.
• Elevators slow and old.

“Beautiful hotel, extremely friendly and welcoming staff. The style and atmosphere of the hotel is both modern and clean as well as retro and old-school San Francisco: I enjoyed the accommodations immensely. Can't wait to go back and sample more of the amenities.”

• Asian interior design touches were beautiful.
• Don't go out walk-in' at night unless you're pack in heat.

“These guys really try - beautiful hotel in a questionable neighborhood. Everything was really comfortable. For someone traveling from a city where the police actually keep the beggars moving, I was very saddened at how aggressive beggars have become in the area. Not dangerous per se, but definitely a bummer.”

• Valet very slow and they were cowards.

“The valet hit my car and they denied the situation even after I showed my rental agreement that did not contain the same yellow scratch. But they had a huge yellow pole in the garage. The facility still was not helpful and blames me. Was very upsetting. Neither would nor recommend!”

• The staff was wonderful.
• The parking was a block away and the valet service closed at midnight. Should have valet service 24 hours.

“The hotel exceeded our expectations. The staff, including the housekeeping, was all nice and represented themselves and the hotel to the highest degree. We would definitely stay there again. Thank you Carlton.”

• Not wired for internet. Had to pay.

“For the money this hotel was fine. Since we don't spend much time in our room it met our needs adequately. Had nice romantic ambiance with a convenient location.”
