Quartiere Coppede

- All the buildings circle the Frog Fountain.
- You need to inquire carefully about what bus to take!
“An absolutely fascinating little neighborhood! Coppede was given free rein to design this area, and from the Frog Fountain down to the massive light hanging under a road-spanning bridge, it is the product of his imagination. Art Deco and Art Nouveau touches everywhere. I was allowed into 2 buildings to admire the lobbies - murals, fabulous lighting fixtures. Made me wonder what the apartments themselves might look like. I spent about 3 hours admiring and taking photos (with my not-so-hot camera) of a small area that is off the beaten tourist path (and not too far from some equally interesting Catacombs)! For those who have done the Trevi, the Forum, the Colosseum, the Pantheon and St. Peter's - a semi-undiscovered gem to take home in one's camera or one's mind to trot out for acquaintances who think they have seen everything Rome has to offer. For lovers of architecture.”

Museo delle Cere

- A bit of history.
- Sleeping beauty.
“This museum was created on the 50s and looks like it hasn't been updated since. The wax figures were not nearly as good as Madame Tussuad's and some were downright creepy.”

- Lesser known, not touristy.
- A hike from the train station, but typical of most medieval town centers.
“Off the beaten path and out of range of the torino sprawl, this little town is well worth a stop. There are medieval frescoes in the Cathedral baptistery and few noted works in the cathedral proper. The interior was done up the 1800's but in a restrained elegant style very much in keeping with the Gothic architecture. There's an evocative town gate from the 1500's and numerous renaissance churches as well as good shopping and eating you might expect to find in a town this size. What I didn't find, I didn't miss-hordes of tourists. The views from San Giorgio, on a hill dominating the old center, are worth the climb. And a main street is pedestrians only for the afternoon passeggiata. Very gentile.”

Tram di Opicina

- Cheap. Unique tram. Excellent walks at Obeliska.
- Can be crowded as vehicles are small. Avoid commuter times.
“I work for a travel company, and went out to Italy last year to research an escorted tour. I traveled on the Opicina during a stay in Trieste. It really is a fascinating experience. The tram uniquely transfers to a funicular (ie steep cable way) to gain height. The views from the tram (over Trieste and the bay) are spectacular, and there are easy, but very scenic walks if you get off at the overall summit of Obeliska.”
