Mercado Central
Mar 28, 2007 by Carol from Minneapolis
Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10

  • See how people really live.
  • Market itself is in a concrete bunker.

“Mercado central sits at the center of Guatemala city. Its one drawback is that it is made out of concrete and looks like a parking ramp, which is because a previous version of it was destroyed in an earthquake. There are three levels. The top level has handmade items, mostly for tourists. This is a good place to find textiles, jewelry, leather goods, etc. The second level has food stalls. It is a very good experience to go to this level also and see what people are actually eating and how they buy food. This level also has the bathrooms which cost a quetel to use (pay the attendant outside and they will give you toilet paper). The toilets are not self-flushing - you have to scoop water into them. The third level is the most fascinating. There are areas with just basket makers, or just ceramics makers or just wedding stuff. Wandering through is an amazing experience. Outside of the market are streets clogged with people selling just about anything you could want. Well worth the trip.”

Mapa en Relieve
Aug 23, 2006 by Charles from Washington D.C.
Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10

  • The map itself.
  • FUNTEC the maps administrator gives the visitor very little information about the map and It's author Engineer Francisco Vela.

“A marvelous creation. Only a genius could create such a creation, in such an early epoch. This work is unique in the world, as no other country has a relief map of such dimensions, and that it was created before satellite or even aerial topography. It's author, Engineer Francisco Vela had to travel on foot and on horseback all the national territory, taking measures in order to make the necessary calculations and grasp the country's different features and geography.”
