“Of all the exhibits I visited in Memphis this was the blandest. It should perhaps be titled the Rock and Soul-less Museum. First of all it was hard to find as the address is listed on Beale Street and it is actually a half a block off Beale Street. I should have known to leave when we entered a deserted lobby and a life less gift shop. We took the tour anyway on the chance that maybe it would end up being good; since it is affiliated with the Smithsonian I hoped it would be alright. The best part was at the beginning, you sit in a small theater and watch a short film on the birth of rock and soul in Memphis and how the black and white cultures came together to break down racial and musical barriers. After the film you are left to go on the most lifeless self guided audio tour I have ever been on. The tour takes you through the birth of rock and soul, but by the time you have gotten through the first room focusing on sharecropping and poverty in the south you have forgotten why you are there. The audio track is dull and geared towards the lowest common denominator. You begin to feel as if you are at a lecture rather than on vacation. The best part of the audio tour is being able to listen to your choice of many tracks on jukeboxes throughout the exhibit. We found by stopping and listening to them though we were only drawing out the excruciating experience of being there. We started picking only select audio tracks to listen to, which ended up being a good thing, because even though we entered the museum before their recommended last tour time, they actually began to flash the lights on and off to get us out of the museum, making it obvious that even the people that work there don't want to be there! In short, do not go to this museum, if you want to learn about Rock and Soul, go to Sun Studios and the Souls Ville Stax Museum.”

“February 14, 2008 the worst Valentines Day ever. It was my 5 year anniversary and I thought the riverboat would be a romantic idea, well I thought wrong. One, we get to the boat to find a horrible sitting arrangement, but guess what our name is marked off on it, so we have no seat. It was great standing there for 10 minutes while they tried to find use a table when the reservations had been made for a month. Anyways as the night goes by we wait for our turn to go to the BUFFET, they said they would come get us to go get food, we were on the opposite side of the boat so we got to go last, while others apparently got to eat several times. We did not get any food, well we did but I don't think you consider cold chicken and green beans food. Finally at the end of the ride they tried to compensate us for the food we did not get with a bottle of Andre Extra Dry champagne, a $6 bottle that they say cost $25. In all we were compensated $49 for the most horrible night of my life. Trust me I have been to many places but this was by far the worst do not go!”

“I love billy hard wicks all-star lanes. I live in Southaven, MS. Yet I prefer the lanes there, and the people are the best!”

“Studio on the square is a really nice six-screen movie theater, located just off north cooper, only 3 blocks south of overtone park. Nice, modern facility, first-run films, comfortable seating, and plenty of parking.”

“By the end of this tour, I was nearly overcome with emotion. This museum is a must for anyone visiting Memphis. The museum is actually built onto the Lorraine Motel where MLK was shot. The tour is self guided and is best if you purchase the audio headphones for only $2 more. The exhibits are well presented with as many true historical objects as possible such as the bus Rosa Parks was on and a burned out bus Freedom Fighters rode on. The rooms that MLK was in before his death are very moving. While not able to go out onto the actual balcony where he was shot, you are able to view it. Across the street, the museum is expanding. There are lots of exhibits about the shooter, investigation, and trial. There is a viewing from a window to the balcony of the Lorraine, probably just as the shooter saw it. This museum was the highlight of my trip.”

“Graceland is a dream come true. You could have went to hell and back and when you go throw the gate of Graceland everything changes.”

“Worth the visit if you are in or near Memphis, even if you are only a casual Elvis fan. I would imagine a big Elvis fan should consider it a "must-see." The house is not as big as I expected, and the entire second floor is off limits. The living areas are supposedly decorated just as they were before Elvis died and it's fun to imagine Elvis and other stars sitting around and having fun. There is plenty of memorabilia to look at if you are into that sort of thing. ”
