Norfolk International Airport in southeastern Virginia is the largest airport serving the Greater Hampton Roads area and northeastern North Carolina. The airport is approximately six miles from downtown Norfolk, a city that's home to the world's largest naval base. It is adjacent to the Lake Whitehurst Reservoir and the famous Norfolk Botanical Garden. From the airport, you can fly nonstop to 20 destinations on seven major airlines. US Airways offers the most flights, but no one airline dominants the airport. The airport's sand-colored main terminal was built in the 1970s, but a major capital improvement project completed in June 2002 refurbished the somewhat drab terminal and added a spacious new arrivals terminal, a nine-story parking garage and additional food and retail concessions.
