Kansas City International Airport601 Brasilia Ave, kansa City, MOWeb: Visit this site » Kansas City International Airport, located outside of Kansas City, Mo., had the nation's first "drive-to-your-gate" terminals when it opened in 1972. But, what was innovative then is cumbersome now with today's stricter security standards. The design of the airport's three circular terminals certainly minimizes the distance between the curb and the plane, but it also means that each cluster of two to four gates has its own security checkpoint. Security lines generally move quickly, but all concessions and restrooms are outside of the checkpoints. The airport is served by 15 airlines, including low fare airlines Southwest and Midwest, offering numerous nonstop flights across the U.S. and to Toronto, Canada. Given its mid-continent location, Kansas City is a two or three hour flight from most U.S. destinations - a true gateway to and from America's heartland.
