Des Moines International Airport, located approximately six miles south of downtown Des Moines, is the gateway to the Hawkeye State. The airport is serviced by five major airlines and twelve regional airlines with nonstop service to 13 destinations. United, Northwest and American Eagle offer the most flights. To keep pace with growing passenger numbers, the airport added a new $4.8 million baggage claim area in 1998 and two years later added new parking garages complete with skywalks to the main terminal area. Other airport construction projects should not affect travelers, but getting to the airport you can expect delays on I-235, which is being expanded.
