Dallas Love Field was the primary airport in Dallas, Texas until 1974 when Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened. Love Field is now primarily served by Southwest Airlines, which was founded and headquartered at the airport. Continental Express and Delta Connection also provide jet service from the airport. Southwest offers 128 direct flights daily to destinations throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Mississippi, Alabama and Kansas. The destinations are limited by the Wright and Shelby amendments, which were passed by Congress to protect Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport's traffic. However, Love Field has emerged as an affordable and convenient alternative, located seven miles northwest of Dallas' downtown business district.
