Baton Rouge, Louisiana's state capital, was named by early French explorers for a pole covered with fish and animal blood that marked the boundary between two Native American tribes where the city is now located. Modern visitors to Baton Rouge will experience a more hospitable welcome when they arrive at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, which is located three miles from the city's downtown area. The airport features a three story atrium rotunda with a food court and gift shops in the main terminal and two concourses with a total of 10 gates. The airport is serviced by four airlines - American, Continental, Delta and Northwest - and primarily provides nonstop flights to other destinations in the Southeast.
