Straddling the California-Nevada border in the pine-covered Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of this country's favorite winter playgrounds. The numbers alone are thrilling: more than 400 inches of snowfall each year on average, 14,000 acres of ski terrain, and an 80 percent chance of sunshine on any given day. For hikers, skiers, and nature lovers, this rugged mountain retreat is about as close to heaven as you can be. The border gives this popular resort region a split personality. About half the visitors here arrive intent on low-key sightseeing, hiking, fishing, camping, and boating. The rest head directly for the Nevada side, where bargain dining, big-name entertainment, and the lure of a jackpot draw them into the glittering casinos.
